Taxonomy & naming
The yellow cory was described by Rodolpho von Ihering in 1911 (in the Revista do Museu Paulista), from tributaries of the Rio Piracicaba above Salto, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil — part of the upper Paraná system. The epithet flaveolus is a Latin diminutive meaning 'yellowish,' for the species' pale, yellow-tinged colour.
It was long carried as Corydoras flaveolus, within the huge genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803 (family Callichthyidae). Molecular work showed Corydoras to be an unnatural assemblage, and the 2024 revision by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues split it into several genera, including Brochis, Hoplisoma, Osteogaster and Gastrodermus. Under that classification the yellow cory becomes Hoplisoma flaveolum. The change is recent and not yet universally adopted, and the aquarium world still says 'Corydoras flaveolus,' so we keep that as the heading while noting the current combination in Hoplisoma.
Morphology
This is one of the smaller corys, reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length, with females growing larger and rounder than males. It has the standard armoured build of the subfamily: two overlapping rows of bony scutes along each flank, a hard helmeted head, three pairs of short barbels around the downturned mouth for sifting the substrate, and stiff, mildly venomous leading spines in the dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins.
True to its name the ground colour is a pale, yellowish to buff tone, generally plainer and less boldly marked than the strongly spotted Amazonian corys, with subtle darker shading. It is a neat, unobtrusive little fish rather than a flashy one — its appeal lies in its modest size and its origin in the cooler streams of southeastern Brazil.
Habitat
Corydoras flaveolus is native to the upper Paraná River basin in São Paulo state, the type series coming from tributaries of the Rio Piracicaba above Salto. These are the streams and small rivers of the subtropical Paraná highlands, and an important practical point follows from that geography: the water here is distinctly cooler than the Amazon, with reported temperatures of only about 68–73 °F.
The habitat is the usual cory setting of shallow, flowing to slow-moving water over sand and gravel with leaf litter and submerged wood. Detailed published water-chemistry from the type localities is limited, but the regional waters are generally soft to moderately hard and near-neutral. As with other corys it is a bottom-dwelling, quiet-water fish and a facultative air-breather, able to surface and gulp air in oxygen-poor conditions.
Feeding
The yellow cory is a benthic omnivore and detritivore, foraging continuously over the bottom and sifting sand through its barbels and gills to extract small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, micro-crustaceans and organic detritus. It is an opportunistic feeder rather than a specialist. In the aquarium it accepts all prepared foods that sink to the bottom — tablets, granules and larger flakes — and takes live or frozen bloodworm, white worm, grindal worm, Daphnia and Tubifex, the latter being especially useful for conditioning a group before spawning.
Mating
No spawning account specific to C. flaveolus has been published, but the species is expected to follow the standard, well-documented Corydoras courtship — an egg-laying shoaler with no pair bond. A ready female cleans a spawning site and the group becomes active; a male takes up the characteristic 'T-position' at right angles to her head, and she appears to take his milt into her mouth. Sperm is thought to pass quickly through her gut to fertilise the few eggs held in a basket of her clasped pelvic fins, which she then presses onto the cleaned surface. The sequence repeats a few eggs at a time until the clutch is laid.
Breeding
There is no published breeding report for the yellow cory, and it is uncommon in the hobby, but it would be expected to breed like its relatives — with one important twist. Because it comes from cooler subtropical streams, a meaningful seasonal temperature drop is probably an even more important spawning cue for this species than for tropical corys, and it should not be kept permanently warm. As in other corys the adhesive eggs receive no parental care and are eaten by the adults, so breeders remove either the eggs or the parents; by analogy with congeners, eggs would hatch in roughly three to five days and the fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods after the yolk sac is absorbed.
In the aquarium
C. flaveolus is an infrequently traded cory whose single most important husbandry point is temperature: as a subtropical species from southeastern Brazil it wants distinctly cooler water than most corys, around 68–73 °F, and it should not be kept in a warm tropical community. Beyond that, its care follows the genus template.
It is a shoaling fish that must be kept in groups of six or more — singletons and pairs are stressed — in a tank with a generous open bottom area; around 23.5 in is a reasonable minimum. The substrate should be soft sand or smooth, rounded fine gravel, never sharp or chipped grit, which damages the barbels these fish feed with. Keep the bottom clean and the water well filtered, well oxygenated and regularly changed, soft to moderately hard and near-neutral. It is wholly peaceful and best matched with other cool-water-tolerant, gentle community fish rather than heat-loving tropicals. The standard cautions apply: the fin spines snag in nets (a cup is safer), and a distressed cory can release a skin toxin that may be fatal in the confined volume of a transport bag.
Conservation
Corydoras flaveolus has not been assessed by the IUCN and carries no Red List status. That gap is significant for this species, because the upper Paraná basin around São Paulo and Piracicaba is one of the most heavily urbanised, industrialised and agriculturally developed regions of Brazil, and its streams have suffered extensive pollution, channelisation, damming and habitat loss. A small fish with a restricted distribution in exactly this kind of intensively modified landscape is the sort of species whose status genuinely warrants checking, yet for now no formal evaluation exists and its true conservation standing remains unknown.
