One of the rarest catfishes on Earth, Delturus parahybae is known from fewer than ten museum specimens collected across more than 160 years. A specialised rheophile of the Paraíba do Sul basin in south-eastern Brazil, it inhabits fast-water rocky runs in one of the most industrialised river systems on the continent — a fact that makes its survival deeply uncertain.

Taxonomy & naming

Delturus parahybae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Rosa Smith Eigenmann in 1889 in their 'Preliminary notes on South American Nematognathi, II', published in the Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences (Series 2, volume 2, page 45). The type locality is the Rio Parahyba do Sul (Paraíba do Sul) between Barra do Piraí and Três Rios, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil; lectotype MCZ 7726, lectotype designated by Reis et al. (2006). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid name Delturus parahybae Eigenmann & Eigenmann 1889, without synonyms.

The genus Delturus is the nominal genus of the subfamily Delturinae, formally erected by Reis, Pereira & Armbruster (2006, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 147: 277–299), which demonstrated that Delturus and Hemipsilichthys together form the sister group to all other loricariids except Lithogenes — making Delturinae the most phylogenetically basal of the recognised subfamilies within the family. Before 2006, these genera were typically placed, somewhat incertae sedis, within a broadly defined Hypostominae. The subfamily is restricted entirely to coastal drainages of the south-eastern Brazilian Shield, a distribution consistent with either ancient isolation in this region or an origin there.

Within Delturus, the 2006 revision recognised five species: D. parahybae, D. angulicauda, D. carinotus, D. brevis (new at that time), and a then-undescribed species. D. parahybae is distinguished from congeners by black rounded spots on the head and dorsum, 26–28 lateral dermal plates in the lateral median series, a ventrally flattened caudal peduncle, and an entirely naked abdomen.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 8.5 in standard length (SL), making D. parahybae the largest species of its genus in the literature. The body is encased in the overlapping bony scutes characteristic of all loricariids. Ground colour appears dark brownish-grey, the head and dorsal surface marked with black rounded spots — a pattern that distinguishes this species from its congeners, which lack or show different spotting arrangements.

The caudal peduncle is notably flattened ventrally, a morphological feature consistent with a strongly rheophilic life on fast-water rocky substrates. The abdomen is entirely naked — unplated — which is a key diagnostic character shared by the Delturinae and used in the 2006 subfamily revision. An adipose fin is present. Fin formula given in the original description: D i+9, A i+5, P1 i+6, P2 i+5, C i+14+i. The mandibular ramus is approximately 1.3 times the interorbital width.

Sexual dimorphism follows the general loricariid pattern for rheophilic genera: adult males develop bristle-like hypertrophied odontodes along the lateral borders of the head and on the first thickened ray of the pectoral fin. These odontodes are absent or much reduced in females and juveniles. Given the extreme rarity of specimens, morphometric data are limited almost entirely to the type series and the few subsequently collected individuals.

Habitat

Delturus parahybae is restricted to the Paraíba do Sul River basin in south-eastern Brazil, with confirmed records from just two localities: the main channel of the Paraíba do Sul River between Três Rios and Barra do Piraí (Rio de Janeiro state), and the Pomba River near Laranjal (Minas Gerais state). All known specimens were collected from fast-water rocky habitats.

The Pomba River specimen (MCP 27296, collected 1997) was taken at rapids where the river is approximately 98 ft wide and 2–7 ft deep, with a rocky substrate partially covered by aquatic vegetation of the family Podostemaceae (riverweeds). Riffles and pools alternate in this stretch. An earlier specimen from the Rio Pomba (MCP 31467) was also collected at night in the main river channel on a rocky bottom in very strong current (FishBase, citing Reis et al. 2003). This microhabitat preference — fast water, rocky substrate, Podostemaceae association — mirrors that of the congeneric D. carinotus and D. angulicauda in the Doce and Mucuri river basins.

The Paraíba do Sul basin drains one of Brazil's most urbanised and industrialised regions. Water quality parameters at the known collection sites have not been published in detail, but the river system as a whole is characterised as warm subtropical water with highly degraded reaches near major urban centres.

Feeding

No direct dietary data have been published for Delturus parahybae, owing to the extreme scarcity of specimens. However, the morphology of the genus — a ventral suctorial mouth, bony armour, and association with rocky fast-water substrates — is consistent with a periphyton-scraping and aufwuchs-grazing diet typical of rheophilic loricariids generally.

Congeners and closely related genera in the Delturinae (notably Hemipsilichthys) are understood to graze biofilm, periphyton, and fine organic detritus from rock surfaces and aquatic plants in rapids habitats. The association of D. parahybae with Podostemaceae stands in the Pomba River is noteworthy: these submerged flowering plants in tropical rapids are known to support dense biofilm communities and attract a suite of specialist loricariid grazers. By analogy with its better-studied congeners and with ecological communities at comparable Podostemaceae rapids sites in other Brazilian river systems, D. parahybae almost certainly feeds primarily on algae, diatoms, and associated organic matter scraped from hard substrates.

In practical terms, the species is not maintained in captivity to any documented degree, so aquarium feeding observations do not exist.

Mating

Nothing is known about reproductive behaviour in Delturus parahybae in the wild or in captivity. No mating observations have been published.

The presence of hypertrophied odontodes on the heads and pectoral fins of adult males — documented in the original description and confirmed in the 2006 revisional paper — is consistent with the pattern seen across many rheophilic loricariid genera. In other genera, such odontodes serve multiple functions: intrasexual competition (males use them in lateral contact bouts for territory or spawning sites) and intersexual signalling. The degree of odontode development in D. parahybae males appears comparable to that of its congeners.

Given the species' restriction to fast-water rocky habitats, spawning almost certainly takes place in sheltered microhabitats within rapids — crevices under boulders, interstices between rocks, or among Podostemaceae root masses — as is typical for loricariids in similar environments. These are reasonable inferences, not confirmed observations, and are presented here only as ecological context grounded in the broader loricariid literature.

Breeding

No breeding data exist for Delturus parahybae. The species has never been maintained or reproduced in captivity as far as is documented in the scientific or hobbyist literature. PlanetCatfish carries no breeding report for this species.

By comparison with related rheophilic loricariids — particularly genera such as Hemipsilichthys, the sister genus to Delturus — cave spawning with male guarding of eggs is the expected reproductive mode. In many rheophilic species, males select and defend sheltered sites beneath rocks or in rocky crevices where eggs are deposited and aerated by the male's fin-fanning. Clutch size and incubation duration are entirely unknown for D. parahybae.

The pressing conservation status of the species means that captive-breeding programmes would be of significant conservation value, but no such programme is known to be in operation. The Paraíba do Sul basin is heavily impacted, and no wild-caught specimens suitable for captive breeding have been reported in recent decades.

In the aquarium

Delturus parahybae is not available in the aquarium trade and has never been maintained in captivity to any documented degree. It is not imported, bred in captivity, or assigned an L-number or LDA-number. PlanetCatfish records no wish-list entries and no spotters for this species.

Were it ever to become available — an eventuality that would only arise from a serious captive conservation programme — the ecological data from the wild suggest that it would require fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water, a rocky substrate, and a diet of biofilm, algae wafers, and vegetable matter. The Paraíba do Sul basin is a warm subtropical system: temperatures are variable seasonally but typically warm (likely 64–79 °F in the fish's known range), and the water at the rapids sites is soft and well-oxygenated. No water chemistry parameters specific to collection sites have been published.

This entry is provided for completeness as a scientific record of the species. We do not encourage collection from wild populations given the species' Critically Endangered status and the extreme rarity of known individuals.

Conservation

Delturus parahybae is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List (criterion B2ab(iii)), assessed 7 November 2018. It is among the most conservation-critical loricariids known: fewer than ten specimens have been collected across the entire recorded history of the species, and the most recent confirmed collection was a single individual from the Pomba River in 1997. Intensive subsequent sampling in the basin failed to relocate the species despite collecting over 35,000 fish at the type locality and surrounding areas (Pompeu & Vieira 2003).

The Paraíba do Sul watershed is one of the most industrialised and urbanised river systems in Brazil. Fourteen hydropower plants were in operation in the basin as of 1999, with more planned at that time, and ongoing construction since has further modified the river. Reservoirs eliminate or fragment the lotic (fast-water) habitats upon which this species depends. Industrial and domestic effluents degrade water quality across large sections of the basin. Loss of riparian vegetation increases sedimentation, smothering the rocky substrates and Podostemaceae communities that define the species' known microhabitat.

Conservation recommendations in the literature (Pompeu & Vieira 2003, Reis et al. 2006) call for dedicated surveys to re-assess the current distribution and abundance of D. parahybae, environmental restoration programmes to improve water quality and restore lotic flow in the basin, and formal listing on Brazil's national threatened species lists. Whether any viable population persists remains unknown.
