Taxonomy & naming
Pareiorhaphis bahiana was originally described by William A. Gosline in 1947, initially placed in the genus Hemipsilichthys (or related coastal-stream loricariid genera as understood at the time). Subsequent revisionary work on the Neoplecostominae and on the cheek-bristle plecos transferred the species to Pareiorhaphis, the genus now used for it in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). The species epithet bahianus refers to the Brazilian state of Bahia, where the type material was collected.
The genus Pareiorhaphis Miranda Ribeiro, 1918 has had a complex nomenclatural history, having long been confused or synonymised with Hemipsilichthys and Pareiorhina before being re-established and substantially expanded through the work of Roberto Reis, Edson Pereira, and colleagues in a series of taxonomic papers in the 2000s and 2010s. Pareiorhaphis is now recognised as one of the more species-rich genera of the subfamily Neoplecostominae, with many of its species being narrow-range endemics of southeastern and eastern Brazilian coastal river systems.
Neoplecostominae is one of the principal subfamilies of Loricariidae and is characterised by small, often hill-stream-adapted catfishes of the Atlantic Forest and adjacent uplands. Within this group Pareiorhaphis is distinguished by the well-developed hypertrophied odontodes (bristle-like structures) that males develop along the head margins and snout, a feature that has given the genus its informal hobbyist name of 'bristlemouth' or 'bristle-cheek' plecos.
This fish was long listed as Pareiorhaphis bahianus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Pareiorhaphis, and the current combination Pareiorhaphis bahiana is followed here.
Morphology
Pareiorhaphis bahiana is a small loricariid, with adults reaching roughly 3.1–3.9 in in standard length, consistent with the generally modest size of the genus. The body is depressed and streamlined in the manner typical of rheophilic (current-loving) loricariids, with a broad, flattened head and a ventrally positioned suckermouth that allows the fish to adhere to rocks in flowing water. The body is armoured with the overlapping bony plates characteristic of the family, though the ventral surface is largely naked.
Ground colouration is generally brown to greyish-brown, often mottled or marbled with darker blotches that provide camouflage against the stony, algae-covered substrates of its habitat. Fins may carry faint banding or spotting. As in other Neoplecostominae, the colour pattern is cryptic rather than ornamental, in keeping with the species' lack of any significant presence in the ornamental trade.
The most diagnostic feature of the genus, and the basis for distinguishing Pareiorhaphis from related genera, is the development in mature males of conspicuous hypertrophied odontodes along the lateral margins of the head and on the snout. These bristle-like odontodes, together with details of the dentition, fin-ray counts, and plate arrangement, are used by ichthyologists to separate the many similar species within the genus. Precise meristic and morphometric values for P. bahiana are reported in the primary taxonomic literature.
Habitat
Pareiorhaphis bahiana is endemic to coastal river drainages of the state of Bahia in eastern Brazil, within the Atlantic Forest biome. Like other members of its genus, it is a rheophilic inhabitant of clear, well-oxygenated streams and small rivers, favouring stretches with moderate to fast current and rocky or gravelly bottoms. These are the riffle and run habitats where loricariids of this body form thrive, clinging to stable stones and submerged wood.
The waters of its range are typically soft to moderately mineralised, slightly acidic to near-neutral, and relatively cool by tropical standards owing to flow, shade, and elevation in the forested uplands. Submerged rocks coated in periphyton (the algal and microbial film) provide both the foraging surface and the refuge that this species depends upon. Riparian forest cover contributes leaf litter, shade, and bank stability that maintain water clarity and temperature.
The Atlantic Forest streams of eastern Brazil are among the most threatened freshwater habitats in the Neotropics, having been heavily fragmented by deforestation, agriculture, and urban expansion. As a small-range endemic tied to flowing, well-oxygenated forest streams, P. bahiana is sensitive to siltation, the removal of riparian vegetation, and changes in flow regime, all of which degrade the clear-water rocky habitat it requires.
Feeding
Like the great majority of Neoplecostominae, Pareiorhaphis bahiana is principally a grazer of aufwuchs — the periphyton biofilm of microalgae (especially diatoms), bacteria, fungi, and trapped detritus that coats submerged stones in flowing water. Using its ventral suckermouth and rows of fine teeth, the fish rasps this film from rock surfaces, ingesting the algal and microbial matter together with incidental fine sediment.
Small benthic invertebrates and their larvae living within the biofilm and among the gravel are taken incidentally, so the diet is best described as predominantly herbivorous-detritivorous with an opportunistic invertebrate component. This trophic role is typical of small rheophilic loricariids, which function ecologically as scrapers in the riffle communities of upland and coastal streams.
The continual abrasion of the substrate by these catfishes and the constant renewal of the periphyton it grazes form part of the normal grazing dynamics of clear stony streams. Because P. bahiana is not a recognised aquarium species, there is no established body of captive feeding observation; any maintenance would, however, be expected to require an aufwuchs-rich, biofilm-coated rocky environment supplemented with vegetable matter, in line with the needs of comparable hill-stream loricariids.
Mating
Detailed reproductive observations specific to Pareiorhaphis bahiana are not well documented in the literature, so most of what can be said is inferred from the well-studied reproductive biology of the genus Pareiorhaphis and the broader subfamily Neoplecostominae. In these fishes, males develop pronounced hypertrophied odontodes — bristle-like structures along the head margins, snout, and often the pectoral-fin spines — as they reach reproductive condition. These structures are thought to function in both intrasexual combat between rival males and in defence of nesting sites.
Spawning in the genus is associated with sheltered sites among or beneath stones in flowing water, where a male establishes and defends a nest cavity. The bristle-bearing male is the territory holder, and the elaboration of his odontodes is a seasonal, condition-dependent trait linked to breeding activity. Females approaching spawning condition become heavier-bodied with developing eggs.
Given the rheophilic lifestyle, courtship and spawning are presumed to be tied to the seasonal hydrological cycle, with reproduction concentrated in periods of favourable flow. The strong sexual dimorphism in odontode development is the most conspicuous reproductive feature of the genus and is consistent across its many species.
Breeding
As with mating behaviour, there are no published captive-breeding accounts specific to Pareiorhaphis bahiana, and the species has essentially no presence in the aquarium hobby. Reproductive details are therefore extrapolated from the general pattern documented in the genus and in related Neoplecostominae. These are substrate-nesting loricariids in which the male guards the clutch.
In Pareiorhaphis and allied genera, the male selects and defends a cavity beneath a stone or in a rock crevice in flowing water. Adhesive eggs are deposited in this sheltered nest, and the male provides parental care, guarding the eggs and fanning them to maintain oxygenation until they hatch. Clutch sizes in small Neoplecostominae are modest, typically numbering from a few dozen to perhaps a hundred relatively large eggs, reflecting the trade-off toward larger, better-provisioned young that is common among stream-adapted catfishes.
Fry emerge as benthic, well-developed juveniles that immediately adopt the rock-clinging, biofilm-grazing habits of the adults. The combination of male-guarded clutches, larger eggs, and lower fecundity is a strategy well suited to the unpredictable, flow-driven environment of Atlantic Forest streams. Confirmation of these details specifically for P. bahiana would require dedicated field or captive study, which has not, to current knowledge, been undertaken.
In the aquarium
Pareiorhaphis bahiana is not a fish of the ornamental trade and is effectively absent from aquarium commerce; it is known primarily from scientific collections and the taxonomic literature. As such there is no established hobbyist husbandry tradition for the species, and any of the following is general guidance for the genus rather than tested practice for this fish specifically.
Were it to be maintained, P. bahiana would require a setup mimicking a clear, cool, fast-flowing Atlantic Forest stream: strong water movement and high oxygenation (ideally powerheads or a river-tank manifold), a substrate of smooth rocks and gravel, and surfaces well colonised by periphyton. Soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water kept cooler than typical tropical tanks (roughly 68–77 °F) would best reflect its native conditions. Pristine water quality with zero ammonia and nitrite is essential, as rheophilic loricariids are intolerant of the low-oxygen, organically loaded conditions that less specialised species tolerate.
Diet would centre on grazing surfaces rich in algae and biofilm, supplemented with vegetable foods. As a small, peaceful, bottom-dwelling grazer it would pose no threat to tankmates, though it would compete poorly in a warm, slow, heavily stocked community tank. The species is best regarded as one for specialist hill-stream and biotope aquarists rather than the general hobby, and given conservation concerns, captive maintenance should never draw on wild-collected stock without proper authorisation.
Conservation
Pareiorhaphis bahiana is a narrow-range endemic of coastal Bahia within the Atlantic Forest, one of the world's most heavily impacted biodiversity hotspots. The IUCN Red List status of this particular species is not confirmed here; many small-range Neoplecostominae remain either unassessed or assessed as Data Deficient owing to limited distributional and population information.
The principal threats to the species follow directly from the threats to its habitat. Eastern Brazilian Atlantic Forest streams have been extensively degraded by deforestation, conversion of land to agriculture and pasture, urban and industrial expansion, and the resulting siltation and pollution of watercourses. For a fish that depends on clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over clean rocky substrates, these changes are particularly damaging: increased sediment load smothers the periphyton-coated stones it grazes, while the loss of riparian forest raises water temperatures and destabilises flow.
Because the genus contains numerous local endemics with restricted ranges, conservation of these fishes is closely linked to the protection of intact forest catchments rather than to species-specific measures. Maintaining riparian buffers, water quality, and natural flow regimes in the coastal drainages of Bahia is the most effective safeguard for P. bahiana and the broader stream-fish community it belongs to. Definitive conservation assessment for the species would benefit from updated field surveys.
