Taxonomy & naming
Poecilia versicolor was first described by the German-British zoologist Albert Günther in 1866, originally placed in the genus Girardinus as Girardinus versicolor; it has since circulated under the synonym Poecilia versicolor as well, reflecting the long-running debate over whether Limia deserves full generic rank. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and the species is currently treated as Poecilia versicolor (Günther, 1866) — the parentheses recording the move out of Günther's original genus. It belongs to the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae, within the order Cyprinodontiformes.
The genus Limia is a monophyletic group of livebearers endemic to the Greater Antilles — Hispaniola, Cuba, Jamaica and Grand Cayman — and is sometimes treated as a subgenus of Poecilia rather than a genus in its own right. Most species, including P. versicolor, are restricted to a single island or even a single drainage. The genus name derives from the Latin limus, meaning mud, a reference to the detritus-grazing feeding habits of these fishes; the species epithet versicolor means "of various colours," the same idea behind the English common name "varicolored limia."

Morphology
Poecilia versicolor is a small poeciliid showing the sexual size dimorphism typical of the family. Males reach roughly 1.3 in standard length, while the larger females grow to about 1.8 in standard length, measurements drawn from the Atlas of North American Freshwater Fishes (Lee, Platania & Burgess, 1983). The body is the compact, slightly elongate shape common to stream-dwelling limias, built for grazing among substrate and submerged surfaces rather than for open-water pursuit.
As in all poeciliids, the most reliable way to sex the fish is the male's gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — which distinguishes mature males from the deeper-bodied, plainer females. Beyond the size difference and the gonopodium, detailed colour and meristic data for wild P. versicolor are sparse in the cached sources; the name versicolor implies some degree of patterning, but precise descriptions of male nuptial colour are not available here, and this profile errs toward saying less rather than guessing at it.
Habitat
Poecilia versicolor is endemic to the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola, where it occupies the Haina River drainage and other southward-draining streams of central and southeastern parts of the country. The type material and known range include localities such as Arroyo Jibana, around 6 mi south of Madrigal. Its extent of occurrence is small — estimated between roughly 91 and 350 mi² — distributed across an estimated 6 to 10 threat-based locations, the kind of restricted footprint that drives its Vulnerable listing.
The fish lives in permanent rivers, streams and creeks classed as inland wetlands, in coastal and hilly terrain generally below about 1640 ft above sea level. The water is warm and tends toward the neutral-to-slightly-alkaline, moderately hard chemistry characteristic of these Hispaniolan limestone-influenced drainages. FishBase records the species as a freshwater, demersal, non-migratory tropical fish, consistent with a life spent close to the bottom and the stream margins rather than in open current.
Feeding
Like its congeners, Poecilia versicolor is an omnivorous micro-grazer with a low trophic level — FishBase places it around 3.0 — feeding on the film of algae, diatoms, detritus and aufwuchs that coats submerged surfaces, together with whatever small invertebrates it can take. The genus name itself, from the Latin for mud, was coined in reference to exactly this habit of grubbing through soft, organically rich substrate for food.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts the usual range of small foods — quality flake and micro-pellets supplemented with small live and frozen items such as Daphnia and brine shrimp — but a meaningful share of vegetable or algal matter suits its natural diet and keeps it in good condition. As with other small, near-continuous grazers, frequent small feedings are more appropriate than infrequent large ones.
Mating
Reproduction in Poecilia versicolor is internal, as in all poeciliids. Males transfer sperm to females using the gonopodium, the modified anal-fin organ that defines the live-bearing toothcarps, and fertilisation occurs inside the female's body. Females reach sexual maturity at a small size — around 1.1 in — and, in common with other livebearers, can store viable sperm internally, allowing successive broods to be produced from a single mating.
Detailed courtship behaviour specific to P. versicolor is not documented in the cached sources. By analogy with other limias and poeciliids, males are expected to pursue females persistently and to use a mix of display and sneak-copulation tactics, but this profile does not assert population-specific mating detail — including whether superfetation (the carrying of multiple broods at different developmental stages) occurs in this species — that the cache does not establish.
Breeding
Poecilia versicolor is a viviparous livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Life-history work on the subgenus Limia (Cohen, Regus, Reynoso & Mastro, 2015, Journal of Fish Biology) reports that females of this species average about 22 offspring per brood, a moderate fecundity for a fish of its size.
The species is regarded as resilient, with a population doubling time estimated at under 15 months — a reflection of the rapid maturation and continuous reproduction typical of poeciliids. In the aquarium this translates into an easy-to-breed fish: as with other livebearers, dense planting or floating cover is needed to give newborn fry refuge, since adults will eat their own young. The fry are born fully formed and able to feed at once, growing quickly on fine foods and newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Poecilia versicolor has been present in the ornamental aquarium trade for a long time — it was imported to Germany as early as 1918 — but it remains a specialist's fish rather than a mainstream shop species, more likely to be found through livebearer clubs and hobbyist networks than in general retail. No versicolor-specific care guide appears in the cached sources, so husbandry here is drawn from genus-level knowledge: Limia are hardy, peaceful, warm-water livebearers that do well in stable, slightly hard, alkaline water.
A temperature in the low-to-high 20s Celsius (about 72–81 °F), a pH around 7.0–7.5, and moderate hardness suit the species, mirroring its native Hispaniolan stream chemistry. As an undemanding small grazer it adapts readily to aquarium life and breeds freely, making it a rewarding fish for keepers interested in maintaining and conserving the less-common Antillean limias. The main husbandry tasks are population control and providing cover for fry, rather than any particular delicacy on the part of the adults.
Conservation
Poecilia versicolor is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii) (assessed 21 May 2020, published 2021; assessors Rodríguez-Silva, Rodríguez, Schlupp & Lyons). The listing reflects its small extent of occurrence, its restriction to a handful of threat-based locations, and a continuing decline in habitat quality. It is also listed as Endangered on the Dominican Republic's national Red List (MIMARENA, 2011). The overall population trend is recorded as unknown, and the species is noted as no longer dominant where it co-occurs with introduced livebearers.
The threats are concentrated and human-driven: deforestation, soil erosion and sedimentation from smallholder coffee agriculture; urban, industrial and domestic pollution in the Haina basin; and alluvial mining. Compounding these is a suite of invasive fishes — Poecilia reticulata, Poecilia mexicana, Xiphophorus hellerii, the tiger barb Puntigrus tetrazona and the suckermouth catfish Pterygoplichthys pardalis — that compete with and displace the native limia. For aquarists, this gives the species a genuine conservation dimension: maintaining clean, well-documented captive lines of a Vulnerable island endemic is a meaningful contribution, while released aquarium fish are part of the very pressure threatening it in the wild.
