Panaqolus sp. L206 stays small, about 3 in total length according to the L-Wels registry, and comes from the Río Ucayali drainage of Peru. It is a wood-eating pleco known by its code and by one German trade name, Ucayali-Tigerharnischwels. No scientific name has been published for it.

What's in the name

Panaqolus
  • PanaqueAmerican Spanish (Venezuelan indigenous) — local common name for wood-eating catfishes, applied to the parent genus
  • -olusLatin — diminutive suffix, denoting smaller stature than Panaque
L206
  • L206hobby code (L-number) — a number from the L-number system that the German magazine DATZ began in 1988 for imported suckermouth catfishes not yet identified to species; it stands in for a species epithet until the fish is formally described

Taxonomy & naming

The registry lists the fish as Panaqolus sp. "L 206" / "LDA 26", which makes LDA026 a second hobby code for the same fish, while PlanetCatfish names it Panaqolus sp. (L206). The L-number is a trade code from the system DATZ started in 1988 for imported loricariids awaiting identification, and an undescribed form has no authority and no type specimens. The only trade name on record is the German Ucayali-Tigerharnischwels, "Ucayali tiger armoured catfish". The registry's bibliography includes the Welsatlas 2 (2005), the Miniatlas L-Welse (2005), Erwin Schraml's 2004 piece on old and new LDA numbers in Das Aquarium, and DATZ, June 2019.

Morphology

The registry puts the size at about 3 in total length (not standard length). Diagnostic characters are not recorded. For comparison the registry points to Panaqolus sp. L459 and Panaqolus sp. "Pucallpa" as similar catfishes. As in other loricariids, the skin is armoured with bony plates bearing odontodes.

Habitat

Recorded localities are the Río San Alejandro and the Río Ucayali drainage near Pucallpa and Tournavista, in the Huánuco region of Peru. The registry traces the river system from the Río Aguaytía to the Río Ucayali and on to the Amazon, and describes the water as clearwater. Substrate is not recorded. Catfishes listed as found together with it are Panaqolus albivermis (L204), Panaqolus cf. albomaculatus "LDA 31" and Panaqolus sp. "Rio San Alejandro".

Feeding

L206 falls in the registry's diet class of mainly wood-eater (Holzfresser), so driftwood belongs in the tank as food and not only as decoration. Plant matter is flagged as eaten too. No further feeding notes are on record, so aquarium feeding follows the class: plant-based sinking foods and vegetables alongside the wood. Nothing is claimed about what wild fish eat.

Mating

Sexing, in the registry, is given at genus level: Panaqolus males show stronger odontode growth and a slimmer waist. Cave spawning, with the male guarding eggs and larvae, is typical of the genus, and the registry's note on caves says only that this form follows the standard. Nothing about courtship specific to L206 is recorded.

Breeding

Captive breeding has been reported, with the registry citing "WA 2" as the source, though it does not say what "WA 2" refers to. No clutch size is recorded, and nothing is on record about the spawning itself, its timing or the rearing of fry.

In the aquarium

The registry's keeping range is 77–84 °F and pH 6–8, with a recommended tank length of 23.5 in; these numbers are aquarium guidance, not field measurements. Small groups are recommended, though a single fish is also possible. Expect the usual genus needs: clean, well-oxygenated water with some current, caves or crevices and wood, and territorial behaviour between plecos.

Conservation

L206 is Not Evaluated on the IUCN Red List, because an undescribed form cannot be assessed until it has a name. Collection for the trade and river engineering affect some L-number habitats in general, but the registry has no population, threat or protection information for this form, and nothing specific is on record for the Río Ucayali localities.
