Taxonomy & naming
Pollimyrus pulverulentus was described by the ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1899, from the Middle Congo River near the town then known as Coquilhatville, today Mbandaka, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongue fishes, one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleosts, named for a bony, tooth-bearing structure at the back of the tongue.
The genus Pollimyrus was not established until 1971, when the ichthyologist Jacques Taverne split a group of smaller-bodied mormyrids away from the broader genus Marcusenius; Boulenger's 1899 description predates that split, and this account does not speculate about which genus he used at the time. Pollimyrus now holds roughly eighteen species, and a recent morphometric review of the genus noted that Pollimyrus pulverulentus shows some overlap with the congener Pollimyrus nigripinnis — a reminder that identification within this genus often rests on more than external measurements alone.
Morphology
Pollimyrus pulverulentus is a small mormyrid, reaching about 5 in (5 in) in total length according to a recent morphometric synthesis of the genus — a modest size even by the standards of Pollimyrus, whose species are uniformly small. Finer external detail such as body depth, head shape, or fin position has not been described for this species specifically in the sources reviewed for this account, beyond what is typical of the genus generally.
As in every mormyrid, an electric organ near the base of the tail produces a weak, pulse-type discharge that the fish reads through electroreceptors spread across its skin — a sense that substitutes for vision in the dark, sediment-laden water mormyrids typically favor. Mormyrids also carry one of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any vertebrate group, with an enlarged cerebellum devoted to processing this electrosensory stream. No electric organ discharge waveform specific to Pollimyrus pulverulentus has been published.
Habitat
Pollimyrus pulverulentus is known from the Congo basin, with its type locality on the Middle Congo River near Mbandaka in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Beyond that type locality, the sources reviewed for this account do not document a wider distribution, and the species should be treated as narrowly documented within the Congo system rather than confirmed as basin-wide.
No specific habitat description — water depth, substrate, vegetation, or temperature and pH range — has been published for this species. The Congo basin holds a wide range of river, floodplain and blackwater habitats used by mormyrids generally, but assigning any of that detail to Pollimyrus pulverulentus specifically would go beyond what has been documented.
Feeding
Pollimyrus pulverulentus is presumed to be a bottom-foraging invertebrate feeder, in keeping with the rest of the family Mormyridae. Mormyrids typically use their electric sense to locate insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans hidden in mud, silt and leaf litter, then take them with a quick strike of the mouth. No diet study specific to this species has been published, so this description reflects family-level knowledge rather than direct observation of Pollimyrus pulverulentus.
Mating
Courtship and mating behaviour have not been described for Pollimyrus pulverulentus. In mormyrids generally, the electric organ discharge carries more than navigational information — its pulse pattern is often species- and sex-specific, and it is thought to figure in mate recognition and shoal cohesion. The acoustic courtship signals documented in the well-studied congener Pollimyrus isidori, where males produce grunts and moans during spawning, have not been shown to occur in Pollimyrus pulverulentus and are not assumed here.
Breeding
Breeding has not been recorded for Pollimyrus pulverulentus, in the wild or in captivity. Like most of its genus, the species is known almost entirely from museum specimens rather than from field studies or aquarium accounts, and no spawning behaviour, egg description, or account of parental care has been published. General aquarium guidance for the family places temperatures around 77–84 °F and pH 6 to 8, with live or frozen invertebrate foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp offered after the lights dim, since mormyrids typically refuse dry food and forage more readily at night. None of this has been verified specifically for Pollimyrus pulverulentus, but it reflects standard practice across the family it belongs to.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Pollimyrus pulverulentus as Least Concern, based on a 2022 assessment. The species is known from the Congo basin, and its population trend is assumed stable in the absence of evidence of decline.
No species-specific threat has been documented for Pollimyrus pulverulentus. As with other Congo basin fish, general pressures such as habitat degradation, siltation, and water-quality decline in parts of the basin are the kind of long-term risk that could affect the species, but the current Least Concern status should not be read as an urgent conservation flag.
