Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrus hasselquist was described by the French naturalist Bernard Germain de Lacépède in 1803. It belongs to Mormyridae, the family of weakly electric African elephantnose fishes, within Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — a scattered, deep-time radiation of teleosts found today on four continents. Mormyrus is one of the larger genera in the family, holding several dozen species spread across Africa's major river systems, most separated mainly by snout shape, fin proportions and electric organ discharge pattern rather than obvious external color.
The genus name Mormyrus derives from an old Greek word, mormyros, used by classical writers for a Mediterranean sea fish unrelated to the African elephantnoses; early naturalists reused the name for this freshwater African group. The species epithet honors Frederik Hasselquist (1722-1752), a Swedish naturalist and student of Carl Linnaeus who traveled through the eastern Mediterranean and Levant collecting specimens before dying young in Smyrna; his notes, published posthumously as Iter Palaestinum, informed the work of Linnaeus and later authors, Lacépède among them, when naming newly described species. Because many Mormyrus look alike, confident field identification of this species often depends on its electric organ discharge rather than appearance alone.
Morphology
Mormyrus hasselquist has the elongated, laterally compressed body typical of its genus: a slender caudal peduncle, a deeply forked tail, and a single long dorsal fin set opposite a long anal fin toward the rear of the body. The head tapers into a downward-curving, tube-like snout used for probing sediment — a different arrangement from the fleshy chin barbel, the schnauzenorgan, seen in the related genus Gnathonemus. The skin is naked and scaleless on the head, and the eyes are small, consistent with a fish that relies more on electrolocation than vision.
FishBase records a maximum size near 19.7 in, making this one of the larger Mormyrus species available to aquarists and well beyond small elephantnoses such as Gnathonemus petersii, which tops out around 4.7–5.5 in. Near the base of the tail sits the electric organ, derived from modified muscle tissue, firing a weak, species-specific pulse many times a second. Mormyrids carry one of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish group, with an enlarged cerebellum devoted to processing the constant stream of electrical information from that discharge — a sensory specialization for reading a dark, low-visibility environment, not evidence of general intelligence in the human sense.
Habitat
According to FishBase, Mormyrus hasselquist has an unusually broad range for the genus, spanning the Nile and Lake Chad basins along with a series of West African coastal drainages — the Senegal, Gambia, Volta, Mono, Gêba, Bandama, Comoé and Ebrié systems among them. Most Mormyrus species are confined to a single river or lake basin, so this wide distribution across both Central-Nilotic and West African watersheds sets it apart from many close relatives.
Across that range it is a freshwater, bottom-oriented fish of rivers and floodplains, typically in turbid, soft-bottomed water where visibility is poor — the kind of dim, sediment-laden environment the mormyrid electric sense evolved to read. General mormyrid husbandry guidance calls for soft to moderately hard water (roughly 5-12 dGH), a pH near 6.0-7.5 and warm temperatures around 75–82 °F; this reflects broad guidance for the genus rather than measurements published for any one basin within this species' wide range.
Feeding
Mormyrus hasselquist is a benthic invertebrate feeder, taking insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans from soft sediment, with electrolocation helping it detect prey buried out of sight. Like other mormyrids it forages mainly after dark, when it is most active.
In the aquarium it is fed live or frozen foods — mosquito larvae, bloodworm, Tubifex, Daphnia and copepods are all reported as accepted foods — and it generally ignores dry flake or pellet food. Feeding after lights-out, or at least in dim light, better matches its natural rhythm and reduces competition from more sight-oriented tankmates.
Mating
Courtship and spawning in Mormyrus hasselquist specifically has not been documented in the sources reviewed for this account. Across mormyrids as a group, breeding is tied to seasonal flooding, and the electric organ discharge is thought to play a role in courtship and species recognition, letting a fish identify a potential mate of the correct species in water where sight is of little use.
Beyond that general pattern, details for this species — timing, courtship display, spawning sites — are not established. Mormyrids remain among the least-understood breeders of any group regularly kept by aquarists.
Breeding
Mormyrus hasselquist is essentially unbred in captivity. Mormyrids as a family are rarely if ever spawned successfully in home aquaria, and even public aquariums and research institutions report few reliable accounts. Its wild breeding biology is correspondingly poorly known.
In the wild, some mormyrids are thought to scatter eggs among plants or in sheltered margins during flood season, with little or no parental care documented afterward, but this has not been confirmed specifically for M. hasselquist. Parental care across the genus is poorly studied, and no captive-breeding protocol exists for this species.
In the aquarium
Mormyrus hasselquist is a fish for experienced keepers with room for a large tank. FishBase places its maximum size near 19.7 in, a genuine size trap next to the small elephantnoses more commonly sold, and aquarium guidance for the species calls for at least 59.1 in of tank length as an adult. Care sheets for this species also recommend keeping it in a group of three or more rather than alone, which runs against the solitary-fish advice given for some other mormyrids and is worth following specifically for this one.
Provide dim lighting, a soft sand substrate that will not abrade the sensitive, probing snout, and plenty of cover such as driftwood, roots and broad-leaved plants. Mormyrids in general are sensitive to poor water quality, to rapid water changes, and to disinfectants and heavy metals present in some tap water, so stable, mature water and conservative dosing of any medication are important. A tight-fitting lid is standard practice for most mormyrids, which can be surprisingly capable at pushing through gaps.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrus hasselquist as Least Concern, an assessment reported as made on 24 October 2019. The species' unusually wide distribution across the Nile, Lake Chad and multiple West African river systems supports that status: a decline in any single basin is unlikely to threaten the species as a whole.
No species-specific population trend or major threat is documented in the sources reviewed for this account. As with many wide-ranging West African river fish, the general long-term pressures on its habitat are damming, water abstraction and pollution across the many drainages it occupies, though none is flagged as an acute concern for this particular species at present.
