Taxonomy & naming
Panaqolus changae was formally described by Chockley and Armbruster in 2002, published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 13, number 1, page 83). The holotype (MUSM 17107) was collected from the Río Itaya, a tributary of the upper Amazon drainage lying 7 mi south-southwest of the city of Iquitos, Loreto, Peru (3°49′47.6″S, 73°18′2.9″W). Paratypes are deposited in the AUM, INHS, MUSM, and SIU collections.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, updated June 2026) recognises the valid combination Panaqolus changae (Chockley & Armbruster 2002). The species was originally placed in Panaque (Fisch-Muller in Reis et al. 2003), but subsequent work by Ferraris (2007) and Fisch-Muller et al. (2012) transferred it to Panaqolus, reflecting the consensus that the smaller wood-eating forms constitute a separate genus within tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster 2004).
In the ornamental trade the species carries the DATZ designation L226 — the 'Iquitos Tiger Pleco' — and less commonly appears under the informal German name Tigerkopf-Panaque. No LDA code has been assigned. The epithet changae honours Dr. Fonchii Chang, a Peruvian ichthyologist who assisted the authors during fieldwork.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 3.5 in standard length, making P. changae one of the more compact species in Panaqolus. The body plan follows the loricariid armoured blueprint: overlapping bony scutes from head to caudal peduncle, a broad sucker-like mouth positioned ventrally, and a prominent spine at the leading edge of each paired fin. The dorsal fin is high and triangular; the caudal fin is slightly forked.
The species is immediately recognisable by its bold pattern of warm orange to amber transverse bands and blotches contrasting sharply against a dark brown to black ground colour — a livery responsible for the 'tiger' and 'tigerkopf' (tiger-head) vernacular names. The banding typically runs from the head posteriorly across the body and fins, though pattern intensity can vary with stress; a pale, washed-out appearance in newly imported individuals is common and usually reverses within weeks.
The teeth are narrow and multi-cusped, consistent with the Panaqolus condition; they differ from the wider spatulate (spoon-shaped) teeth of the large-bodied genus Panaque. Sexing follows standard Panaqolus conventions: breeding males develop elongated interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) and scattered odontodes along the dorsum; the male genital papilla is small and pointed, while a conditioned female's papilla is large, rounded, and swollen. Gravid females also appear noticeably broader between the pectoral and pelvic girdles when seen from above.
Habitat
The Catalog of Fishes records P. changae from the Itaya and Momón river basins, both tributaries of the upper Amazon near Iquitos, with PlanetCatfish also noting records from the Nanay system. All three rivers are warm-water, blackwater-influenced tributaries draining lowland terra-firme forest in Loreto Department, Peru. The region sits at roughly 328 ft elevation, producing stable tropical temperatures; the Nanay in particular is renowned for its soft, acidic, tannin-stained water.
PlanetCatfish records water parameters of pH 5.0–7.0 and temperature 77–84 °F for the species, consistent with the soft, slightly to moderately acidic conditions typical of upper Amazonian forest streams. Microhabitat is strongly associated with submerged wood accumulations — fallen tree trunks, root tangles, and log-jams in areas with some current — where the fish rasp biofilm and ingest wood fibres.
The endemism to a small cluster of Loreto tributaries (Peru only, per CoF) gives this species a restricted range by Panaqolus standards, a factor that may matter for conservation assessments as the Iquitos region faces ongoing habitat pressure.
Feeding
Panaqolus changae is a genuine xylophage: wood is not optional furnishing but a dietary staple. The fish uses its narrow, multi-cusped teeth to rasp submerged wood surfaces, ingesting a mixture of wood fibres, cellulose, and the biofilm of bacteria, fungi, and fine detritus that colonises waterlogged timber. As with other Panaqolus species, microbial communities in the gut are thought to assist in breaking down hemicellulose fractions; the fish produces conspicuous pale, mucus-encased faecal wood-fibre strings.
In captivity, the requirement is identical to that of its relatives: multiple pieces of quality hardwood driftwood (mopani, Malaysian driftwood, natural branches of hardwood species) must be available at all times. Without wood, the fish will graze the glass and silicone, and may suffer digestive and immune problems. Supplementary foods should skew firmly vegetarian: spirulina wafers, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber discs, sweet potato, and peas are all accepted readily. Minimal protein supplementation from bloodworm or similar can be offered occasionally; a heavy protein diet is counterproductive and may cause fatty degeneration.
Mating
Courtship behaviour in P. changae follows the general Panaqolus pattern, as documented in PlanetCatfish breeding reports and the CotM profile (April 2011). Males become territorial as conditioning advances, patrolling and defending a preferred cave site — typically a hollow length of driftwood or a tight ceramic spawning tube. Rival males engage in interopercular-odontode displays and occasional short chasing bouts; these seldom escalate to serious injury if adequate cave sites are distributed around the tank.
A ready female is visibly broader across the mid-body, and her papilla becomes conspicuously swollen. Males actively coax or shepherd the female into the selected cavity, manoeuvring to direct her toward the spawning site. In community tanks with other small loricariids, maintaining only one adult male per cave cluster, or using a species tank, improves the likelihood of successful courtship. PlanetCatfish records four breeding reports for this species, confirming reproducibility in captivity with appropriate conditioning.
Breeding
Panaqolus changae spawns in caves and the male alone provides brood care — the standard loricariid model. Adhesive amber-to-yellow eggs are deposited on the inner walls of the selected cavity and the male fans them continuously with his pectoral fins, maintaining oxygen flow and removing any fungused eggs before they can spread infection. PlanetCatfish photographic series document the developmental timeline: eggs are roughly 0.5 in diameter; fry emerge after approximately 5–7 days at typical tank temperatures of 79–82 °F, looking like miniature striped adults.
Development is rapid: PlanetCatfish images show one-day-old fry still attached by yolk sac, six-day-old free-swimming fry beginning to rasp wood, seventeen-day-old juveniles with pattern fully established, and three-month-old fish resembling small adults. The male continues to guard until fry disperse from the cave, typically within 2–3 weeks. Clutch size is modest — comparable to Panaqolus maccus. Conditioning adults with a varied diet, regular 25–30% water changes, and mild temperature cycling (73–82 °F range) is the standard approach for stimulating spawning.
In the aquarium
At 3.5 in SL, P. changae is one of the genuinely small plecos — a meaningful distinction in a group where many species advertised as small eventually reach 12–19.5 in. A single specimen is comfortable in a 60-litre tank with wood furnishings; a small group of three to four requires at least 25–30 US gal with multiple cave sites and wood tangles to allow establishment of non-overlapping territories.
Water parameters should reflect the species' Loreto origin: soft to moderately hard (under 10–12 °dH), slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–7.0), and warm (77–84 °F). Filtration should maintain efficient turnover; like all wood-rasping loricariids, P. changae produces significant waste, and nitrate accumulation must be managed with regular water changes. Several pieces of driftwood are non-negotiable: provide at minimum two to three pieces of varying density, including a softer decaying piece that can be rasped more easily.
The tiger pattern makes this species a focal point in any community aquarium. Compatible tankmates include small tetras (cardinal, rummy-nose, neon), pencilfish, dwarf cichlids (Apistogramma spp.), and Corydoras — all occupants of broadly similar Amazonian biotope conditions. Avoid large, aggressive cichlids that will stress or physically damage the fish. Two males in a small tank will establish territories around wood structures; fatalities are rare, but chronic stress and fin damage can occur if territory allocation fails.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Panaqolus changae as Least Concern, last evaluated in 2014 (PlanetCatfish). The species has a restricted distribution — the Itaya, Momón, and Nanay river basins in Loreto, Peru — and does not appear on the Catalog of Fishes as occurring outside Peru. This limited range is a potential vulnerability, though the IUCN assessment did not find sufficient evidence of population decline to warrant a threatened category at the time of evaluation.
The Iquitos region, while still containing substantial intact forest, faces growing pressure from hydrocarbon extraction, agricultural expansion, and artisanal gold mining, all of which can alter the hydrology and wood dynamics of lowland forest streams. The ornamental trade collects this species in moderate numbers. Captive breeding is achievable and documented, and tank-bred specimens reduce dependence on wild collection, though commercially produced individuals are uncommon. The IUCN assessment should be considered for re-evaluation given the species' restricted Peruvian range and ongoing regional habitat modification.
