Peckoltia sp. L278 is a small, undescribed pleco from the Río Apure in Venezuela, sold as the Apure tiger pleco. The L-Wels registry places it in the Orinoco drainage and records the water as whitewater. L278 is a hobby code, not a scientific name, so the fish has no describing authority and no type specimens.

What's in the name

Peckoltia
  • PeckoltEponym — named after Theodor Peckolt (1822–1912), German-Brazilian botanist and naturalist
  • -iaLatin — Latinising suffix for genus names
L278
  • L278hobby code (L-number) — a number from the L-number system that the German magazine DATZ began in 1988 for imported suckermouth catfishes not yet identified to species; it stands in for a species epithet until the fish is formally described

Taxonomy & naming

L278 belongs to the L-number system, started by the German magazine DATZ in 1988 to label imported loricariids that could not yet be identified. It is a trade code, not a scientific name. The L-Wels registry lists the fish as Peckoltia sp. "L 278" and PlanetCatfish files it as Peckoltia sp. (L278); neither gives a second code, and no related LDA number is on record. The registry's common name is Apure tiger pleco, and its trade names add a German one, Apure-Zwergschilderwels (Apure dwarf shield catfish). It cites Seidel and Evers's Welsatlas 2 (2005) and Werner, Lechner and Schmidt's Miniatlas L-Welse (2005).

Morphology

Registry data put L278 at about 4.5 in total length. Its diagnostic characters are not on record: there is no description of the colour pattern or body shape, and the word "tiger" in the trade name is a label, not a description. The registry lists one similar form, Peckoltia sp. L377 (also filed as LDA 18). How the two are told apart is exactly the kind of detail a formal description would settle.

Habitat

According to the registry, L278 lives in the Río Apure in Venezuela, part of the Río Orinoco system, with the states Apure, Barinas and Guárico listed beside the river, and the water is whitewater. Habitat place, substrate, current and depth are all unrecorded, and borrowing them from related Peckoltia would be guesswork.

Feeding

The registry classes L278 as predominantly omnivorous; whether it eats plants is not recorded. In the aquarium that class is usually met with sinking pellets or wafers, frozen foods and some vegetables. What it eats in the Apure has not been observed.

Mating

The registry's sexing note is a genus-level statement for Peckoltia. It points to the odontodes on the rear of the body, the caudal peduncle and the upper caudal-fin ray as the characters to check, without saying which sex carries more. Peckoltia are typically cave spawners, the male guarding the eggs and larvae in the cave, and the registry treats the cave requirement as standard for the genus. Nothing specific to L278 is recorded.

Breeding

Captive breeding of L278 is marked as reported, with PlecoPlanet cited as the place the report appeared. Details of the spawning are not on record, so clutch size, timing and rearing of the young remain unknown.

In the aquarium

The registry's keeping range for L278 is 77–84 °F and pH 6.0–8.0, with a recommended tank length of 31.5 in — aquarium guidance, not field measurements. Small groups are recommended, though a single fish is possible. As with plecos generally, clean, well-oxygenated water with some current and caves or rock cover suits it, and territorial behaviour toward other plecos is common.

Conservation

L278 has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; an undescribed form cannot be evaluated until it has a name. The registry has no export-list information for this Venezuelan form. Collecting for the trade and river engineering affect some L-number habitats generally, but nothing specific is recorded for the Apure population.
