Taxonomy & naming
Leptopanchax aureoguttatus was described by da Cruz in 1974 from a ditch running parallel to the road between Paranaguá and Matinhos, in the state of Paraná, Brazil (approximately 25°30'S, 48°25'W). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records da Cruz (1974) as the authority, with the parentheses indicating that the name has been recombined from its original generic placement since description.
The genus Leptolebias belongs to the neotropical annual-killifish radiation within the order Cyprinodontiformes and the suborder Aplocheiloidei. Phylogenetic studies have demonstrated that the annual life cycle — in which embryos undergo a period of arrested development (diapause) to survive seasonal pool desiccation — has arisen multiple independent times across Africa and South America within this suborder, and Leptolebias falls within that South American annual lineage. The genus is restricted to the Atlantic coastal drainages and associated coastal plain basins of south-eastern Brazil.
The species distribution, as documented by Costa (2008), extends from the Ribeira do Iguape river basin in the state of São Paulo southward into the coastal basins draining to Paranaguá Bay in Paraná, including populations on the barrier islands of Comprida, Cardoso, and Mel. No subspecies are currently recognised.
This fish was long listed as Leptolebias aureoguttatus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Leptopanchax, and the current combination Leptopanchax aureoguttatus is followed here.
Morphology
Leptopanchax aureoguttatus is a small fish even by killifish standards. Costa (2008) records a mean standard length of 0.88 in in males and 0.65 in in females, with the largest measured specimen reaching 1.17 in SL. FishBase gives a maximum total length of 1.6 in for males. The body is slender and slightly laterally compressed, typical of the genus.
Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Males exhibit a dark-red crimson to orangish-red body covered with longitudinal rows of golden-blue iridescent spots — the specific epithet aureoguttatus references this pattern directly (Latin: aureo, golden; guttatus, spotted or drop-marked). The fins are similarly coloured and patterned. Females are substantially plainer: light yellowish-brown overall, lacking the vivid spotting of the male. This degree of colour difference between the sexes is characteristic of annual killies in which males compete for limited female spawning time during a short wet season.
Habitat
Leptopanchax aureoguttatus inhabits shallow, temporary pools — described by Costa (2008) as ephemeral pools within forest interiors or swampy depressions. The water at these sites is tea-coloured and strongly acidic, with pH values of 3.5 to 4.0 recorded. The substrate consists of leaf litter and organic detritus, with no rooted aquatic macrophytes present except at pool margins where grasses (Poaceae), cattails (Typhaceae), and sedges (Cyperaceae) may establish. No other fish species were reported as sympatric in surveys of occupied pools, indicating the species exists in a largely exclusive microhabitat.
These pools are entirely dependent on seasonal rainfall and dry out annually. The fish have no means of migrating to permanent water; survival of the population across the dry season is achieved entirely through the buried, diapause-capable eggs rather than through any persistence of adult fish. Water temperature in southern Brazil's coastal plain ranges seasonally but pools warm quickly in direct sunlight during the wet season; FishBase records a maintenance temperature of 73 °F as suitable in captivity.
The known range — the Ribeira do Iguape basin and the Paranaguá Bay catchment, including three islands — reflects a naturally restricted and fragmented distribution tied to the Atlantic Forest biome.
Feeding
As with other annual killies of similar size, Leptopanchax aureoguttatus is a carnivore targeting small aquatic invertebrates. The ephemeral pools it occupies support communities of copepods, cladocerans, ostracods, chironomid larvae, and other microinvertebrates that bloom with the return of water each wet season, providing the food base that supports rapid growth to reproductive maturity.
In the aquarium, the species accepts small live and frozen invertebrates — Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, copepods, Daphnia, and chironomid (bloodworm) larvae are all appropriate. Prepared micro-pellets may be taken by acclimated fish. Because adults are small (under 1.2 in SL) and live in pairs or small groups in captivity, food items must be appropriately sized.
Mating
Leptopanchax aureoguttatus is an annual killifish with a substrate-spawning mating system. In the wild, mating activity is concentrated in the wet season — the period when pools exist and adults are present. Males display actively to females using their vivid crimson-and-gold colouration, and competition among males is likely intense given the short window in which reproduction must occur before pools dry.
Spawning is a paired, intimate event rather than open-water egg-scattering: the male and female press together and dive into or press against the soft substrate — peat, detritus, and leaf litter — releasing eggs and sperm directly into the bottom medium. Each spawning dive produces a small number of eggs. The pair may spawn repeatedly over the course of the wet season, depositing eggs at different points across the pool floor. No nest is constructed and no parental care is provided after the eggs are buried.
Breeding
The eggs of Leptopanchax aureoguttatus are drought-resistant and enter a state of diapause — arrested embryonic development — while buried in the dry substrate during the months when the pool has evaporated. Research on annual killifish embryos has identified up to three discrete diapause stages: Diapause I occurs very early in embryogenesis; Diapause II, the most ecologically critical stage, arrests development after approximately 38 somite pairs have formed and represents the principal mechanism for surviving the dry season; Diapause III occurs in fully developed embryos ready to hatch, providing a buffer against premature hatching if conditions are briefly wet but not yet stable.
When rainfall refills the pool, water contact and associated cues (temperature change, oxygenation, possibly chemical signals) trigger emergence from diapause and rapid hatching. Fry are miniature versions of the adults and must feed immediately; the invertebrate bloom that accompanies pool filling provides the prey needed for the fast growth that allows fish to reach reproductive maturity before the pool dries again — the entire above-ground life cycle typically spans less than a calendar year, and many individuals may live only a few months as adults.
In the aquarium, the standard killifish-hobby protocol for annual species applies: pairs are spawned over a layer of peat or coconut coir. The medium is then squeezed to remove excess water, sealed in a plastic bag or container, labelled with the date and species, and stored in a dark location at an appropriate temperature for a diapause period (commonly 6–12 weeks for Leptolebias). The medium is then re-wetted with soft, slightly acidic water to induce hatching. Fry accept Artemia nauplii and micro-worms from first feeding.
In the aquarium
Leptopanchax aureoguttatus is an uncommon species in the killifish hobby, maintained mainly by specialists and killifish society members. It is best kept in small, dedicated species aquaria — a 5–11 US gal tank is ample for one or two pairs. Water chemistry should reflect the species' natural habitat: soft, acidic conditions (pH in the range of 5.0–6.5 in captivity, though the wild populations tolerate even lower values), low hardness, and temperatures around 72–75 °F. Tannin-stained water produced by dried leaves or peat filtration is appropriate and reduces stress.
The tank should be densely furnished with dried leaf litter and a peat or coir substrate layer for spawning. Low water levels (3.9–5.9 in) are typical for breeding setups. Aeration should be gentle; these are still-water fish not adapted to current. The species is peaceful toward its own kind and toward unrelated fish of similar size, but because it is so small (under 1.2 in) it should not be kept with any fish large enough to regard it as prey.
Annual killifish from seasonally unstable habitats are not long-lived in the aquarium regardless of conditions — most breeders expect adult fish to senesce and die within 6–12 months. Maintaining the line requires regular peat/coir spawning harvests and management of hatching batches on a rolling schedule. The British Killifish Association (BKA) publishes archived guidance on diapause husbandry and breeding protocols for annual South American species including Leptolebias, and dedicated killifish society contacts are the best source for obtaining captive-bred stock, as the species is rarely available in general trade.
Conservation
Leptopanchax aureoguttatus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (status: Not Evaluated). Costa (2008), in a comprehensive monograph on the genus, assessed the species as vulnerable but not immediately endangered at the time of writing, noting that its known localities fell within forest that remained relatively well preserved. However, several features of its biology and distribution make it inherently sensitive to land-use change.
The species is a single-drainage endemic, known only from the Ribeira do Iguape system in São Paulo and the coastal Paranaguá Bay catchment in Paraná — a naturally limited range. Its habitat consists entirely of ephemeral pools within Atlantic Forest, one of the world's most threatened biomes, with the vast majority of its original extent already converted to agriculture, pastoralism, and urban development. The temporary pools that annual killies depend on are especially vulnerable because they are not legally recognised as permanent water bodies in most jurisdictions and are easily drained, filled, or converted. Introduced species — particularly mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) and other livebearers released as biological control agents — have devastated annual killifish populations wherever they have established, outcompeting the killies for food and directly preying on fry.
Given the restricted range, specialised habitat, and the broader pattern of Atlantic Forest loss, a formal IUCN assessment of Leptopanchax aureoguttatus is warranted. Killifish hobbyists and institutions maintaining captive populations play a disproportionate role in the ex-situ conservation of annual species with small wild ranges, and the BKA and affiliated associations have historically contributed to awareness and husbandry documentation for such taxa.
