Tachysurus trimaculatus is a striped bagrid catfish described in 2026 from the Beixi River, a tributary of the Jiulongjiang River basin in Fujian Province, southeast China. Its name refers to a distinctive detail of its coloration: the pale nuchal stripe that runs continuously across the neck in most of its relatives is broken into three separate blotches in this species. Reaching up to about 7.1 cm SL in the type series, it is the earliest-diverging lineage within its clade of the newly defined Tachysurus virgatus species group, and — known from a single restricted river system near the rapidly developing Fujian coast — the describing authors recommend it for Vulnerable status under IUCN criteria.

Taxonomy & naming

Tachysurus trimaculatus was described in 2026 by Weihan Shao and E Zhang in a large integrative-taxonomy revision of “Tachysurus virgatus” (Oshima, 1926) sensu lato, published in the journal Animals (MDPI). The study combined mitochondrial sequencing with morphometric analysis across the nominal species' full range and found that what had been treated as one widespread striped catfish was actually ten distinct lineages; nine were newly described, including this species.

Within the revised T. virgatus group, T. trimaculatus is placed in “Clade I” and, phylogenetically, is described as “the earliest-diverging lineage” in that clade, sister to all six remaining Clade I species. It sits in coloration-based “morph-group B” with T. virgatus, T. bailongensis, T. furcatus and T. pseudovirgatus, all sharing an unconstricted, uniformly wide mid-lateral stripe, though the paper notes T. trimaculatus is the most morphologically distinct member of that group — separable from the other four on principal-component analysis by its notably more slender body and shorter maxillary barbel. Genetically it is the most divergent member of Clade I, differing from its nearest Clade I relatives by 7.7–9.2% in the mitochondrial cyt-b gene, several times the divergence separating other species pairs in the group.

The holotype (catalog number PINGHE65311, 2.74 in SL) was collected by Weihan Shao in June 2019 from the Jiulong River at Pinghe Town, Fujian Province, a coastal river draining into the Taiwan Strait. Fourteen paratypes (1.82–2.81 in SL) were collected at the same site and a nearby locality. Catalog of Fishes lists Tachysurus trimaculatus Shao & Zhang, 2026 as the currently valid combination, with distribution given as the Beixi River drainage of the Jiulongjiang River basin, Fujian Province, southeast China.

Morphology

T. trimaculatus carries the deeply forked caudal fin and semicircular black markings at the caudal-fin base shared across the T. virgatus group. Its diagnostic feature, and the source of its name, is coloration: in dorsal view the pale, whitish-yellow nuchal stripe that runs continuously across the neck in related species is instead interrupted into three separate blotches. It is further distinguished from every other striped congener by the combination of a connection between the dorso-lateral stripe and the black opercular blotches together with the absence of a connection between the dorso-lateral and mid-lateral stripes ahead of the dorsal fin.

Morphometrically, T. trimaculatus stands apart from its closest relatives (T. virgatus, T. bailongensis, T. furcatus and T. pseudovirgatus) by a distinctly more slender body (14.0–18.4% of standard length at depth, versus 18.1–21.5% in the other four) and a shorter maxillary barbel (16.8–20.8% of standard length, versus 19.0–24.6%). The authors suggest the slender body may be a compensatory adaptation that lets the species retain a deeply forked, narrow-lobed caudal fin — a shape more typical of mainstem-dwelling fish — despite living in the higher-flow stream habitat that usually favors a broader caudal fin in this group.

Meristic counts from the type series: 6–7 dorsal-fin rays, 13–14 anal-fin rays, 7 pectoral-fin rays, 6 pelvic-fin rays and 30–31 total vertebrae. As in other bagrids the skin is scaleless, and the dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a serrated, lockable spine — a genus-level feature rather than a finding specific to this species. Measured specimens range from 1.82–2.81 in standard length, the largest a paratype; this is the size range documented so far, not a confirmed adult maximum.

Habitat

Tachysurus trimaculatus is currently known only from the Beixi River, a tributary of the Jiulongjiang (Jiulong) River basin in Fujian Province, southeast China, a coastal river system draining into the Taiwan Strait. All recorded specimens came from flowing stream habitat, placing the species among the seven “obligate stream-dwelling” members of the T. virgatus group — fish restricted to montane or upland stream reaches with higher flow velocity, coarse gravel or boulder substrate and well-oxygenated water, in contrast to the slower, siltier mainstem habitats used by some of its relatives.

No occurrence beyond this single river system has been reported, and no water-chemistry measurements (temperature, pH, hardness) have been published for the type locality.

Feeding

No feeding, spawning or captive-husbandry data has been published for this species; it is known only from the type series collected for the 2026 taxonomic revision. As a genus-level generality, Tachysurus species are nocturnal benthic predators using their barbels to find invertebrate prey; the related, better-studied T. fulvidraco feeds heavily on caddisfly and midge larvae. Whether T. trimaculatus follows this pattern has not been confirmed.

Mating

No sex-linked size or color difference was reported for the type series. Related Tachysurus species pair for spawning in spring and summer, a genus-level pattern that has not been confirmed for this species.

Bagrids in this genus, where studied, are cavity or sheltered-substrate spawners with male egg-guarding — documented for the farmed congener T. fulvidraco — but this is genus-level context, not a specific finding for T. trimaculatus, which has never been recorded in captivity.

In the aquarium

Tachysurus trimaculatus is not established in the aquarium trade and, as a species described in 2026 from a single small river system, is unlikely to become available through normal commercial channels; no husbandry accounts exist. If specimens were ever encountered, the safest approach is to extrapolate cautiously from genus-level Tachysurus/Bagridae care: cool to moderate, well-oxygenated, flowing water reflecting its stream habitat; soft or fine gravel substrate for the barbels; shelter for a fish presumably nocturnal and benthic like its relatives; and the standard bagrid handling caution — the dorsal and pectoral spines lock and can snag in a net, so a container is safer for transfers. Given the species' single-locality range and recommended Vulnerable status, any live specimens encountered in trade would raise conservation concerns and should not be collected from the wild.

Conservation

Tachysurus trimaculatus has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species named in 2026 it currently carries no status. The authors of the describing paper evaluated it against IUCN criteria as part of their revision and recommend Vulnerable status under Criterion D2. Their reasoning: the species maintains a substantial population where it occurs but is confined to a single known locality, and although no continuous population decline or extreme fluctuation has been documented, that single-locality restriction alone is enough to meet the criterion.

This places T. trimaculatus alongside T. heterofasciatus as the group's two recommended Vulnerable species — a step below the Endangered recommendation given to T. pseudovirgatus and T. platystomus, whose single localities have documented urbanization-driven declines. No conservation program specific to this species has been reported.
