Taxonomy & naming
Peckoltia oligospila was first described by Albert Günther in 1864 in volume 5 of the Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum (page 244), from a specimen collected in the Rio Capin (= Capim), Pará State, Brazil. The original combination was Chaetostomus oligospilus; the species was later transferred to Peckoltia and is currently recognised as Peckoltia oligospila (Günther, 1864) by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), with the genus Peckoltia in subfamily Hypostominae of family Loricariidae.
The genus Peckoltia was erected to honour Gustavo Peckolt (1861–1923), a Brazilian-born German botanist and pharmacist who participated in the Natural History Commission of Rondon. Within Hypostominae the genus sits in the broadly circumscribed Ancistrini sensu Armbruster (2004), a diverse tribe that includes many of the commercially significant mid-sized plecos. Among hobbyists the species circulates most commonly as L006, a DATZ coding assigned when specimens first reached the German aquarium trade.
Fisch-Muller (2003, in Reis, Kullander & Ferraris, Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America) listed it from the lower Amazon basin and Tocantins drainage. The species is sometimes confused with other spotted Peckoltia in the hobby; accurate identification requires attention to the sparse, irregularly scattered spots rather than the dense vermiculations seen in some congeners.
Morphology
Adults of Peckoltia oligospila reach approximately 4–4.5 in standard length (SL), with FishBase recording a maximum of 6 in total length for the largest individuals. The body follows the standard loricariid armour plan: overlapping bony scutes cover the flanks and dorsum, while the ventral surface is softer and largely unplated. The caudal peduncle is moderately slender and the dorsal fin base is of moderate length.
Colouration is the species' most distinctive character. Ground colour ranges from tan to dark brownish grey, overlaid with a scattering of small, irregularly spaced dark spots — the epithet oligospila (Greek: oligo = few, spilos = spot) directly references this sparse spotting, which distinguishes the species from more heavily patterned Peckoltia such as P. compta. Spotting density and contrast vary somewhat with collection locality and condition.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Breeding males develop fine, tooth-like odontodes along the leading ray of the pectoral fins and across the posterior dorsal scutes. Females remain more uniformly smooth in these areas and, when gravid, show a noticeably wider body profile when viewed from above, particularly between the pectoral and pelvic fin insertions. Genital papilla examination is the most reliable sexing method in out-of-condition adults.
Habitat
The species is native to the lower Amazon drainage of Brazil, principally the Rio Capim and Rio Guamá sub-basins (Pará state) and the Tocantins river system. These are lowland tropical rivers of mostly blackwater to clearwater character, draining heavily forested terrain across the eastern Amazonian lowlands. Water temperatures in these systems typically range from 75–81 °F, pH 6.4–7.2, and conductivity tends to be low.
Microhabitat data from closely related Peckoltia suggest that P. oligospila associates strongly with submerged wood — sunken logs, root tangles, and debris accumulations — in areas of moderate current. The fish uses wood both as a refuge from predators and as a foraging substrate, rasping biofilm and associated detritus from surfaces. Rocky substrates with crevices also feature in the range, consistent with the cave-spawning behaviour observed in captivity.
The lower Amazon basin is subject to significant seasonal hydrological fluctuation, with the wet season (roughly December–May) expanding floodplain habitats and diluting river chemistry. Wild fish experience seasonal variation in temperature, dissolved oxygen, and food availability that keepers aiming to stimulate breeding in captivity can partially replicate through managed water changes and slight temperature cycling.
Feeding
Peckoltia oligospila is an opportunistic omnivore with a strong biofilm-grazing component to its diet in the wild. The ventral mouth and fine, comb-like teeth are well suited to scraping algae, periphyton, and the bacterial and fungal biofilm that colonises submerged wood and rock surfaces. Unlike the true xylophages of the Panaqolus/Panaque clade, Peckoltia does not extract significant nutrition from wood fibre itself, though it will rasp at the biofilm on driftwood surfaces.
In the aquarium, a mixed vegetable-biased diet serves the species well. Sinking algae wafers and spirulina-based pellets should form the dietary staple, supplemented regularly with blanched vegetables — courgette (zucchini), cucumber, sweet potato, and peas are all taken. Occasional offerings of protein-rich food such as bloodworm, white worm, or small frozen invertebrates add variety and support condition during breeding cycles. The species is not destructive to robust plants but may graze incidentally on soft-leaved or thin-leafed aquatic plants.
Mating
Peckoltia oligospila is a cave-spawning species following the general Peckoltia reproductive pattern. In the aquarium, males become territorial around potential spawning sites — caves, hollow driftwood sections, ceramic tubes, or stone crevices — and will display to, and occasionally skirmish with, rival males. The primary dimorphic trait deployed during courtship is the development of more prominent pectoral-spine odontodes in males, which are visible as fine, pale bristle-like projections along the leading spine.
Conditioned females with a noticeably wider abdominal profile are drawn toward male territory; the male courts by patrolling the cave entrance and occasionally making brief contact or pursuing the female. As with related genera, pair compatibility and the quality of available spawning sites appear to be the principal constraints on breeding success in captivity. Offering multiple cave options of slightly different dimensions allows individuals to self-select according to their preferences.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is reported but not common, and the species does not appear to have registered breeding accounts on PlanetCatfish as of recent review, suggesting it is kept and bred less frequently than more familiar Peckoltia such as P. compta. Cave spawning with paternal egg guarding is the expected mode, consistent with the reproductive biology of all characterised Peckoltia species.
In related cave-spawning Peckoltia, the male selects and defends a narrow cavity, the female deposits adhesive eggs on the cave wall, and the male remains in attendance through incubation — fanning eggs with pectoral and caudal fin movement to maintain oxygenation and removing fungused or infertile eggs. Clutch sizes in small-to-medium Peckoltia typically range from 20 to 80 eggs. Fry emerge as replicas of the adults, already scute-armoured, and begin grazing on biofilm within days.
To encourage spawning, keepers recommend a period of conditioning on varied, high-quality food, followed by a partial water change with slightly cooler, softer water to simulate seasonal cues. Subdued lighting and ample hiding options reduce stress and allow the male to guard effectively.
In the aquarium
At under 4.5 in SL, Peckoltia oligospila is genuinely community-sized — a meaningful advantage over the many pleco species that outgrow typical home aquaria. A single adult can be housed comfortably in an 80-litre aquarium; a pair or trio requires at least 30 US gal, with additional cave structures to prevent territorial friction between males.
Water parameters should reflect the lower Amazon origin: temperature 75–81 °F, pH 6.4–7.2, low to moderate hardness (soft water ideal but moderate hardness is tolerated). The species does not require extremely soft or acidic conditions but is not suited to hard alkaline water of the type used for rift-lake cichlids. Regular partial water changes of 25–30% weekly are advisable.
The tank should include submerged driftwood — not because P. oligospila is a xylophage, but because wood surfaces colonise rapidly with the biofilm that constitutes a key part of the natural diet, and wood provides behavioural enrichment and cover. Flat rocks, ceramic caves, and sections of PVC pipe make excellent spawning and refuge sites. The species is entirely peaceful toward fish of unrelated species and safe with most community tankmates; conflicts are typically limited to territorial interactions between males of the same species in confined spaces.
Avoid housing with large, boisterous cichlids or species that will outcompete it at feeding time. Corydoras catfish make good companions — both genera share similar water requirements and occupy the substrate without direct competition.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Peckoltia oligospila as Least Concern in 2018, reflecting its occurrence across the lower Amazon drainage and Tocantins system of Brazil without evidence of significant population decline. The Capim, Guamá, and Tocantins basins are large systems and the species appears to be locally common in suitable wood-rich habitat.
The lower Amazon region does face ongoing pressure from agricultural expansion, deforestation, and dam construction — the Tucuruí Dam on the Tocantins has profoundly altered hydrological and habitat character in parts of the species' range. At present the IUCN does not consider these pressures sufficient to elevate its threat status, but any significant reduction in the inundated wood habitat on which the species depends could affect local populations. The ornamental trade takes modest numbers, and the species is not among the most heavily collected plecos. Captive breeding in the hobby is desirable but not yet widespread.
