Taxonomy & naming
Pareiorhina isabelae was formally described in 2026 by Valter M. Azevedo-Santos, Paulo L. C. Uzeda, André M. Katz, Wilson J. E. M. Costa, Francisco Langeani and Felipe P. Ottoni, within a paper authored by Uzeda, Sartori, Katz, Ottoni, Costa, Langeani & Azevedo-Santos describing four new Pareiorhina species from the upper Paraná basin (Journal of Fish Biology, volume 108, issue 6, pages 1906-1933). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Pareiorhina isabelae as a valid species with no synonyms.
The genus Pareiorhina sits in subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, within the tribe Neoplecostomini — a group of small, heavily plated, rheophilic loricariids that some earlier classifications treated as its own subfamily, 'Neoplecostominae,' now placed as a tribe within Hypoptopomatinae. Molecular analysis in the description paper found Pareiorhina to be polyphyletic, and placed P. isabelae in a clade with a postdorsal ridge and unicuspid teeth alongside P. carrancas, P. aiuruoca, P. hyptiorhachis, P. mystica and P. sofiae, rather than with the type species P. rudolphi. Within that clade, P. isabelae and P. sofiae form a distinct pair restricted to the Serra da Canastra ecoregion of the middle Grande River drainage, apart from the Serra da Mantiqueira-associated P. aiuruoca, P. carrancas and P. mystica. P. isabelae had previously been recorded in regional faunal surveys under the name P. carrancas before this study demonstrated it was a distinct lineage.
The genus name Pareiorhina combines Greek pareia (cheek or jaw) and rhinos (nose). The specific epithet isabelae honours Isabel Cristina de Azevedo Santos, mother of co-author Valter M. Azevedo-Santos, who first introduced him to fishing and provided logistical support during the collection of this and other recently described species in the region; it is a noun in the genitive case.
Morphology
The holotype is a 1.43 in standard length (SL) male; among the 25 measured specimens of the type series, standard length ranges from 1.13–1.52 in (mean 33.7 ± 0.1 in). No autapomorphic (unique-to-species) character was found to single out P. isabelae; instead it is diagnosed by a combination of traits. Like P. aiuruoca, P. carrancas, P. hyptiorhachis, P. mystica and P. sofiae, it carries a postdorsal ridge and unicuspid teeth (47-73 premaxillary and 42-78 dentary teeth — the highest tooth counts recorded among the six species in this clade), unlike the type species P. rudolphi.
It differs from P. carrancas by lacking keels on the dorsal and mid-dorsal plate series, by a rounded (rather than elliptical) head profile, and by higher premaxillary and dentary tooth counts; from P. hyptiorhachis by a naked snout tip, higher premaxillary tooth counts, a single fenestra (rather than two) on the front of the pelvic girdle, and 31 total vertebrae (P. hyptiorhachis has 29). Among the other three new species it is distinguished from P. aiuruoca by lacking both the cluster of abdominal platelets between the pelvic fins and the dark body spotting that mark that species, and by a fringed (rather than smooth) lower-lip margin; from P. mystica by a rounded rather than elliptical snout profile and a single pelvic-girdle fenestra; and from P. sofiae by the reach of the pectoral-fin spine, a naked snout tip, five infraorbital bones (vs. four), and higher counts of postdorsal-ridge plates.
In life, large specimens show a light-brown, dusky-marked pattern with inconspicuous dark bars on the fins; a photographed juvenile at the type locality (not collected) instead showed a broad, irregular dark midlateral stripe on an otherwise light-brown body. Preserved specimens are uniformly pale brown on the dorsal and lateral surfaces with a light-cream venter, and up to four faded dark bands may appear on the caudal-fin rays.
Habitat
Pareiorhina isabelae is known only from the Ribeirão Itaci microbasin, a Sapucaí River tributary system in the upper Rio Grande drainage, on the boundary between the municipalities of Carmo do Rio Claro and Ilicínea, Minas Gerais. The type locality — a stream locally called 'Riacho do Glicério,' below Cachoeira do Glicério — sits at 20°54'58"S, 45°56'22"W, 2730 ft above sea level. The three known streams originate on Chapadão mountain and share clear water, shallow depth and rocky bottoms.
At the type locality, large numbers of P. isabelae were found immediately below the tallest waterfall, while stretches farther downstream yielded far fewer specimens, all juveniles — a pattern the describing authors suggest may reflect either a modest upstream-migrating behaviour or an aggregated distribution near waterfalls. The species shares its type locality with two other range-restricted fishes, Hisonotus carmelitanorum and Trichomycterus adautoleitei, making 'Riacho do Glicério' a potential hotspot for endemic ichthyofauna in the middle Grande River basin.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study exists for Pareiorhina isabelae; the original description is a taxonomic account and reports no feeding observations. Like other small Neoplecostomini within Hypoptopomatinae, the ventral, disc-shaped mouth and rasping, bronze-tipped teeth are consistent with grazing aufwuchs — algae, diatoms and biofilm — from rock surfaces in fast-flowing water, but this is a genus-level inference rather than a species-specific finding.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Pareiorhina isabelae. The original description records only that reproductively active females develop a marked widening of the body between the dorsal-fin and anal-fin origins, producing a bulging trunk in dorsal view — a state absent in males — alongside the conical urogenital papilla and pelvic-fin-spine flap that mark mature males. Beyond these external signs of reproductive condition, nothing about courtship or pair formation is known.
Breeding
No breeding has been recorded for Pareiorhina isabelae, in the wild or in captivity — the species was described in 2026 and has no aquarium history. Like other small rheophilic Hypoptopomatinae, it is presumed to be a cave- or crevice-spawner with some form of paternal guarding, but this is inferred from related genera rather than observed in P. isabelae itself.
In the aquarium
Pareiorhina isabelae is not in the aquarium trade; it was described from scientific collections only months before this account was written, and no L-number or hobbyist husbandry record exists. Its small size (under 1.6 in SL) and its habitat — clear, shallow, rocky-bottomed waterfall streams — suggest it would, in principle, suit a specialised, well-aerated biotope aquarium modelled on Atlantic Forest headwater streams, but this is extrapolation from the wild habitat data in the original description, not aquarium experience with the species.
Conservation
Pareiorhina isabelae has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it was described in 2026. In the original description, the authors estimated its extent of occurrence at approximately 94 mi², noting that the species is known only from three streams whose downstream reaches — the Sapucaí River section they once fed — are now flooded by the Furnas Reservoir, fragmenting the population's connectivity. Because the known localities retain relatively preserved habitat and water quality, and no decline has been observed, the authors, applying IUCN criteria themselves, recommended a status of Least Concern. This is the describing authors' own risk assessment, not an official Red List determination.
