Taxonomy & naming
The species was first described by George Albert Boulenger in 1898, in the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London (volume 14, part 7, no. 2, page 425, Plate 41, figure 1), under the name Chaetostomus bachi. The holotype (BMNH 1897.12.1.61, unique) was collected from the Rio Juruá, Brazil. The original generic assignment Chaetostoma is noted in the CoF as the correct original genus spelling.
The species passed through several combinations: Isbrücker (1980) transferred it to Peckoltia, where it remained the standard combination — Peckoltia bachi (Boulenger 1898) — until 2015. Armbruster, Lujan, and Taphorn in their 2015 revision (Neotropical Ichthyology 13: 97–108) erected the new genus Peckoltichthys to accommodate this species and the closely related P. filicaudatus based on the distinctive hypertrophied pelvic musculature and associated structural changes to the pelvic girdle. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, updated June 2026) accepts the current valid name as Peckoltichthys bachi (Boulenger 1898).
The IUCN Red List assessment (Salvador 2020) and several post-2020 regional checklists still apply the name Peckoltia bachi, using the 2020 CoF snapshot. The CoF now recognises Peckoltichthys as valid; PlanetCatfish reflects this. The species carries three hobbyist registration codes: LDA030 (the primary number used since its first aquarium import), L146, and L232.
Morphology
Peckoltichthys bachi reaches approximately 5 in SL, with PlanetCatfish recording 5 in SL; the IUCN assessment (Armbruster 2008 data) cites 3.5 in total length for the type series, suggesting measured specimens from the original description are smaller than field-collected adults. The fish is elongated in body shape (FishBase classification) with a depressed head and typical loricariid armour.
The diagnostic feature of the genus is the deep ventral pockets on the pelvic girdle for hypertrophied pelvic adductor muscles — unique among Hypostominae. In intact specimens, the pelvic fins fold ventrally so that the pelvic-fin spines run parallel with the body's ventral surface, giving a smooth, rounded belly profile quite unlike the splayed pelvic presentation of most plecos. The pelvic-fin spines themselves are widened. The abdomen bears enlarged plates. The eye is positioned low on the head.
Coloration is mottled — a variable pattern of pale blotches and dark pigment with diffuse, large spots on the head; the abdomen is unmarked. This mottled pattern distinguishes P. bachi from most Peckoltia (which show dorsal saddles or discrete spots), though it shares the mottled appearance with Peckoltia caemosa, from which it differs by having a largely unpatterned abdomen. The opercle generally retains a patch of odontodes at all sizes.
Habitat
Peckoltichthys bachi is distributed across the upper Amazon basin and its major tributaries in Brazil (Acre, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia), Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. The type locality is the Rio Juruá; verified records extend to the Rio Ucayali system, the Putumayo, and other western and central Amazon tributaries. A single specimen from near Villavicencio in the Río Meta drainage (Colombia) has been questioned as possibly misidentified, since no other Orinoco records are known.
Armbruster (2008) describes the species as occurring 'at the edge of medium to large rivers among submerged twigs and grasses, usually in flow' — a habitat of moderate current over fine debris and organic material, distinct from the rocky rapids favoured by Hypancistrus or the large wood piles used by Panaqolus. The preferred temperature range (PlanetCatfish) is 72–81 °F. Amazon basin waters where the species occurs are generally warm, soft, and acidic to near-neutral, with conductivity and pH reflecting the mix of white- and blackwater influence in different parts of its range.
The species is noted as a facultative air-breather at the genus level (FishBase), consistent with the loricariid capacity for aerial respiration in warm, seasonally oxygen-depleted backwaters.
Feeding
Peckoltichthys bachi is an aufwuchs grazer and generalist benthic feeder. Wild specimens live among submerged vegetation and debris at river margins, where they graze on biofilm, algae, fine organic detritus, and the invertebrates associated with this substrate. The diet is broadly similar to that of other mid-sized Hypostominae: primarily plant-based material gleaned from surfaces, with incidental invertebrate protein.
In captivity the species is an undemanding feeder. Blanched vegetables — courgette, cucumber, sweet potato — are taken readily, as are commercial algae wafers and spirulina discs. Sinking carnivore or omnivore pellets can supplement the diet. Driftwood for rasping is beneficial, providing both fibre and entertainment value for an actively foraging fish. The species does not appear to require specialised or expensive foods and is generally considered easy to feed given access to a varied diet and a mature, algae-bearing setup.
Mating
No detailed courtship observations for Peckoltichthys bachi are recorded in the hobby literature or in academic sources, reflecting both the rarity of the species in captivity and the absence of any documented breeding events. Based on close relatives within the Hypostominae and on the general loricariid reproductive template, the species is assumed to follow a male-guarded cave-spawning strategy with the male defending a preferred cavity and attracting or courting females to it.
The unusual pelvic anatomy of Peckoltichthys — with the fins adducted against the body surface — may affect positioning behaviour during spawning or mate assessment, though this is speculative. Sexual dimorphism has not been clearly described for this species; in Hypostominae generally, odontode development on the pectoral spine, interoperculum, and snout is typically more pronounced in males, and females are broader across the abdomen when gravid.
Breeding
No captive breeding reports for Peckoltichthys bachi are registered on PlanetCatfish or documented in the published hobby literature as of this writing. The species is uncommonly kept and rarely imported in large numbers, making successful breeding attempts infrequent. The similar-sized and ecologically comparable Peckoltia species have been bred in captivity, indicating that Peckoltichthys bachi is likely capable of reproducing under suitable aquarium conditions; the challenge is primarily one of availability, species recognition, and appropriate husbandry.
Based on genus-level expectations, breeding would require a well-matured tank with appropriate caves or PVC tube shelters sized for the fish (~5 in SL adults), stable water quality, and conditioned adults fed a diverse diet. Soft, warm water — 75–81 °F, pH 6.5–7.0 — would best approximate wild conditions. The male would be expected to guard eggs and early fry through the typical loricariid paternal care pattern. Clutch size is unknown; small to mid-sized hypostomines typically produce 20–80 eggs per spawn.
In the aquarium
Peckoltichthys bachi occasionally enters the European and North American specialist trade under the code LDA030 or simply as 'Bola Pleco', and more rarely under L146 or L232. Its modest size — adults around 5 in — makes it suitable for mid-sized aquaria of 40 US gal or more, considerably more manageable than the large Aphanotorulus or Pterygoplichthys species. It can be maintained in community setups with other peaceful fish that share its soft-water, warm preferences.
The tank should provide good water movement and filtration, soft to moderately soft water (pH 6.2–7.2, dH below 10), and a temperature of 72–81 °F. The unusual pelvic anatomy gives the fish a distinctive swimming profile and a characteristically smooth belly when viewed head-on — a conversation piece among pleco enthusiasts who know what to look for. Decor should include driftwood, smooth or rounded rocks, and cave structures (coconut shells, PVC tubes, terracotta caves).
Intraspecific compatibility is unclear given the small number of keepers; five registered keepers on PlanetCatfish suggests the species is rarely kept in groups. Standard hypostomine caution applies: males may be territorial toward conspecifics if space and cave sites are limited. No reports of it damaging plants or harassing other fish are documented.
Conservation
Peckoltichthys bachi was assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN (Salvador 2020, published 2023; last assessed 27 October 2020), under the name Peckoltia bachi. The assessment notes a wide range across the Amazon basin in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, encompassing approximately 2.66 million km² of extent of occurrence. No specific threats were identified; the population is considered frequent and abundant based on the ICMBio (2018) Brazilian assessment.
The upper Amazon tributaries where P. bachi occurs are subject to ongoing deforestation, agricultural expansion, and in some areas artisanal gold mining (particularly in Rondônia and Amazonian Peru), which increase sediment loads and can alter river bank microhabitats. The species' preference for river-edge habitats among submerged vegetation and debris makes it somewhat sensitive to bank destabilisation, though no documented population declines are on record. The breadth of the distribution provides resilience against regional disturbances.
