Chaetostoma aburrense was described by the Colombian naturalist Andrés Posada in 1909, in a posthumous compilation of his scientific writings ('Los peces' in Estudios científicos del doctor Andrés Posada con algunos otros escritos suyos sobre diversos temas). The original publication is not readily accessible in digitised form, and the description is characterised in the subsequent literature as based on ambiguous morphological characters. The species is nonetheless carried as valid by FishBase and the Catalogue of Life.
No formal modern redescription has been published. Some Colombian ichthyological literature notes that the identity of the type material has not been definitively reconfirmed, and it is not clear whether the type series remains available for examination. These uncertainties make C. aburrense one of the more poorly resolved nominal species in the genus.
Chaetostoma belongs to the tribe Chaetostomini within subfamily Hypostominae of Loricariidae. The genus groups the rheophilic, algae-scraping loricariids of Andean river systems, and is diverse across the Magdalena, Orinoco, and Amazon drainages of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru.

Morphology

The species shares the general Chaetostoma body plan — a strongly depressed, heavily armoured form with a wide ventral mouth and papillose lips suited for scraping algae and biofilm from submerged rocks. Rows of fine odontodes on the sides of the snout are characteristic of the genus. Habitat
The species epithet aburrensis indicates origin from the Aburrá Valley (Río Aburrá / Río Medellín) of Antioquia, Colombia — a highland valley running roughly north–south through the western Andes, drained by the Río Medellín, which flows north to join the Río Porce and ultimately the Río Cauca (a major tributary of the Río Magdalena). The presumed type locality and distribution therefore lie within the upper Magdalena River system.
No published habitat data (temperature, pH, current velocity, substrate type) are available for this species specifically. By inference from the Aburrá Valley's geography, occupied streams would be Andean piedmont or montane watercourses — typically cool, fast-flowing, and oxygen-rich, with rocky substrates consistent with Chaetostoma's rheophilic ecology. The Aburrá/Medellín river system is under intense anthropogenic pressure from the Medellín metropolitan area, and baseline pre-urban habitat conditions are not well documented for the fish fauna.
