Taxonomy & naming
Pareiorhina aiuruoca was formally described in 2026 by Paulo L. C. Uzeda, André M. Katz, Felipe P. Ottoni, Wilson J. E. M. Costa, Francisco Langeani and Valter M. Azevedo-Santos, within a paper authored by Uzeda, Sartori, Katz, Ottoni, Costa, Langeani & Azevedo-Santos describing four new Pareiorhina species from the upper Paraná basin (Journal of Fish Biology, volume 108, issue 6, pages 1906-1933). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Pareiorhina aiuruoca as a valid species with no synonyms.
The genus Pareiorhina sits in subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, within the tribe Neoplecostomini — a group of small, heavily plated, rheophilic loricariids that some earlier classifications treated as its own subfamily, 'Neoplecostominae,' now placed as a tribe within Hypoptopomatinae. Molecular analysis in the description paper recovered Pareiorhina as polyphyletic: none of the genus's eleven currently recognised species, including the four newly described, form a clade with the type species Pareiorhina rudolphi. Instead, P. aiuruoca falls in a clade of species sharing a postdorsal ridge and simple (unicuspid) teeth, alongside P. carrancas, P. hyptiorhachis and P. mystica — informally, the 'P. carrancas clade.' P. aiuruoca had previously been recorded in regional faunal surveys under the name P. carrancas before this study demonstrated it was a distinct lineage.
The genus name Pareiorhina combines Greek pareia (cheek or jaw) and rhinos (nose). The specific epithet aiuruoca is a toponym, a noun in apposition referring to the Aiuruoca River drainage the species inhabits.
Morphology
The holotype is a 1.66 in standard length (SL) male; among the 27 measured specimens of the type series, standard length ranges from 1.13–1.66 in (mean 35.5 ± 0.11 in). Like other Pareiorhina, the body is depressed and covered in bony plates except for the ventral surfaces of the head and abdomen. P. aiuruoca carries a postdorsal ridge and unicuspid teeth (34-54 premaxillary and 33-52 dentary teeth), features that place it with P. carrancas, P. hyptiorhachis and P. mystica rather than with the type species P. rudolphi.
The species is most readily told apart from every congener by a distinctive cluster of 10-20 small platelets, each bearing more than ten odontodes, packed between the pelvic fins on an otherwise unplated abdomen — a character unique to this species within the genus. It further differs from P. carrancas by lacking keels on the dorsal and mid-dorsal plate series and by having two fenestrae, rather than one, on the front of the pelvic girdle, and from P. hyptiorhachis by an elliptical rather than rounded snout profile with a naked snout tip and 30 total vertebrae (P. hyptiorhachis has 29). Among the other three new species it stands out for dark spots scattered over the head, body and fins — occasionally forming a vermiculate pattern, chiefly on the head — and for a smooth, unfringed posterior margin of the lower lip. Uniquely in the genus, P. aiuruoca also shows variation in branched caudal-fin ray counts (12-14, modally 13) across the type series.
In life the dorsal surface is dark brown to dark orange with four pale saddles — at the dorsal-fin origin, the dorsal-fin end, mid-caudal-peduncle, and the caudal-peduncle end — over a background of dark spots that occasionally coalesce into a vermiculate pattern. Fin rays carry scattered dark spots, sometimes forming four or five diffuse bands, with translucent brown membranes between rays. The venter is light beige from mouth to urogenital region, with melanophores concentrated near plated areas, while the lateral surfaces of the head and trunk darken to brown, most pronounced from the urogenital region back to the end of the caudal fin. Preserved specimens fade to duller, less contrasting tones.
Habitat
The type locality, Córrego do Quilombo — a tributary of the Aiuruoca River in the municipality of Alagoa, Minas Gerais (22°11'34"S, 44°41'50"W, 1,899 ft above sea level) — sits between the Itatiaia National Park and the Serra do Papagaio State Park, an area with substantial native Atlantic Forest cover. Pareiorhina aiuruoca inhabits narrow (under 16 ft wide) and shallow (under 27.6 in deep) streams above 1,0 ft elevation, favouring stretches of rapids with strong current, high riparian cover, and clear, cold, highly oxygenated water; most specimens are captured in the central, fast-flowing part of the channel over cobble substrate.
The species is known from eight streams across the upper Aiuruoca River drainage, an affluent of the Rio Grande, on the northern slope of the Serra da Mantiqueira in southeastern Brazil. Most sites retain good riparian cover, though the describing authors found one previously documented locality heavily silted and largely abandoned by the species during 2023 resampling, underscoring its sensitivity to siltation and deforestation.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study exists for Pareiorhina aiuruoca; the original description is a taxonomic account and reports no feeding observations. Like other small Neoplecostomini within Hypoptopomatinae, the ventral, disc-shaped mouth and rasping, bronze-tipped teeth are consistent with grazing aufwuchs — algae, diatoms and biofilm — from rock surfaces in fast-flowing water, but this is a genus-level inference rather than a species-specific finding.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Pareiorhina aiuruoca. The original description records only that reproductively active females develop a marked widening of the body between the dorsal-fin and anal-fin origins, producing a bulging trunk in dorsal view — a state absent in males — alongside the conical urogenital papilla and pelvic-fin-spine flap that mark mature males. Beyond these external signs of reproductive condition, nothing about courtship or pair formation is known.
Breeding
No breeding has been recorded for Pareiorhina aiuruoca, in the wild or in captivity — the species was described in 2026 and has no aquarium history. Like other small rheophilic Hypoptopomatinae, it is presumed to be a cave- or crevice-spawner with some form of paternal guarding, but this is inferred from related genera rather than observed in P. aiuruoca itself.
In the aquarium
Pareiorhina aiuruoca is not in the aquarium trade; it was described from scientific collections only months before this account was written, and no L-number or hobbyist husbandry record exists. Its small size (under 1.8 in SL) and its habitat — narrow, shallow, cold, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated streams over cobble — suggest it would, in principle, suit a specialised, well-aerated biotope aquarium modelled on Atlantic Forest headwaters, but this is extrapolation from the wild habitat data in the original description, not aquarium experience with the species.
Conservation
Pareiorhina aiuruoca has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it was described in 2026. In the original description, the authors estimated its extent of occurrence at approximately 375 mi² across the eight known streams of the upper Aiuruoca drainage and, applying IUCN criteria themselves, recommended a status of Least Concern — noting that while most sites remain in good condition, the species appears sensitive to river siltation, and that urban expansion around the Itatiaia National Park and Serra do Papagaio State Park bears watching. This is the describing authors' own risk assessment, not an official Red List determination.
