Leptopanchax splendens is a miniature annual killifish endemic to a handful of seasonal pools nestled at the base of the Serra dos Orgãos and Serra de Petrópolis ranges in the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Described by George S. Myers in 1942 from water holes near the foot of these mountains, the species then effectively vanished from science for more than six decades before being rediscovered near its type locality in the Rio Estrela basin — one of the more dramatic reappearances in South American killifish history. Small even by killifish standards (maximum 3.0 cm total length), it shares with its genus-mates a fully annual life cycle: adults spawn by driving fertilised eggs into soft mud or peat, the dry season erases the adult generation entirely, and buried diapausing eggs carry the population forward until rain refills the pools.

Taxonomy & naming

Myers (1942) first described the species as Cynolebias splendens, placing it within the broad catch-all genus Cynolebias that then accommodated most South American annual killifishes. The type locality is recorded as water holes or ponds along the base of the Serra de Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil — a precise and unusual habitat description that anchors the species firmly in the highlands south of the city. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) confirms the type locality and lists the species as valid under the current binomial.

The genus Hypsolebias was erected by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2006 to receive a clade of South American annuals previously scattered across Cynolebias and allied genera; molecular and morphological phylogenetic work supported the separation. The SciELO-published taxonomy covering the genus places Hypsolebias at roughly 55 species, all Brazilian, inhabiting seasonal pools on the Cerrado, Caatinga, and Atlantic Forest biomes. L. splendens sits at the Atlantic Forest end of the genus range — geographically and ecologically distinct from the Cerrado/Caatinga core of Hypsolebias diversity. The species authority is therefore presented in parentheses — (Myers, 1942) — because the name was coined under a different generic placement and has since been transferred.

A ResearchGate-archived rediscovery paper documents the population found near the type locality in the Rio Estrela basin after more than 60 years without a confirmed scientific record — an absence that heightened concern about the taxon's survival and underscored the difficulty of surveying ephemeral Atlantic Forest pools.

Morphology

Leptopanchax splendens is a small, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum of 1.2 in total length (FishBase; It Rains Fishes), making it one of the smaller members of its genus. Published meristics from the It Rains Fishes database give D13, A18, and a lateral scale count of 24 — counts consistent with other mid-sized Hypsolebias.

As in most annual killifish, sexual dimorphism in colour is pronounced. Males in breeding condition display the vivid, iridescent patterning that earned the species its epithet — the specific name splendens (Latin: shining, splendid) refers directly to male ornamentation. The precise colour description in available sources is not detailed beyond the general pattern expected in the genus: males carry iridescent blue-green to turquoise lateral scales overlaid with reddish or orange markings, with the unpaired fins often edged in colour. Females are cryptically coloured, showing the duller brownish-olive tones typical of female annual killifishes across South America. The body is deep-chested relative to length, a characteristic of the genus, and the caudal fin in adult males may be extended or rounded depending on population.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Atlantic Forest zone of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the base of the Serra dos Orgãos and Serra de Petrópolis mountain ranges — a geographically restricted area at roughly 23°S–24°S latitude. The Catalog of Fishes type locality specifically records 'water holes or ponds along the base of Serra de Petrópolis', and the rediscovery was made in the Rio Estrela basin, confirming that the species persists within this narrow highland footzone.

The pools it inhabits are classic South American annual-killifish habitat: shallow, seasonal depressions that fill with rainwater during the wet season and dry out completely during the dry months. These pools typically develop a soft substrate of accumulated leaf litter, detritus, and fine mud — the medium in which the species buries its diapausing eggs. Vegetation is minimal compared to lowland pools; the surrounding Atlantic Forest canopy provides shade, leaf input, and humidity. Feeding

Like all Hypsolebias, L. splendens is a carnivore in the wild, feeding opportunistically on invertebrates available in its seasonal pools. Typical prey for small annual killifishes in Atlantic Forest habitats includes microcrustaceans (copepods, cladocerans), small aquatic insect larvae, worms, and any other invertebrates that colonise the pool during the wet season. In the aquarium, South American annuals of this size category are maintained on a diet of small live or frozen invertebrates: freshly hatched Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, Daphnia, mosquito larvae, and chironomid larvae (bloodworm). Commercially prepared micro-pellets may be accepted by acclimated individuals. The short natural lifespan and rapid growth rate of annual killies make a varied, protein-rich diet important for condition and reproductive success.

Mating

Leptopanchax splendens follows the annual killifish reproductive mode in full: paired spawning dives into soft substrate, with the fertilised eggs remaining buried through the dry season in a state of developmental arrest (diapause). In the wild, the arrival of seasonal rains triggers spawning behaviour as pools refill and temperatures stabilise.

Males are conspicuously coloured and actively court females; the typical mating sequence in Hypsolebias involves the male swimming alongside and beneath the female, displaying his flanks, then the pair diving together into the substrate at the moment of egg deposition and fertilisation. Each dive deposits a small number of eggs a few millimetres below the surface of the mud or peat. Courtship and spawning continue across the wet season, and because the adults die when the pool dries, there is no opportunity for parental care — the eggs are entirely self-sufficient through the drought phase. Breeding

The breeding biology of L. splendens is that of an obligate annual: eggs fertilised and buried in the substrate must pass through diapause — a period of arrested embryonic development — before hatching is triggered by rehydration. To hatch, the stored peat is re-wetted with slightly acidic soft water; fry emerge within hours to days. Leptopanchax splendens is regarded as difficult to maintain in captivity (FishBase), which in the context of annual killifishes typically reflects sensitivity to water quality, intolerance of high temperatures, and the need for careful management of the diapause cycle rather than outright fragility. The species is among the smaller Hypsolebias, which means it can be accommodated in modest aquaria — a 8–11 US gal tank is adequate for a pair — but water quality must be well managed. A soft, slightly acidic substrate of peat or fine sand is appropriate, along with gentle filtration that does not generate strong currents.

Water parameters should reflect the subtropical Atlantic Forest origin: temperature in the 68–77 °F range (cooler than many tropical killifishes), soft and slightly acidic water. The killifish care literature recommends 73–81 °F for South American annuals in this group, but the montane provenance of L. splendens suggests the lower end of that range is safer for long-term condition. Males should be kept with sufficient females to diffuse aggression; a trio (one male, two females) in a species tank is a standard approach.

It is a single-locality endemic tied to seasonal pools at the base of two mountain ranges in the heavily deforested Atlantic Forest biome of Rio de Janeiro State — one of the most biodiversity-rich and most threatened biomes in the Americas. The Atlantic Forest has been reduced to approximately 12–16% of its original extent, with Rio de Janeiro State among the most heavily impacted areas.

The rediscovery of L. splendens in the Rio Estrela basin after more than 60 years without a confirmed scientific record — documented in the ResearchGate-archived rediscovery paper — underscores how poorly monitored its seasonal pool habitat has been, and how tenuous the species' persistence may be.
