Taxonomy & naming
This species was originally described by Alípio de Miranda Ribeiro in 1951 as Hemipsilichthys cerosus. The genus Hemipsilichthys had long served as a catch-all for small, rheophilic loricariids from eastern Brazilian coastal rivers, but the group's boundaries were poorly defined and its monophyly was never robustly demonstrated.
In 2002, Pereira and Reis resurrected the genus Pareiorhaphis and transferred a number of Hemipsilichthys species — including H. cerosus — into it, establishing the current valid combination Pareiorhaphis cerosa (Miranda Ribeiro, 1951). The parenthetical authority reflects the transfer from the original genus. Hemipsilichthys cerosus is accordingly treated as a junior synonym of the current name. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts Pareiorhaphis cerosa as the valid name.
Pareiorhaphis is characterised by a suite of cranial, pectoral-girdle, and lateral-line canal characters that distinguish it from superficially similar neoplecostomine genera. Among its congeners, P. cerosa is notable for its comparatively large adult size — most Pareiorhaphis reach 1.6–2.8 in SL, making P. cerosa at 4.3 in SL an outlier toward the upper end.
The precise type locality reported in Miranda Ribeiro's original 1951 description is given only broadly as eastern coastal drainages of Brazil; exact coordinates and a precise collection locality were not published with the original description.
This fish was long listed as Pareiorhaphis cerosus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now treats that name as a synonym of Pareiorhaphis cerosa, the valid name followed here.
Morphology
Pareiorhaphis cerosa reaches 4.3 in standard length, making it one of the larger species in the genus. The body form is that of a typical neoplecostomine loricariid: strongly dorsoventrally compressed, with keeled scutes covering the dorsal and lateral surfaces and a soft, unplated ventral surface adapted for adhesion to hard substrate.
Morphometric data from the Pereira and Reis (2002) resurrection paper note a caudal peduncle depth of 9.4–11.7% SL — proportionally deeper than in the related P. parmula (8.2–9.2% SL), a character useful in separating the two species. Head length is 27.6–27.8% SL. Teeth are bicuspid with minute lateral cusps, suited to scraping periphyton from hard surfaces.
As in other Pareiorhaphis, males develop odontodes on the pectoral-fin spines and cheeks — the genus-defining hypertrophy of these structures in mature males is a reliable dimorphic marker across the group. Females lack the elaborated pectoral odontodes and are likely broader-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Pareiorhaphis cerosa is recorded from eastern coastal drainages of Brazil. The FishBase distribution entry notes the eastern Brazilian coastal basin with a degree of geographic uncertainty, and no georeferenced occurrence records with precise stream-level data appear in the available sources.
Based on the habitat preferences of congeners and the typical ecology of Atlantic Forest coastal stream loricariids, P. cerosa would be expected to occupy fast-flowing, rocky, well-oxygenated streams and small rivers in forested catchments. Atlantic Forest coastal rivers in eastern Brazil are typically clear to slightly tea-coloured, acidic to circumneutral, soft, and subject to seasonal fluctuation in flow and temperature. No field water-chemistry data are available specifically for this species.
Feeding
No feeding studies specific to P. cerosa have been published. Its morphology — ventral adhesive mouth, bicuspid teeth, rheophilic body plan — is consistent with a diet dominated by periphyton, epilithic biofilm, and fine detrital matter scraped from submerged rock surfaces.
At its larger adult size (up to 4.3 in SL), P. cerosa would likely be capable of consuming greater quantities of algal biomass per feeding bout than smaller congeners. In captivity, analogous loricariids from similar ecological contexts accept sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables, though P. cerosa itself is not known from the trade.
Mating
No observations of mating behaviour in P. cerosa have been published. The genus-level pattern of male pectoral-fin odontode elaboration is consistent with male-male competition for territory or nest sites, as documented in other loricariid groups where similar secondary sexual characters appear. The large adult size of this species relative to congeners may influence territory size and the nature of male interactions, but this is inference from the genus pattern rather than species-specific observation.
Breeding
The breeding biology of P. cerosa is undescribed in the scientific literature. No captive breeding records appear to exist. Based on the general pattern for rheophilic neoplecostomine loricariids, spawning in rock crevices or under flat stones in fast current, with male attendance of the eggs, would be the expected strategy — but this remains unconfirmed for this taxon specifically.
In the aquarium
Pareiorhaphis cerosa is not known to the ornamental trade. No import records, hobbyist accounts, or aquarium literature for this species have been identified. The genus as a whole is rarely encountered outside of Brazil, and P. cerosa in particular — from poorly documented eastern coastal drainages with limited collecting access — appears to be entirely absent from the hobby.
Its relatively large adult size for the genus (up to 4.3 in SL) means it would require more space than the smallest Pareiorhaphis, but it would still be manageable by typical loricariid standards. Water conditions modelled on Atlantic Forest coastal streams — soft, slightly acidic to neutral, cool to warm seasonally, fast current, rocky substrate — would be the appropriate starting point if specimens ever became available.
Conservation
Pareiorhaphis cerosa has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its distribution is reported from eastern Brazilian coastal drainages, a region where the Atlantic Forest has suffered among the most severe deforestation rates in the world, with well under 20% of original forest cover remaining.
Coastal Atlantic Forest river systems are under ongoing pressure from urban expansion, agriculture, sedimentation, and water abstraction. The degree to which P. cerosa is widespread or narrowly restricted within its coastal basin range is not known from the available literature — the original type locality is imprecisely documented, and no recent surveys specifically targeting this species have been published. A formal IUCN assessment would require clarification of its range and an evaluation of habitat condition within it.
