An elegant, elongated loricariid from the coastal drainages of south-eastern Brazil, Hemipsilichthys gobio occupies the fast-flowing, boulder-strewn headwaters of the Paraíba do Sul basin — a catchment under growing pressure from urbanisation and water diversion. Placed in its own subfamily Delturinae by Reis, Pereira and Armbruster in 2006, the species has an unusual body form and ecology that set it apart from most familiar aquarium plecos.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemipsilichthys gobio was originally described as Xenomystus gobio by Christian Frederik Lütken in 1874, based on a holotype from the Rio Parahyba (= Paraíba do Sul), Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, deposited at the Zoological Museum of the University of Copenhagen (ZMUC 76). The type locality was subsequently restricted by Pereira et al. (2000). The combination Hemipsilichthys gobio follows the transfer by Eigenmann and Eigenmann (1889:46), where the genus Hemipsilichthys was erected to accommodate this and related species.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; updated June 2026) recognises Hemipsilichthys gobio (Lütken, 1874) as the valid name. A synonym of note is Upsilodus victori Miranda Ribeiro 1924, which was long maintained as a valid species but was placed in the synonymy of H. gobio by Pereira & Reis (2002) and confirmed by Weber in Reis et al. (2003) and by Ferraris (2007).

The subfamily Delturinae was formally erected by Reis, Pereira & Armbruster (2006) in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society (147: 277–299) to accommodate Hemipsilichthys and the closely related Delturus, based on a suite of morphological synapomorphies including details of the snout, pectoral girdle, and squamation. Delturinae is one of the more recently established subfamilies within Loricariidae and is supported by both morphological and molecular phylogenetic evidence. The species carries no L-number as it is not regularly traded in the ornamental fish industry.

Morphology

Hemipsilichthys gobio is a moderately large loricariid, reaching up to 6 in standard length (SL) according to the revision by Pereira & Reis (2002). The body is covered in the typical bony scute armour of loricariids; the dorsal scute series on each side do not meet along the middorsal line between the end of the dorsal-fin base and the adipose fin — a diagnostic feature noted in FishBase (Ref. 42856). The body profile is distinctly elongated, giving the fish a somewhat attenuated, goby-like silhouette from which the epithet gobio is derived.

Meristics: 7 dorsal soft rays; 6 anal soft rays. The orbital diameter is proportionally large relative to head length, ranging 12.0–14.7% HL. Both lobes of the bicuspidate teeth are approximately equal in size, distinguishing H. gobio from H. papillatus. The ventral mouth is subterminal and adapted for scraping algae and biofilm from hard substrates, consistent with the species' rheophilic ecology.

Coloration in life and preservation is typically mottled brown or grey-brown against a paler ground, a cryptic pattern that matches weathered granite and quartzite substrate. Females have not been described in detail separately from males in published sources accessible for this account; sexual dimorphism in this species remains poorly characterised in the literature.

Habitat

Hemipsilichthys gobio is known exclusively from the Paraíba do Sul River basin, a coastal Atlantic drainage of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states in south-eastern Brazil. FishBase (Ref. 57859) summarises the habitat as small rivers with clear water, moderate to strong current, and a substrate of rocks, loose stones, and gravel — a classic rheophilic loricariid environment.

The Paraíba do Sul basin is geologically complex, cutting through the Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar ranges before flowing to the Atlantic. Headwater streams are typically clear, cold, and well-oxygenated, with temperatures probably in the range of 64–75 °F depending on altitude and season; water tends to be soft and slightly acidic to neutral, reflecting the granitic and gneissic geology of the watershed. Catchment relief is pronounced, and the species inhabits the faster, boulder-scattered stretches rather than slow lowland reaches.

Field occurrence records from de Brito & Buckup (2019) confirm the species from the upper Piraí drainage, a sub-basin transposed by engineering works into the Paraíba do Sul system. This extends the known range slightly and suggests the species can utilise streams with altered hydrology, though the full extent of any adaptation is unknown.

Feeding

Like most small to medium-sized loricariids occupying rocky, fast-water habitats, Hemipsilichthys gobio is understood to be primarily an algal scraper and aufwuchs grazer, using its ventral mouth and bicuspidate teeth to rasp diatoms, filamentous algae, and periphyton from rock surfaces. No detailed stomach-content studies specific to this species have been published in sources reviewed for this account; the inference is drawn from its morphological similarity to other rheophilic loricariids in the subfamily Delturinae and related Hypoptopomatinae, where biofilm and attached algae dominate the diet.

The equal-lobed teeth distinguish H. gobio from wood-eating specialists such as Panaque and Panaqolus, suggesting it relies less on cellulose-rich substrates. In an aquarium context, feeds accepted by closely related taxa — algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched courgette, cucumber, and fine sinking pellets — are likely appropriate. Live or lightly scaled aufwuchs growth on mature rocks or driftwood in the aquarium would closely approximate wild feeding conditions.

Mating

No published account of courtship or mating behaviour in Hemipsilichthys gobio has been located in the primary literature reviewed for this article. The reproductive biology of the Delturinae more broadly is poorly documented relative to the better-studied Hypostominae and Loricariinae. Based on general loricariid biology and the cave-dwelling tendencies of many similarly sized rheophilic plecos, male territoriality around suitable crevices or cavities in rocky substrate is likely, and males may develop more prominent odontodes during the breeding season.

Given the species' IUCN Near Threatened status and restricted range, caution should be exercised in extrapolating from better-known relatives. Any reader who successfully breeds this species in captivity is encouraged to document the behaviour and submit an account to PlanetCatfish or a relevant herpetological or ichthyological journal, as the data would be genuinely valuable.

Breeding

No confirmed captive breeding records for Hemipsilichthys gobio have been published in the sources reviewed. The closely related genus Delturus and, by inference from phylogenetic proximity, Hemipsilichthys are expected to conform to the ancestral loricariid breeding strategy of adhesive egg deposition in a sheltered cavity with some form of paternal guarding, but this has not been verified for H. gobio specifically.

In wild populations, breeding is likely tied to the seasonal hydrology of the Paraíba do Sul basin, with spawning potentially occurring in the austral spring-summer (October–February) when water temperatures rise and river levels fluctuate. The conservation concern for this species (Near Threatened, IUCN 2022) means that wild population dynamics are relevant: any impact on reproductive success — from water diversion, channelisation, or temperature change — could affect recovery capacity. Without captive breeding data, wild-collected individuals remain the sole source for the hobby, reinforcing the importance of responsible collection.

In the aquarium

Hemipsilichthys gobio is a rarely encountered species in the trade, not assigned an L-number and not regularly exported. When available, it represents a challenging but rewarding subject for the experienced loricariid keeper. Its natural habitat — fast, clear, cool headwater streams with rock substrate and high dissolved oxygen — must be closely approximated in captivity.

A single specimen requires a tank of at least 25 US gal with powerful filtration, significant water movement, and a substrate of smooth cobbles and flat rocks providing both territories and feeding surface. Temperature should be maintained in the range of 64–75 °F; warmer conditions risk chronic stress and immune suppression. Water should be soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.5, with nitrates kept low through frequent partial water changes of 30% or more per week.

Because this species is Near Threatened and its natural population is restricted to a single river basin already under significant anthropogenic pressure, hobbyists should purchase only tank-raised specimens if they become available, and should be cautious of wild-caught imports from unauthorised sources. The species is not suitable for a general community tank with warm-water tropicals; a dedicated Mata Atlântica biotope setup with cool-water, fast-water fish from the same drainage (small Characidae, Heptapteridae) would be more appropriate.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hemipsilichthys gobio as Near Threatened in 2022 (criterion B1b(iii)), reflecting a range restricted to the Paraíba do Sul River basin in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states. The Catalog of Fishes (June 2026) cross-references this as a 2023 assessment. The Near Threatened status is driven by ongoing habitat degradation, including water abstraction for urban and agricultural use, channelisation of tributaries, and the effects of deforestation on stream hydrology and water quality.

The Paraíba do Sul basin is one of the most heavily urbanised and industrialised river systems in Brazil, supplying water to metropolitan São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Several major dams have altered flow regimes, and headwater streams where H. gobio lives are subject to direct habitat loss through watershed clearing. The species has no formal protection under Brazilian legislation beyond general freshwater fish regulations; no captive breeding programme is known. Given the restricted distribution and ongoing catchment degradation, an upgrade to Vulnerable cannot be ruled out in future assessments if trends continue.
