Tachysurus qiongzhouensis is a striped bagrid catfish described in 2026 from the Nandu and Changhua River drainages of Hainan Island, China, with an additional population in the Moyang River of coastal Guangdong Province across the Qiongzhou Strait. Reaching up to about 9.8 cm SL in the type series, it is a lowland mainstem specialist, genetically distinct but almost morphologically indistinguishable from its closest relative, Tachysurus sinovietnamensis, until researchers applied multivariate analysis to separate the two. It was carved out of the once wide-ranging “Tachysurus virgatus” after genetic and morphological work showed that name covered a complex of at least ten species.

Taxonomy & naming

Tachysurus qiongzhouensis was described in 2026 by Weihan Shao, Xingwei Cai and E Zhang in a large integrative-taxonomy revision of “Tachysurus virgatus” (Oshima, 1926) sensu lato published in the journal Animals (MDPI). Combining mitochondrial sequencing with detailed morphometrics across the species' full range from Vietnam to Fujian Province, the authors resolved what had been treated as one widespread striped catfish into ten distinct lineages, nine of which — including this species — were newly described in the same paper.

T. qiongzhouensis sits in “Clade II” of the revised T. virgatus group, in a coloration-based “morph-group A” together with T. analimaculatus and its closest relative, T. sinovietnamensis. The three share a mid-lateral stripe that is constricted at two points — behind the dorsal fin and at the adipose fin — and tapers toward the tail, unlike the uniformly wide stripe of the T. virgatus/T. trimaculatus lineage. Genetically, T. qiongzhouensis and T. sinovietnamensis show 1.9% mitochondrial cyt-b divergence — substantial by the paper's speciation thresholds — despite being 'morphologically cryptic, distinguishable only through multivariate morphometric analysis,' in the authors' words; the two do not even form a monophyletic pair, with T. qiongzhouensis instead grouping with T. analimaculatus and both sister to T. kyphus.

The holotype (catalog number HAIK37477, 3.48 in SL) was collected by Xingwei Cai in November 2019 from the Nandu River at Xinpo Town, Haikou City, Hainan Province. Paratypes include ten specimens (2.23–3.87 in SL) from the same Hainan collections and five more (2.39–2.74 in SL) from the Moyang River in Yangchun City, Guangdong Province — a coastal river across the Qiongzhou Strait from Hainan that the describing authors treat as part of the same species' range. Catalog of Fishes lists Tachysurus qiongzhouensis Shao, Cai & Zhang, 2026 as the currently valid combination, with distribution given as the Nandu and Changhua River drainages of Hainan Island and the Moyang River drainage of Guangdong Province.

Morphology

T. qiongzhouensis carries the two continuous black longitudinal stripes typical of the T. virgatus group, but with a mid-lateral stripe that is constricted rather than uniformly wide — pinched at the rear of the dorsal fin and again at the adipose fin, broader near the pelvic-fin insertion than at the caudal peduncle. It has a deeply forked caudal fin and a prominent notch on the dorso-lateral stripe just behind the dorsal fin, characters shared with T. analimaculatus and T. sinovietnamensis but not with the group's other species. It differs from T. analimaculatus in having a deeper body (19.1–24.5% of head length at the anus, versus 13.8–19.2%), and from its closest relative T. sinovietnamensis — which it otherwise closely resembles — only in fine barbel-length ratios detectable by multivariate analysis rather than by eye.

Meristic counts from the type series: 7 dorsal-fin rays, 15–17 anal-fin rays, 7 pectoral-fin rays, 6 pelvic-fin rays and 31–32 total vertebrae. As in other bagrids, the skin is scaleless and the dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a serrated, lockable spine — a genus-level feature rather than something checked specifically for this species.

Measured specimens in the type series range from 2.23–3.87 in standard length, with the largest a paratype from the Nandu River. This is the size range documented so far, not a confirmed adult maximum for the species.

Habitat

Tachysurus qiongzhouensis is known from the Nandu and Changhua River drainages on Hainan Island and from the Moyang River drainage of coastal Guangdong Province, China. It is classed in the 2026 revision as an “obligate mainstem specialist”, one of only three species in the T. virgatus group (with T. sinovietnamensis and T. analimaculatus) confined exclusively to the main channels of lowland rivers rather than tributary streams. These mainstem habitats are described in the source paper as having slower currents, finer sand or silt substrate and lower dissolved-oxygen concentrations than the gravel-bedded streams used by the group's stream-specialist species.

In the Moyang River the authors note that T. qiongzhouensis occupies the lowland mainstem while a related species, T. heterofasciatus, occupies the same river's montane stream reaches — an example of habitat partitioning the paper suggests reduces competition between the two. No water-chemistry measurements (temperature, pH, hardness) have been published for any collection site.

Feeding

As a genus-level generality, Tachysurus species are nocturnal benthic predators using their barbels to locate invertebrate prey; the related, better-studied T. fulvidraco feeds heavily on caddisfly and midge larvae. Whether T. qiongzhouensis follows this pattern in its mainstem river habitat has not been confirmed.

Related Tachysurus species pair for spawning in spring and summer, a genus-level pattern that has not been confirmed for this species.

In the aquarium

Tachysurus qiongzhouensis is not established in the aquarium trade; as a species described in 2026, no husbandry accounts exist. Extrapolating cautiously from its documented mainstem-river habitat and genus-level Tachysurus/Bagridae biology: a larger, sand- or silt-bottomed setup with moderate rather than fast flow would likely suit it better than the fast-flow stream setups used for some of its stream-dwelling relatives. As with all bagrids, the dorsal and pectoral spines lock and can snag in netting, so a container is the safer way to move the fish. No import history or trade presence has been reported.

Conservation

Tachysurus qiongzhouensis has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species named in 2026 it currently carries no status. The describing authors evaluated the T. virgatus group against IUCN criteria and note that species confined exclusively or facultatively to river mainstems — a group that includes T. qiongzhouensis — show comparatively low Extent of Occurrence (roughly 5,000–30,0 mi²) but no documented population declines or threats, and recommend these species be classed Least Concern.

This is a more favorable outlook than for some of the group's narrow-range stream specialists, but it reflects the absence of documented threats rather than active monitoring; the species' true status will depend on formal IUCN assessment. No conservation program specific to this species has been reported.
