Taxonomy & naming
Leptopanchax citrinipinnis was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa, Lacerda, and Tanizaki in 1990, with the type locality on the Atlantic coastal plains of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The authority is presented in parentheses following the convention that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being moved to Leptolebias. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name; FishBase lists an authority year of 1988 in some records, but the prevailing literature citation is 1990.
The genus Leptolebias belongs to the subfamily Cynolebiinae within the family Rivulidae, and falls within the Cynopoecilinae clade of seasonally breeding South American killifishes. This group comprises small-bodied, sexually dichromatic annuals native to the coastal drainages of southeastern South America. The genus name Leptolebias combines the Greek leptos (slender, fine) with lebias, an old genus-level name applied to small cyprinodontiform fishes. The species epithet citrinipinnis is Latin for 'citrine-finned' or 'yellow-finned', a reference to the yellowish colouration of the fins in males.
The taxonomy of Leptolebias as a whole has undergone revision and remains under scrutiny; the genus has at times been subsumed into or closely affiliated with Simpsonichthys and related genera. The species-level limits within Leptolebias are partly defined by colour pattern and biogeography, given the patchy distribution of isolated coastal-plain populations.
This fish was long listed as Leptolebias citrinipinnis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Leptopanchax, and the current combination Leptopanchax citrinipinnis is followed here.
Morphology
Leptopanchax citrinipinnis is a small killifish reaching a maximum recorded total length of 2 in (FishBase), though most adults encountered in breeding populations are smaller. The body plan is the compressed, somewhat elongate shape typical of Cynolebias-group annuals: a moderately deep body tapering to a rounded caudal fin, with the dorsal and anal fins set far back and nearly opposite one another — an arrangement associated with the lateral spawning embrace used during egg deposition.
Males are the more striking sex. The fin colouration that gives the species its name — citrus-yellow tones in the unpaired fins — is set against body colouration that may include iridescent scales and contrasting markings typical of the genus. Females are cryptically coloured in the plain, brownish-olive pattern that is consistent across most female annual killies of the region, providing camouflage in the leaf litter and murky water of their seasonal pool habitats. Sexual dimorphism in fin length is moderate; males develop extended fin rays with maturity.
Habitat
The natural habitat of Leptopanchax citrinipinnis is the seasonal and temporary pools of the Atlantic coastal plain of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — low-lying, often forested terrain that floods during the rainy season and desiccates completely during the dry months. These pools typically form in depressions among coastal restinga vegetation or within forest litter, and they are characterised by dark, acidic water. The geographical position of the coastal plains of Rio de Janeiro places this species within the Atlantic Forest biome, one of the world's most biodiverse and most threatened ecosystems. The pools that Leptopanchax citrinipinnis inhabits are ephemeral features of this landscape, and the fish's entire life strategy is calibrated to their seasonal rhythm. The cool subtropical climate of the region means water temperatures in the natural habitat are relatively mild; captive keepers report optimal temperatures of 64–73 °F, reflecting the cooler winters of southeastern Brazil compared with the tropical lowlands further north.
The species is part of a broader assemblage of coastal-plain annual killies whose distributions are naturally fragmented across isolated drainage basins, making each population effectively an island whose connectivity with others depends on occasional hydrological connectivity during high-rainfall events.
Feeding
Like other members of the family Rivulidae, Leptopanchax citrinipinnis is a carnivore in the wild, foraging on the small invertebrates available in seasonal pools: zooplankton, microcrustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, and similar prey. The fish is a visual predator, and the relatively clear but stained water of its acidic forest pools supports adequate prey detection.
In the aquarium, the species accepts a range of small live and frozen foods without difficulty: micro-worms, Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and finely chopped bloodworm are standard fare. The diminutive size — adults well under 2 in — constrains the prey size that can be offered; food items should be appropriately small. Dry foods are accepted by many captive-bred individuals but live and frozen foods support better condition and colour.
Mating
Leptopanchax citrinipinnis is an annual killifish and reproduces by the soil-spawning method characteristic of its genus. Males court females with lateral displays, spreading and vibrating their coloured fins to exhibit the citrine tones that give the species its name. Courtship in annual killies of this group is typically vigorous, with males actively pursuing females through the water column.
When a receptive female is approached, the pair come alongside one another and execute the spawning embrace: the male curves his body around the female, pressing the paired fish together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. Crucially, unlike plant-spawning killies that deposit eggs on vegetation, the pair of Leptolebias presses downward at the moment of spawning and the female drives the tiny eggs into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus on the pool bottom. The eggs, which are very small (under 0.04 in in diameter according to It Rains Fishes observations of the genus), are embedded in the sediment rather than left exposed.
Breeding
The eggs of Leptopanchax citrinipinnis are buried in the substrate and enter diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development — as the pool begins to dry out. Adults die when the water disappears completely at the end of the rainy season, leaving the diapausing eggs as the only surviving stage of the population through the dry period. The embryos remain dormant in the sediment, surviving desiccation in a metabolically depressed state, until the return of rain and flooding the following season triggers hatching.
Incubation periods for Leptolebias eggs require six to twelve weeks at minimum before the embryos are ready to hatch, and the dry-storage phase in the hobby typically mirrors this: the spawning medium (usually peat moss or coir) is removed from the tank, lightly dried, bagged, and stored at room temperature for the appropriate period before being re-wetted. Re-wetting with soft, slightly acidic water at a moderate temperature triggers hatching, which may occur in waves over several days as embryos at different diapause stages respond. Fry are tiny at hatching and require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before advancing to nauplii. Growth is rapid; adults may be sexually mature within weeks under good conditions, reflecting the compressed life cycle of a fish that must reproduce, lay, and die within a single season.
In the aquarium
Leptopanchax citrinipinnis is a specialist fish suited to experienced killifish keepers rather than a general community aquarium. Its small size, specific water requirements, and annual life cycle — with the attendant need to manage egg incubation and fry rearing across the breeding season — place it firmly in the category of a hobbyist project rather than a display fish.
The species does best in soft, acidic water replicating its natural habitat: pH in the range of 4.5–6.5, very low hardness, and temperatures of 64–72 °F. A dark substrate of peat or fine sand, a layer of leaf litter, and subdued lighting create appropriate conditions. A dedicated breeding tank of modest size — 8–16 US gal — with a peat moss spawning layer of several centimetres serves as both living quarters and egg depository. Regular removal and dry storage of the spawning medium is the central management task. Because adult lifespans are inherently short, maintaining the species requires commitment to a continuous cycle of egg collection, storage, and fry rearing.
Leptopanchax citrinipinnis is not widely available in the trade and is kept primarily by specialist killifish societies and dedicated collectors. Acquisition is most reliably achieved through killifish club networks rather than commercial retailers, and maintaining a breeding colony is the surest way to preserve access to the species.
Conservation
Leptopanchax citrinipinnis has not received a formal IUCN Red List assessment — it is listed as Not Evaluated (NE) — yet the conservation outlook for the species and its close relatives is one of the more alarming in freshwater ichthyology. The entire genus Leptolebias is regarded by specialists as endangered, reflecting the catastrophic transformation of the Atlantic coastal plain of southeastern Brazil where these fishes live. Over the past fifty years, the coastal lowlands of Rio de Janeiro and neighbouring states have been converted to urban development, agricultural land, and road infrastructure at a rate that has eliminated or fragmented the vast majority of the seasonal pools that constitute Leptolebias habitat. The It Rains Fishes overview of the genus notes explicitly that habitat destruction by urbanisation and agriculture over the past fifty years is the defining threat to all species in the group.
The biology of Leptopanchax citrinipinnis makes it acutely vulnerable: it is tied to a single pool type in a single climatic region, its adult dispersal capacity is nil (adults never leave their pool), and its natural range is almost certainly a handful of isolated coastal-plain sites within a narrow geographical band. Introduction of mosquitofish (Gambusia) and other invasive species to coastal wetlands compounds the direct habitat loss. Without a formal assessment and targeted site-level protection, the species faces the real possibility of extinction from the loss of its last remaining pools, most of which lie within one of the most densely populated regions of South America.
