A slender, nocturnal catfish of the upland streams of eastern Minas Gerais, Pareiorhaphis stephana inhabits the rocky headwaters of the Jequitinhonha and São Francisco drainages at elevations around 1,300 metres, grazing aufwuchs in clear, fast-moving water. Known from only a handful of localities in the Diamantina highlands, this Near Threatened neoplecostomid reflects the vulnerability of Brazil's Atlantic Forest transition zone fishes to the slow erasure of riparian habitat.

Taxonomy & naming

Pareiorhaphis stephana was formally described by Oliveira and Oyakawa in 1999, originally placed in the genus Hemipsilichthys as Hemipsilichthys stephanus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) subsequently recognises the valid combination Pareiorhaphis stephana following revision of the neoplecostomid genera, with the basionym combination now treated as a synonym.

Pareiorhaphis is a genus of neoplecostomid loricariids confined largely to south-eastern and southern Brazil, occupying clear, fast-flowing upland streams. The family Loricariidae places Neoplecostominae as a predominantly south-eastern Brazilian subfamily characterised by rheophilic, often dorsoventrally flattened small catfishes adapted to high-gradient streams. Members of the genus Pareiorhaphis are notable for facultative air-breathing — a trait documented in at least some species of the genus and likely related to the hypoxic conditions that can develop in isolated pools during dry-season low flow.

The type locality is the ribeirão das Pedras, approximately 1,984 ft above sea level, 2 mi north of Diamantina (approximately 18°10'S, 43°37'W), Diamantina municipality, in the Jequitinhonha River drainage, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The species epithet stephanus is a Latinised Greek name (stephanos, meaning crown or garland), likely honoring a collector or associate of the describing authors.

This fish was long listed as Pareiorhaphis stephanus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Pareiorhaphis, and the current combination Pareiorhaphis stephana is followed here.

Morphology

Pareiorhaphis stephana reaches a maximum standard length of 3.9 in SL (approximately 4.7 in total length), making it a medium-sized representative of its genus. The body form is typical of Neoplecostominae: elongate, moderately depressed, and armoured with the overlapping odontode-bearing scutes characteristic of loricariids. The snout is broad and the mouth ventral, adapted for scraping biofilm from rock surfaces in current.

As in many loricariids, sexual dimorphism manifests primarily in secondary ornaments associated with reproduction. The genus Pareiorhaphis shows the dermal odontode patterning typical of neoplecostomids, with males generally developing more prominent odontodes on the head, snout, and interopercular region during the breeding season. Detailed morphological comparisons specific to P. stephana relative to congeners are provided in the original description.

The species is nocturnal, a common trait among rheophilic loricariids that retreat beneath rocks and into crevices during daylight hours.

Habitat

Pareiorihaphis stephanus is known from rocky and sandy areas of clear, fast-moving streams in the Diamantina highlands of eastern Minas Gerais, at elevations around 1,984 ft. The type locality, ribeirão das Pedras, is a tributary within the Jequitinhonha River drainage; the species is also recorded from the São Francisco basin in the same general region.

The Diamantina highlands form part of the cerrado–Atlantic Forest transition zone, an area of high biological endemism intersected by rivers draining eastward to the Atlantic coast (Jequitinhonha) and westward to the interior (São Francisco). Streams in this zone are typically oligotrophic, clear, and well-oxygenated, with hard substrates of quartzite, schist, or ironstone over which algal biofilms develop.

The species is confirmed from only three locations, with the IUCN assessment noting it may occur at additional sites within suitable habitat in the broader Jequitinhonha drainage. Water chemistry data specific to the occupied localities have not been published, but upland cerrado streams in the region tend toward slightly acid to neutral pH and low to moderate conductivity, with cooler temperatures than lowland Brazilian rivers.

Feeding

Pareiorhaphis stephana is a benthic grazer in the hypoptopomatine/neoplecostomid mould — equipped with a suctorial mouth for scraping periphyton and aufwuchs from rock surfaces. In flowing upland streams with good light penetration, epilithic algae (particularly diatoms and green algae) form a productive biofilm over rock surfaces, supplemented by fungal hyphae, bacteria, and fine organic detritus. This aufwuchs community constitutes the primary food source for species with this oral morphology.

Detailed dietary studies for P. stephana in the field have not been published. The facultative air-breathing capability documented in Pareiorhaphis genus members more broadly suggests that at least some species in the genus can exploit conditions beyond the clear, fast-flowing optimum — retreating to slower, possibly more eutrophic marginal areas under certain conditions, where gut contents may include a greater detrital fraction.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour in Pareiorhaphis stephana has not been described in the published literature. The genus Pareiorhaphis and neoplecostomids more generally follow the loricariid norm of male-biased secondary sexual ornamentation, suggesting some level of male competition for territories or spawning sites. Nocturnal activity in the species is consistent with many loricariids where pair formation and spawning occur at night when predation risk is lower.

The rocky substrates that define the species' habitat provide potential spawning microhabitats — crevices, undercut banks, the undersides of large boulders — where eggs could be deposited in sheltered positions. Whether males exhibit territorial behaviour or parental care in this species is unknown.

Breeding

No published accounts of the breeding of Pareiorhaphis stephana are available, whether from field observations or captive reproduction. The species is not established in the aquarium hobby and no hobbyist breeding reports exist.

Within the broader Loricariidae, many small to medium-sized rheophilic species are presumed to spawn in rocky cavities or beneath boulders, with some degree of paternal egg-guarding. Whether P. stephana conforms to this pattern or differs — as some neoplecostomids do in showing less structured parental investment — cannot be stated from available information.

In the aquarium

Pareiorhaphis stephana is absent from the commercial aquarium trade and is not available to hobbyists. Its Near Threatened status, restricted range, and specialised upland-stream ecology make it an unlikely candidate for ornamental collection or export.

Hypothetical husbandry for institutional conservation purposes would require replication of the cold, well-oxygenated, fast-moving conditions of Diamantina highland streams: temperatures likely in the range of 64–72 °F (consistent with high-altitude Minas Gerais streams, though no published field data for the specific sites are available), neutral to slightly acid pH, low conductivity, strong flow, and rocky substrates covered with algae or biofilm for grazing. The nocturnal habits of the species mean that any husbandry assessment would require observation under dim or red-spectrum lighting.

Water temperature guidance is extrapolated from elevational and biomic context rather than published measurements; care should be taken not to maintain this species at tropical aquarium temperatures that might be appropriate for lowland Brazilian species.

Conservation

Pareiorhaphis stephana is assessed as Near Threatened by the IUCN (assessed 7 November 2018). The assessment notes that the species is known from only three confirmed localities — all within a restricted area of the Diamantina highlands — and that it comes close to qualifying as Vulnerable under Criterion B (restricted range, few locations, declining habitat quality). The qualifying trigger is the ongoing decline in habitat quality in the cerrado–Atlantic Forest transition zone of eastern Minas Gerais, driven by deforestation, conversion of native vegetation to agriculture, and sedimentation of upland streams.

The Diamantina region, while home to significant conservation reserves (including the Chapada Diamantina as a broader regional landmark and various protected areas within Minas Gerais), is subject to pressure from small-scale mining, road construction, and agricultural encroachment on riparian zones. Upland neoplecostomids are particularly sensitive to sedimentation because it smothers the epilithic algal communities and exposes rocky substrates to burial, destroying the microhabitat on which rheophilic grazers depend.

Monitoring of known populations and formal protection of key stream reaches in the ribeirão das Pedras catchment and associated Jequitinhonha tributaries would be the most direct conservation actions for this species.
