Taxonomy & naming
Guyanancistrus brevispinis was originally described as Lasiancistrus brevispinis by Heitmans, Nijssen & Isbrücker in 1983 in Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde (volume 53, number 1, pp. 38–52, Figs. 4–7). The type locality is the Fallawatra River, at a rapid 5 kilometres southwest of Stondansie Fall, Nickerie District, Suriname; the holotype is housed at the Zoologisch Museum Amsterdam (ZMA 107740). An extensive type series was distributed to museums across Europe and the Americas.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, updated June 2026) records the current status as Valid as Guyanancistrus brevispinis (Heitmans, Nijssen & Isbrücker 1983). The species passed through several generic combinations: Lasiancistrus (1983), Pseudancistrus (Armbruster 2004, Ferraris 2007), and finally Guyanancistrus — a genus erected by Isbrücker et al. (2001) specifically for Guiana Shield species of this lineage — where it has been confirmed by multiple subsequent authors (Fisch-Muller 2003; Mol et al. 2012; Fisch-Muller et al. 2018; Borstein et al. 2022). The combination Pseudancistrus brevispinis remains current in some literature.
Three subspecies are recognised: G. b. brevispinis (nominate, Suriname west of the Marowijne), G. b. bifax (Maroni/Marowijne basin and western French Guiana), and G. b. orientalis (eastern French Guiana including the Oyapock basin). This subspecific structure was the subject of a molecular-phylogeographic study (Cardoso & Montoya-Burgos 2009, Cybium 947) that documented unexpected cryptic diversity across the Guiana Shield.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 5.5 in standard length (SL) per the PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog entry, which draws on the original description and associated material. The body is typically Pseudancistrus-lineage in proportion: broad and depressed, with a large, flattened head, wide mouth disc, and heavy armour of interlocking bony scutes across the flanks. The dorsal fin has a high first ray and the pectoral fins are broad and wing-like — the 'wing pleco' aspect of some common names.
The specific epithet brevispinis (Latin brevis = short + spina = spine, thorn) alludes to the comparatively short pectoral fin odontodes relative to related species. The interopercular region carries odontodes (bristles), which are better-developed in males. The general colouration is a dark brown to near-black background with small pale ocellations or spots scattered across head, flanks, and fins; the precise pattern varies among the three subspecies and across populations.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle but follows the standard hypostomine pattern: males develop more pronounced and elongated interopercular odontodes than females, particularly in breeding condition. Female body width tends to increase relative to males when gravid. Detailed morphometric distinctions among the subspecies are described in the original Heitmans et al. (1983) paper.
Habitat
Guyanancistrus brevispinis is recorded from the Corantijn (Courantyne) River basin to the upper Tapanahony River basin in Guyana and Suriname, and from coastal rivers of the Guianas including the Marowijne, Suriname, Nickerie, and Oyapock drainages extending into French Guiana (Catalog of Fishes; PlanetCatfish; Cardoso & Montoya-Burgos 2009; Fisch-Muller et al. 2018). This is the Guiana Shield: an ancient crystalline geological province whose rivers carve through exposed granite in a series of waterfalls, rapids, and cataract zones before reaching the coastal plain.
The Fallawatra River type locality — a rapid over bedrock in the Nickerie District interior — is characteristic. Guyana Shield rivers in this drainage are typically soft, acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–7.0), warm (75–82 °F), and very high in dissolved oxygen due to turbulence. Conductivity is low. Microhabitat is exposed rock face at and below the waterline in fast-moving reaches, where epilithic algae (periphyton) is the primary food resource. The fish are pressed flat against current-facing rock surfaces, secured by ventral sucker disc and broad pectoral fins.
Cardoso & Montoya-Burgos (2009) showed that the three subspecies correspond to catchment-scale isolation across the Guiana Shield, with the Sipaliwini River headwaters acting as a dispersal corridor between eastern and western populations — evidence that the region's complex hydrology drives fine-scale speciation in this group.
Feeding
Guyanancistrus brevispinis is an epilithic algae and periphyton grazer, adapted to scraping biofilm from hard, current-swept rock surfaces. The broad, flat sucker disc and sturdy bicuspid dentition are the functional apparatus for this mode of feeding; the fish rasps systematically across exposed substrates, consuming a matrix of algae, cyanobacteria, diatoms, bacteria, and associated detritus that coats wet rock in fast-flowing water.
No published stomach-content analyses for this species appear in the available literature. The broader Guyanancistrus / Pseudancistrus genus-group is characterised as predominantly vegetarian by the Welsfans database for related species, consistent with the epilithic grazer lifestyle. In the aquarium, a diet of algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched courgette, cucumber, and similar vegetables is appropriate as the dietary core.
Additional surface algae in the tank — grown by providing good lighting and appropriate substrates — is strongly beneficial and will be grazed continuously. Protein supplementation via whiteworm, bloodworm, or sinking protein wafers a few times weekly supports long-term condition. The fish should not be kept with particularly large, food-competitive catfish that might monopolise algae wafers.
Mating
No breeding of Guyanancistrus brevispinis has been documented in the aquarium hobby; PlanetCatfish records no breeding report, and the species has only two registered keepers in the Cat-eLog database as of 2026. Courtship behaviour is therefore unknown from direct observation and must be inferred from the Ancistrini reproductive template.
In the broader Pseudancistrus / Guyanancistrus lineage, males are expected to defend rocky territories centred on crevices or overhang sites suitable for spawning, displaying enlarged interopercular odontodes as part of intrasexual competition and intersexual courtship. A conditioned female would be larger and rounder-bodied, with a swollen genital papilla when ripe. The very small number of captive individuals means that social interactions and sex-determination in captivity have not been described.
Breeding
No successful breeding of Guyanancistrus brevispinis in captivity has been reported (PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog, 2026). The species is exceedingly rare in the hobby — only two registered keepers are listed on PlanetCatfish — and there are no published accounts from aquarium journals or dedicated catfish forums.
By analogy with the Ancistrini tribe and similar rheophilic hypostomines, cave-spawning with paternal brood care is the most probable strategy: a male defends a rocky crevice or under-rock cavity, admits a ripe female, and guards adhesive eggs deposited on the cavity ceiling or wall. In the wild, suitable spawning sites would be natural pockets in the granite-boulder substrate of Guiana Shield rapids. In captivity, ceramic caves, smooth-walled slate shelves with overhangs, or short sections of PVC pipe could substitute.
Successful breeding would likely require replicating key aspects of the natural environment: very high oxygen through strong turbulence, soft acidic water, and possibly a seasonal trigger such as a simulated dry-to-wet-season water change cycle that mimics Guiana Shield hydrology. Should an aquarist successfully breed this species, the account would represent a meaningful addition to the hobby literature.
In the aquarium
Guyanancistrus brevispinis is a rare and genuinely challenging species in the hobby — essentially a collector's fish rather than a widely available beginner or intermediate species. The handful of aquarists who have kept it report that it requires the same uncompromising fast-water conditions as other rheophilic Guiana Shield plecos: very high dissolved oxygen, active water movement (a powerhead or spray-bar providing strong circulation is not optional), clean water chemistry, and appropriate rocky shelter.
Water parameters should match the Guiana Shield origin: soft to moderately soft water (hardness under 10 dH), pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 75–82 °F, and near-zero nitrate through regular partial water changes of 25–30% weekly. Stagnant, warm, or nutrient-rich conditions are poorly tolerated and likely to cause gill and skin bacterial infections.
Aquascape with substantial smooth rockwork forming caves, crevices, and current-exposed faces. The fish will graze rock surfaces continuously if an established algal cover is present; strong overhead lighting and a nutrient-poor, clear-water system encourages algae on rock rather than in the water column. Plants are of secondary importance; hardy epilithic or epiphytic species (Anubias, Bolbitis) attached to rock or wood fit the biotope approach.
Compatible tankmates from the same biogeographic zone include small characins of Surinamese coastal rivers and other shield-endemic catfishes with similar current requirements. The Fourgassie River area in French Guiana — associated with the 'Fourgassie-Guyanancistrus' German common name — gives a clear geographic pointer for biotope construction.
Conservation
Guyanancistrus brevispinis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026 (status Not Evaluated). The species is endemic to a relatively restricted arc of Guiana Shield rivers: primarily the Corantijn–Tapanahony drainage in Guyana and Suriname, and coastal rivers of French Guiana from the Maroni eastward to the Oyapock. The three recognised subspecies add a layer of biogeographic structure that could be relevant to conservation prioritisation if assessments are undertaken.
The Guiana Shield is among the least-degraded large biodiversity regions in South America, but specific threats are accumulating. Gold mining — both large-scale open-cast operations and artisanal alluvial mining (orpaillage) — is the dominant environmental pressure on rivers in Suriname and French Guiana, introducing mercury contamination, physical disturbance of riverbeds, and sediment plumes that smother the rock biofilm on which this species depends. Deforestation along river banks increases siltation and water temperature. In French Guiana, the Oyapock basin is subject to cross-border mining pressure from Brazil.
Captive breeding is not established. The extremely small captive population (two registered keepers globally on PlanetCatfish) means the species effectively has no captive insurance population. Given its restricted range, subspecific structure, and dependence on clean fast-water habitat, a formal IUCN assessment would be valuable.
