Beaufortia loos is a small hillstream loach of the family Balitoridae, described by Mai in 1978 from Southeast Asian fast-water streams. Like all members of its genus it is a torrent specialist — the entire body is flattened into a hydrodynamic disc, allowing it to press against bare rock in currents that would dislodge almost any other fish. It grazes biofilm and diatoms from stone surfaces, and therein lies the challenge it poses to aquarists: without a mature, algae-covered rockscape and cool, powerfully oxygenated flow, it starves or suffocates quietly in an otherwise healthy-looking tank. Data on the species are sparse in both the scientific literature and hobby sources, and it remains Not Evaluated by the IUCN, a status that reflects limited field coverage rather than confirmed abundance.

Taxonomy & naming

Beaufortia loos was described by Nguyen Van Mai in 1978 and the original placement has been retained in the genus Pseudogastromyzon, a Balitoridae hillstream loach genus distributed across southern China, Vietnam, and adjacent Indochina. The parentheses around the authority — (Mai, 1978) — follow standard ichthyological convention indicating that the species was not originally placed in Pseudogastromyzon, though the genus is the current valid assignment under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer), the primary authority for valid fish names.

The genus Pseudogastromyzon belongs to the subfamily Gastromyzontinae within Balitoridae, a group of strongly rheophilic loaches convergently adapted to torrential stream life in Asia. The broader family Balitoridae (and related Gastromyzontidae in some classifications) has seen considerable rearrangement as molecular phylogenies have clarified relationships among hillstream loaches; species formerly spread across Gastromyzon, Sewellia and related genera have shifted around, and the older literature may refer to this species under a different combination. The Catalog of Fishes listing for Beaufortia loos should be treated as definitive for the valid name.

Morphology

Beaufortia loos shares the body plan common to all members of the genus: a strongly depressed, dorsoventrally flattened profile that functions as a biological suction device. The undersides of the pectoral and pelvic fins are broadened and held flat against rock, and the fish can maintain position in fast current with minimal muscular effort — releasing grip only to dart rapidly to a new patch of biofilm. Overall body length is typically under 2 in SL (standard length), making this a small fish even by hillstream loach standards.

The dorsal surface is patterned with brownish mottling or reticulation that provides cryptic camouflage against the rocky substrate. The head is broad and blunt, with eyes positioned dorsally to watch for threats from above while the fish feeds face-down on rock. The mouth is inferior and modified for rasping, with fleshy lips bearing papillae suited to scraping diatoms and algae from hard surfaces. Unlike botiid loaches, Pseudogastromyzon does not carry a prominent erectile suborbital spine, though the skin is lightly scaled and retains some sensitivity to harsh medications.

Habitat

This species inhabits fast-flowing, clear hill streams of Southeast Asia — the kinds of rocky torrents where current velocities are high enough to keep substrates swept clean of silt, leaving bare stone surfaces colonised by biofilm, diatoms, and encrusting algae. Water in these environments is cool relative to lowland tropical fish, highly oxygenated by constant turbulent surface mixing, and typically soft and slightly acidic to neutral. Temperatures in montane stream habitats of southern Indochina commonly fall in the range of 64–75 °F, well below the 79–82 °F kept in most community aquaria.

The species is strongly rheophilic — adapted to and dependent on current — and likely occupies the shallowest, fastest-moving sections of its home streams, where it can exploit the biofilm-rich faces of boulders and cobbles. Little detailed habitat data has been published for Beaufortia loos specifically, and the description above is drawn from the well-documented ecology of the genus as a whole and from what is known of comparable hillstream balitorids in southern Vietnam.

Feeding

Beaufortia loos is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer, using its modified inferior mouth to rasp diatoms, algae, microorganisms, and organic detritus from the surfaces of submerged rock. In the wild, a good-quality boulder in a fast stream carries a rich microbial carpet that provides most or all of a hillstream loach's nutritional needs; the fish works systematically across the surface, rarely moving to open water to hunt.

In the aquarium, this feeding style creates a straightforward but commonly violated requirement: the tank must be mature enough to carry visible algae and biofilm growth on rocks and glass before the fish is introduced. A newly set-up or sterile-looking tank provides almost nothing to graze, and a Pseudogastromyzon that cannot rasp a living surface will gradually waste away even if the water parameters are otherwise acceptable. Supplementary feeding with blanched courgette, cucumber, spirulina wafers, and small sinking foods provides useful support, but it does not replace the biofilm layer — which the fish will seek first. Small frozen or live invertebrate foods (microworm, baby brine shrimp) are accepted and improve condition.

Mating

Published sexing criteria for Beaufortia loos are not available in the accessible literature. In closely related hillstream loaches of the Gastromyzontinae, the sexes are often distinguished in mature specimens by the slightly greater body depth and broader abdomen of ripe females, and occasional reports describe males as having a subtly narrower, more streamlined body. The differences are modest and reliable identification generally requires side-by-side comparison of multiple individuals in condition.

Reproductive behaviour in the genus is not well documented. Based on the patterns seen across hillstream balitorids, mating likely involves males pursuing or hovering over receptive females on rock surfaces, with eggs deposited in crevices or among coarse gravel in fast-moving sections of the stream. The cool, well-oxygenated, high-flow conditions that hillstream loaches inhabit also characterise the spawning environment that a few related species are known to use in aquaria.

Breeding

Beaufortia loos is rarely if ever bred in home aquaria, and no verified breeding reports for this species appear in the accessible hobby or scientific literature. This is the honest position for most Pseudogastromyzon species: data are sparse, and the demanding habitat requirements — cool fast water, mature biofilm surface, precise water chemistry — are difficult to replicate consistently.

The genus belongs to a group in which a small number of related hillstream loaches (notably Sewellia lineolata) have been spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river biotope tanks. In those species, eggs are scattered among coarse gravel or deposited in crevices with no parental care; the adults take no further interest after spawning. If Beaufortia loos follows the same pattern, a keeper would need a well-established aquarium with strong directional flow, cool temperatures, a mature rock surface, and several individuals to raise any realistic prospect of spawning. Even then, success would be noteworthy. The trade is supplied entirely by wild-collected specimens.

In the aquarium

Beaufortia loos is a specialist fish that will not thrive in a generic community tank. The three requirements that must be met before acquiring it are cool water, powerful flow, and a mature biofilm surface — and all three must be in place simultaneously. A target temperature of roughly 64–75 °F suits the species; placing it in a tank kept at 79–82 °F for tropical community fish stresses the fish and accelerates the oxygen deficit that warm still water creates. A powerhead or circulation pump capable of producing strong directional current across a rock arrangement is not optional; without high flow the water does not hold the dissolved oxygen that a rheophilic loach requires.

The aquascape should consist primarily of smooth and textured river stones, ideally allowed to develop green or brown algal growth before fish are added. Sand or fine gravel fills gaps, and the overall effect should resemble a rocky hill stream rather than a planted display tank. A group of at least four to six individuals is recommended where possible — hillstream loaches kept singly are less active and settle less well. Being lightly scaled, the fish show some sensitivity to medications; if disease treatment is necessary, use products at half the standard dose and monitor closely. Because this species is wild-caught, a quarantine period with careful feeding to establish biofilm grazing is essential before introduction to a display tank.

Conservation

Beaufortia loos has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This reflects the limited scientific coverage of many narrow-range hillstream loaches in Indochina rather than confirmed abundance or confirmed rarity; the species' actual population status and the extent of its range remain incompletely documented.

The pressures facing hillstream balitorids in Southeast Asia are well understood even where individual species lack formal assessments. Fast-flowing hill streams are among the freshwater habitats most vulnerable to hydroelectric development, gravel extraction, deforestation-driven sedimentation, and agricultural runoff — all of which degrade or destroy the clean, swift, oxygenated water over bare rock that species like Beaufortia loos depend on absolutely. Because the species is traded as a wild-collected aquarium fish and occupies what is likely a restricted range, these habitat pressures are worth noting even in the absence of a formal IUCN evaluation. Buyers should source responsibly and avoid impulse purchases of a fish they cannot properly house.
