Pollimyrus pedunculatus is a small mormyrid described by the ichthyologists Léon David and Max Poll in 1937, in the same body of work that produced several other Mormyridae species from the Belgian Congo. Like every fish in its family it carries a weak electric organ near the base of the tail and reads its surroundings through the resulting electric field rather than through sight alone. The parenthetical form of the authority citation shows that the original 1937 description placed the species in a different genus before it was later reassigned to Pollimyrus. Beyond the original description, almost nothing about its size, precise range, ecology, or reproduction appears to have been published, and this article states only what can be confirmed rather than filling the gaps with assumption.

Pollimyrus pedunculatus was described by the ichthyologists Léon David and Max Poll in 1937. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongue fishes, one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleosts. David and Poll published extensively on the fish fauna of the Belgian Congo during this period, and several other Mormyridae species bearing their names — among them Petrocephalus congicus and Campylomormyrus luapulaensis — were described in the same body of work.

The parenthetical form of the authority citation indicates that the original 1937 description did not place the species in the genus Pollimyrus, which was not established until 1971, when the ichthyologist Jacques Taverne split a group of smaller-bodied mormyrids away from the broader genus Marcusenius. David and Poll's original generic placement for this species, its precise type locality, and any subsequent synonymy are not confirmed in the sources reviewed for this account, and this article does not speculate about them beyond noting the pattern shared with several of its congeners.

Morphology
