Aequidens

Aequidens is a genus of mid-sized South American cichlids — the 'true acaras' — that for most of the twentieth century served as taxonomy's overflow drawer for the Neotropics. Erected by Eigenmann and Bray in 1894 and named for the even, equal-sized teeth of its type species, the genus once held dozens of loosely-related 'acaras' until Sven Kullander's revisions of the 1980s and 1990s emptied most of them into newly-minted genera. What remains is a tighter, but still unsettled, core of roughly sixteen to twenty species built around the widespread saddle cichlid, Aequidens tetramerus. The genus name is therefore as much a piece of ichthyological history as a biological label: to a hobbyist, an 'acara' is a hardy, patterned, lake-and-stream cichlid, but to a taxonomist, Aequidens is a cautionary tale about what happens when a genus is asked to hold more than it can diagnose.

Taxonomy & the wastebasket history

Aequidens was established by Carl H. Eigenmann and William L. Bray in 1894 in 'A revision of the American Cichlidae' (Annals of the New York Academy of Science 7(1):607–624), with Acara tetramerus Heckel, 1840 fixed as the type species by original designation — a designation confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and by FishBase. The name itself is descriptive: from Latin aequus ('equal') and dens ('tooth'), in reference to the identically-sized oral teeth of A. tetramerus. As Seriously Fish notes, the genus was originally proposed in contrast to Astronotus, which carries enlarged anterior teeth; the 'equal teeth' were the diagnostic hook.

For decades, however, Aequidens functioned as a wastebasket (or 'catch-all') taxon — a label the USGS, Seriously Fish and the primary literature all use without euphemism. Almost any medium-sized, vaguely acara-shaped South or Central American cichlid that did not obviously belong elsewhere was filed under Aequidens, exactly as 'Cichlasoma' was used as a parallel dumping ground for the larger forms. The dismantling is largely the work of Sven O. Kullander. In his 1983 revision of Cichlasoma and his 1986 monograph on the cichlids of the Peruvian Amazon, Kullander treated Aequidens as an unnatural assemblage and began carving genuine lineages out of it. Over the following years the blue/green acaras of trans-Andean and northern South America — including the former A. pulcher, A. coeruleopunctatus, A. latifrons and A. rivulatus — were moved to Andinoacara; the delayed mouthbrooders went to Bujurquina (Kullander, 1986); the dwarf 'smiling' acaras to Laetacara; the keyhole cichlid to Cleithracara; and other forms to Krobia (Kullander & Nijssen, 1989). Later molecular work continued the splitting: Musilová, Říčan and Novák (2009, J. Zool. Syst. Evol. Res. 47(3):234–247) revised the tribe Cichlasomatini and erected the genus Ivanacara, among other rearrangements. What survives as Aequidens sensu stricto is the assemblage clustered around the type — chiefly the A. tetramerus group and the A. diadema group.

An unsettled core

Even after that century of pruning, Aequidens is not a fully settled genus, and an honest overview has to say so. The Cichlid Room Companion currently lists sixteen valid named species under Aequidens (against seven historical synonyms), while GBIF's backbone counts around seventeen accepted species — a span consistent with the figure of roughly sixteen to twenty-three sometimes quoted in the older literature, the higher end reflecting names not yet reassigned. New species are still being described, such as Aequidens pirilampo (Oliveira et al., 2024) and an as-yet-named form from the upper rio Correntes in the Paraguai basin (Brazil, 2023), so the count is a moving target rather than a fixed number.

The deeper problem is phylogenetic. Recent analyses disagree on where the boundaries of Aequidens should fall. Musilová et al. (2009) recovered the A. tetramerus group as sister to Cichlasoma, with the A. diadema group sister to that clade, and went so far as to recommend synonymising Aequidens with Cichlasoma while shifting two Guyanan species (A. potaroensis and A. paloemeuensis) into Krobia. That proposal has not been generally accepted; subsequent multilocus work by López-Fernández, Winemiller and Honeycutt (2010, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol. 55:1070–1086) instead suggested that the diadema and tetramerus groups together form a plausibly monophyletic unit. Both camps agree only that more data are needed. On top of the genus-level uncertainty, the type species itself is suspect: it has long been hypothesised, and is noted by Seriously Fish, that A. tetramerus 'as currently recognised' is a complex of related fishes rather than a single taxon, so several of its colour forms may eventually be split off as distinct species. Aequidens, in short, is a genus still in motion.

Distribution & habitat

The surviving Aequidens are lowland fishes of tropical South America, and as a group they blanket much of the northern half of the continent. The type species sets the pattern: A. tetramerus is one of the most widespread of all South American cichlids, recorded across the Amazon basin in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil and Bolivia, through the Tocantins and Parnaíba drainages, the Guianas (French Guiana, Suriname and Guyana), and the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and Colombia (FishBase; Seriously Fish). Other species occupy more circumscribed ranges within this footprint — A. metae in the Meta/Orinoco system, A. plagiozonatus in the Paraguay drainage, and a cluster of recently-described forms (A. epae, A. gerciliae, A. michaeli, A. mauesanus, A. pirilampo and others) in specific Amazonian tributaries.

Ecologically, Aequidens are creatures of quiet water. Seriously Fish describes A. tetramerus as a habitat generalist that nonetheless favours slow-moving or still biotopes with well-structured substrates — submerged roots, branches and leaf litter — and that pushes into flooded forest, floodplain lakes and oxbows during the high-water season. They turn up more often in smaller tributary creeks than in the main river channels, and tolerate a wide chemical range: FishBase records a pH range from roughly 4.9 to 7.5 and soft-to-moderate hardness, spanning black, clear and white waters, with the more acidic blackwaters apparently preferred. This is the unglamorous, structurally complex, low-flow lowland habitat that defines the genus — not the rocky shorelines of the African rift lakes, but the tangled margins of Amazonian and Guianan streams.

Morphology

Aequidens are mid-sized, laterally-compressed cichlids of fairly conventional 'acara' build — moderately deep-bodied, with a rounded head and the unexceptional fin counts of the tribe Cichlasomatini. They are larger than the dwarf Laetacara that were split from them but smaller than many true Cichlasoma; A. tetramerus, among the bigger members, reaches about 6.5 in standard length (the largest officially-recorded specimen measured 6.5 in SL) and roughly 7.5 in total length, with FishBase citing a maximum published weight of around 157 g. Most congeners are somewhat smaller.

The genus's most consistent visual signature is its flank patterning. A dark midlateral spot or blotch, frequently set on or near a broken lateral band of vertical bars, runs along the side of the body — the feature that gives several species their popular 'saddle' or 'port' names and that does much of the work in field identification. Species-level diagnosis often rests on the geometry of this pattern: the 2023 rio Correntes form, for example, is separated from its close relative A. plagiozonatus by having obliquely-slanted dark flank bars rather than vertical ones, plus a discontinuous lateral band and a dark cheek spot. The original 'equal teeth' character that named the genus distinguishes Aequidens from enlarged-toothed relatives but is not, on its own, enough to bound the genus cleanly — which is part of why the group has been so taxonomically slippery. Colour is strongly locality-dependent: A. tetramerus alone ranges from the grey-blue-green Brazilian fish to the prized Ecuadorian and Peruvian forms that flush red or orange across the lower head and belly in breeding condition.

Ecology & diet

Aequidens are omnivores, leaning carnivorous in the wild. FishBase reports that A. tetramerus feeds primarily on insects, and secondarily on small fishes and plant material, with an estimated trophic level around 3.2; Seriously Fish similarly characterises the wild diet as dominated by invertebrates. Functionally these are opportunistic mid-water and benthic foragers of slow streams and flooded margins, taking aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, other invertebrates and whatever plant and detrital matter comes with them — the generalist diet that suits a generalist habitat.

They are territorial, particularly around spawning, and where small enough tankmates are available they will predate them, but they are not specialised piscivores in the mould of Cichla or the pike cichlids (Crenicichla) with which they co-occur. In a well-documented community on the lower rio Madeira, A. tetramerus shares its water with a long roster of characins, catfishes and other cichlids including Cichla, Crenicichla and Biotodoma — a reminder that the acaras occupy a middle rung of the lowland fish community, large and aggressive enough to hold a territory, but small enough to be prey themselves for the apex predators of the same streams.

Reproduction

This is the point where the genus's history matters most for getting the biology right. Aequidens proper are biparental substrate spawners — they are not mouthbrooders. A pair cleans a flat surface (a stone, a submerged log, sometimes a broad leaf), deposits the eggs in the open, and both parents then guard the clutch and shepherd the free-swimming fry, with A. tetramerus releasing on the order of a thousand eggs per spawning (FishBase; Seriously Fish). Males colour up and grow larger than females, develop extended unpaired fins, and take the more aggressive guarding role; the care is genuinely shared, in the classic Neotropical pair-bonded model.

The widespread belief that 'acaras' brood eggs in the mouth comes from the genera that were split off, not from Aequidens as now restricted. Most conspicuously, Bujurquina — carved out of Aequidens by Kullander in 1986 — are larvophilous (delayed) mouthbrooders: a Bujurquina pair spawns on a mobile substrate such as a leaf and guards the eggs externally at first, then takes the hatched larvae into the mouth, an intermediate parental mode that sits evolutionarily between open substrate-guarding and full maternal mouthbrooding. Tahuantinsuyoa shows comparable delayed brooding. Confusing these relatives with Aequidens is an easy mistake precisely because they were once the same genus, but it is a mistake: within Aequidens sensu stricto the reproductive mode is uniform open-substrate spawning with biparental care, and no living member broods in the mouth.

In the aquarium

Acaras have a long and affectionate history in the hobby, and the surviving Aequidens are, on the whole, hardy and rewarding fish — though many of the cichlids sold loosely as 'acaras' (blue acara, green terror, electric blue acara) are in fact Andinoacara, the genus split off from Aequidens, a distinction worth keeping straight when reading old aquarium literature. For true Aequidens such as A. tetramerus, hobby sources (Seriously Fish, Practical Fishkeeping) recommend a tank with a footprint of at least about 120 by 17.5 in for a single pair, and considerably more for a group, furnished with a soft sandy substrate, driftwood, scattered roots and a few flat stones to serve as spawning sites, under relatively dim lighting that suits a leaf-litter fish.

Water should be warm (roughly 75–81 °F) and, ideally, soft and slightly acidic, though the genus's broad tolerance makes it forgiving; blackwater-origin populations may genuinely require acidic conditions. Two practical cautions recur. First, these cichlids are sensitive to deteriorating water quality and should never go into an immature tank — large, frequent water changes and generous filtration (positioned to avoid strong flow) are advised, and a sandy substrate calls for mechanical filtration tailored to fine particles. Second, the standard route to a breeding pair is to grow on a group of six or more young fish and let pairs form naturally, removing the surplus, since adults are territorial and males can over-pursue females. Diet in captivity should reflect the wild invertebrate bias: good sinking dry foods supplemented with live or frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp.

Conservation

There is no genus-wide conservation crisis for Aequidens, and the dominant story is one of common, resilient, wide-ranging fishes. The type species, A. tetramerus, was assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern in 2020 — unsurprising for one of the most widespread cichlids on the continent — and FishBase rates its resilience as medium, with a population doubling time of well under five years. As a group the genus is harvested only lightly: minor commercial and aquarium-trade use, low fishing vulnerability, and harmless to humans. Several species have not been formally evaluated simply because they are recently described and narrowly known, which reflects data gaps rather than documented decline.

The real risks are local and habitat-based rather than genus-wide. The more range-restricted Aequidens — the recently-described Amazonian endemics, and forms such as the 2023 upper rio Correntes species, which is confined to a couple of Cerrado-biome tributaries of the upper rio Paraguai — are the ones exposed to habitat pressure, since basins in the agricultural frontier of central Brazil face intense land-use change, deforestation and water-quality degradation. For these localized fishes the calculus is the familiar one for narrow endemics: the species itself may be perfectly healthy, but its security is only as good as that of the handful of streams it lives in. The widespread acaras are in no danger; the newly-split and newly-found ones deserve watching.
