Taxonomy & naming
Tachysurus sinovietnamensis was described in 2026 by Weihan Shao, Tao Dinh Nguyen and E Zhang in a large integrative-taxonomy revision of “Tachysurus virgatus” (Oshima, 1926) sensu lato, published in the journal Animals (MDPI). The study combined mitochondrial sequencing with morphometric analysis across the nominal species' full range from central Vietnam to Fujian Province and found that specimens long lumped as T. virgatus actually represent ten distinct lineages; nine were newly described, including this species.
T. sinovietnamensis falls in “Clade II” of the revised T. virgatus group, in coloration-based “morph-group A” alongside T. qiongzhouensis and T. analimaculatus — all three sharing a mid-lateral stripe constricted at the dorsal-fin and adipose-fin level rather than uniformly wide. Despite its overall similarity in appearance to T. qiongzhouensis (the two are distinguished, per the original description, mainly by barbel-length ratios recovered through multivariate analysis rather than by eye), the paper's phylogeny does not place them as sisters: T. sinovietnamensis instead groups with T. spilotus, from which it differs by only 0.9% in the mitochondrial cyt-b gene despite marked differences in caudal-fin shape, coloration and habitat — T. sinovietnamensis in lowland mainstems, T. spilotus in montane streams. The authors cite this pair as a case where morphological and ecological divergence outpaced genetic divergence, estimating that even this shallow 0.9% split represents over a million years of separation given the slow mitochondrial substitution rates documented in East Asian bagrids.
The holotype (catalog number YUANY13, 2.83 in SL) was collected by Hongfu Yang in November 2024 from the Red River at Yuanyang County, Yunnan Province, China. Paratypes include four specimens (1.97–2.75 in SL) from the same Chinese collection and four more (2.08–2.57 in SL) from the Cầu River, a Red River tributary at Bắc Ninh City, Vietnam. Catalog of Fishes lists Tachysurus sinovietnamensis Shao, Nguyen & Zhang, 2026 as the currently valid combination, with distribution given as the Red River basin of southwest China and northern Vietnam plus coastal rivers of north-central Vietnam, including the Gianh and Lam Rivers.
Morphology
T. sinovietnamensis carries the two continuous black longitudinal stripes typical of the T. virgatus group with a deeply forked caudal fin and a prominent notch on the dorso-lateral stripe behind the dorsal fin. Like its morph-group A relatives, its mid-lateral stripe is constricted — tapering and irregular rather than uniformly wide — distinguishing it from the T. virgatus/T. trimaculatus lineage. It differs from T. analimaculatus in having a deeper body (19.1–24.5% of head length at the anus, versus 13.8–19.2%), and from its close look-alike T. qiongzhouensis by subtle ratios of standard length and head length to maxillary and nasal barbel length — differences recoverable only through multivariate morphometric analysis, not by external inspection.
Meristic counts from the type series: 7 dorsal-fin rays, 12–16 anal-fin rays, 7–8 pectoral-fin rays, 6 pelvic-fin rays and 31–34 total vertebrae — the broadest vertebral range recorded for any species in the group alongside T. spilotus. As in other bagrids the skin is scaleless, and the dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a serrated, lockable spine — a genus-level feature rather than a finding specific to this species.
Measured specimens in the type series range from 1.97–2.83 in standard length, with the 2.83 in holotype the largest. This reflects the known type series rather than a confirmed adult maximum for the species.
Habitat
Tachysurus sinovietnamensis is known from the Red River basin of Yunnan Province, China, and northern Vietnam, and from coastal rivers of north-central Vietnam including the Gianh River (Quang Binh Province) and Lam River (Ha Tinh Province). It is classed as an “obligate mainstem specialist” in the original description, one of three species in the T. virgatus group confined exclusively to lowland river mainstems rather than tributary streams, in habitat with slower currents, finer sand or silt substrate and lower dissolved oxygen than the gravel-bedded streams used by the group's stream specialists.
In the Red River basin the authors note a parallel to the Moyang River pattern seen with T. qiongzhouensis: the related, unstriped T. kyphus is mainly distributed in upland Red River streams while T. sinovietnamensis occupies the mainstem — suggested habitat partitioning between the two. No water-chemistry measurements (temperature, pH, hardness) have been published for any collection site.
Feeding
No feeding, spawning or captive-husbandry data has been published for this species; it is known only from the type series collected for the 2026 taxonomic revision. As a genus-level generality, Tachysurus species are nocturnal benthic predators using their barbels to find invertebrate prey; the related, better-studied T. fulvidraco feeds heavily on caddisfly and midge larvae. Whether T. sinovietnamensis follows this pattern in its mainstem-river habitat has not been confirmed.

No sex-linked size or color difference was reported for the type series. Related Tachysurus species pair for spawning in spring and summer, a genus-level pattern that has not been confirmed for this species.

Bagrids in this genus, where studied, are cavity or sheltered-substrate spawners with male egg-guarding — documented for the farmed congener T. fulvidraco — but this is genus-level context, not a specific finding for T. sinovietnamensis, which has never been recorded in captivity.
In the aquarium
Tachysurus sinovietnamensis is not established in the aquarium trade; as a species described in 2026 spanning two countries, no husbandry accounts exist. Extrapolating cautiously from its documented lowland-mainstem habitat and genus-level Tachysurus/Bagridae biology: a larger, sand- or silt-bottomed setup with moderate flow would likely suit it better than fast-current stream setups. As with all bagrids, the dorsal and pectoral spines lock and can snag in netting, so a container is the safer way to move the fish. No import history or trade presence has been reported.
Conservation
Tachysurus sinovietnamensis has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species named in 2026 it currently carries no status. The describing authors evaluated the T. virgatus group against IUCN criteria and note that species confined exclusively or facultatively to river mainstems — a group that includes T. sinovietnamensis — show comparatively low Extent of Occurrence (roughly 5,000–30,0 mi²) but no documented population declines or threats, and recommend these species be classed Least Concern.
As a species with populations spanning an international border, effective monitoring would require coordination between Chinese and Vietnamese researchers; the paper notes that transnational sampling difficulty is part of why cryptic diversity in this region went undocumented for so long. No conservation program specific to this species has been reported.
