Despite the common name 'Giant Otocinclus', Hypoptopoma gulare is no true Otocinclus — it is the largest member of a separate but related genus, maxing out around 5–5.5 in in total length where its diminutive cousins top out at 1.5 in. Described by Cope from the Río Marañón in Peru in 1878, it wears the diagnostic flat-headed, wide-eyed look of Hypoptopoma on a body large enough to draw a second glance from any aquarist accustomed to conventional 'otos'.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypoptopoma gulare was described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1878 in the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society (volume 17, number 101, page 679), from a single holotype (ANSP 21477) collected at Loreto, Río Marañón, Peruvian Amazon. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the valid combination as Hypoptopoma gulare Cope 1878, with synonyms including Hypoptopoma joberti and Otocinclus joberti — the latter reflecting the early confusion between Hypoptopoma and Otocinclus that persisted for decades in the literature.

The genus Hypoptopoma was established to accommodate a group of Hypoptopomatinae with a distinctly wide, flattened head bearing laterally placed eyes — an adaptation for life in shallow, often turbid water rather than the fast-flowing, clear mountain streams preferred by some relatives. Aquino & Schaefer (2002, 2010) produced the most thorough revisions of the genus, and their work confirmed H. gulare as a valid species distributed across the Amazon basin with a type locality in the Marañón-Upper Amazon system.

Within Loricariidae, Hypoptopoma belongs to subfamily Hypoptopomatinae (Armbruster, 2004), the group containing Otocinclus, Parotocinclus, and allies — all small-bodied armoured catfishes with ventrally flattened bodies and sucking mouths adapted to grazing biofilm from surfaces.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 4 in standard length (SL) / 5.5 in total length (TL), making H. gulare substantially larger than any Otocinclus and the most commonly kept species in its genus. The body is stocky and moderately compressed, with an exceptionally wide, strongly flattened head — the most diagnostic external feature of the genus. The eyes are positioned on the sides of the head and point partly upward, giving the fish a wide field of view above and to the sides. The caudal peduncle is normal-proportioned (not extremely elongate), and the tail fin is moderately forked.

Coloration is variable but typically olive-brown to tan dorsally, with complex reticulate or speckled patterning formed by the interplay of the bony scutes. The ventral surface is pale cream or whitish. The pattern may include dark blotches or a mottled appearance that provides camouflage against sandy or gravelly substrate.

The body is armoured with overlapping bony scutes in the typical loricariid fashion. The head is especially well-armoured dorsally — the wide, depressed head with its lateral eyes is the clearest morphological marker separating Hypoptopoma from Otocinclus, which has a more elongate snout and less flattened head profile. The oral disc is well-developed and suited to rasping biofilm from submerged surfaces.

Sexual dimorphism is not well-documented in the literature for this species specifically. In related Hypoptopomatinae, females are generally broader-bodied than males when gravid, and this is likely the case here.

Habitat

The Catalog of Fishes places H. gulare in the Amazon River basin including the lower and upper Río Ucayali, and records in the literature (Aquino & Schaefer 2010; Chuctaya et al. 2022) and PlanetCatfish confirm an extensive distribution across Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, and Venezuela — essentially a pan-Amazonian species.

The type locality, the Río Marañón near Loreto, Peru, is part of the Upper Amazon system — a large, lowland river with warm, moderately turbid, softwater conditions typical of white-water Amazonian rivers. FishBase records a temperature range of 73–79 °F and a pH range beginning from approximately 7.0, consistent with the near-neutral to slightly acidic conditions of much of the western and central Amazon.

Microhabitat preferences for Hypoptopoma in the wild appear to include shallow, slower-moving or marginal areas of larger rivers and their tributary streams, with sandy or silty substrate, submerged leaf litter, and aquatic vegetation. The wide, flattened head and laterally-placed eyes suggest adaptation to looking upward for threats from above — consistent with shallow, exposed habitats where aerial predators and large fish pose a risk. The genus is facultatively air-breathing, allowing brief excursions to the surface when dissolved oxygen is low.

Feeding

Hypoptopoma gulare, like the rest of the genus and subfamily, is primarily a biofilm and periphyton grazer. In the wild it rasps the thin layer of diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, bacteria, and fine detritus coating submerged surfaces — plant stems, leaf litter, woody debris, and sandy substrate. The oral disc is well-adapted to making close contact with gently contoured surfaces.

In the aquarium, the feeding strategy is analogous to Otocinclus but on a somewhat larger scale. Established tanks with a moderate algae biofilm on glass, rocks, and plant leaves suit the species well. Supplementary algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking pellets, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and spinach are all accepted. Like otocinclus, H. gulare should not be expected to maintain condition solely on whatever scraps reach the bottom — deliberate supplemental feeding is required.

At 5–5.5 in total length, the species consumes noticeably more food than a 1–1.5 in Otocinclus, and this should be factored into feeding regimens and bioload calculations. Unlike the xylophage Panaqolus and Panaque, this species does not require wood as a dietary component. It does benefit from the aufwuchs surface that colonises well-cured driftwood, but the wood itself is not eaten.

Mating

Detailed mating observations for H. gulare are not available in the primary ichthyological literature, and captive breeding reports are absent from the PlanetCatfish community database. Given the broader phylogenetic context of Hypoptopomatinae, courtship likely involves male pursuit of females, possible territorial competition between males, and some form of substrate-attached spawning.

The wide, flattened head and laterally positioned eyes may play a role in visual communication during courtship — in some loricariids, lateral eye position facilitates mutual inspection during approach, allowing both fish to assess the other while facing in complementary directions. Whether this is relevant to H. gulare's mating system specifically is not established.

For aquarists attempting to condition this species, the approach used for other large-bodied Hypoptopomatinae — quality varied diet, stable clean water, and potentially the trigger of a water change with slightly cooler, softer water to simulate wet-season conditions — is a reasonable starting point. The species' rarity in breeding reports is partly a reflection of its relatively limited presence in the hobby compared to Otocinclus.

Breeding

No verified captive breeding of Hypoptopoma gulare has been published or recorded in major hobbyist databases as of 2026. This is consistent with the broader pattern for Hypoptopoma species, which are infrequently bred in captivity compared to Otocinclus. The genus is occasionally imported but is not among the mainstream loricariids that have been reliably bred and raised in aquaria.

Given the phylogenetic placement in Hypoptopomatinae, the reproductive strategy almost certainly involves adhesive eggs deposited on submerged surfaces without parental care — the pattern found in Otocinclus and Parotocinclus. Whether H. gulare uses specific substrate preferences (leaf surfaces, flat rocks, aquarium glass) is undocumented.

An aquarist attempting a breeding project would be working largely without a road map. A species-only tank providing multiple potential spawning surfaces (broad-leaved aquatic plants, smooth flat stones, aquarium glass), stable soft acidic water at 75–79 °F, a nutritionally varied algae-based diet, and simulated seasonal cues (water changes with slightly cooler water) would be the recommended approach — but results should be considered experimental.

In the aquarium

Hypoptopoma gulare is the most commonly kept species in its genus, with 21 registered keepers on PlanetCatfish, yet it remains a niche choice — sought by aquarists who want an 'oto-like' grazer at a scale that makes more visual impact in a mid-sized tank. At 5–5.5 in TL it is about four times the length of a typical Otocinclus and requires a correspondingly larger setup: a 120-litre tank is a reasonable minimum for a small group.

The species is peaceful and does not dig, uproot plants, or bother tankmates. Its wide, flattened head makes it look quite different from other loricariids and contributes to its occasional trade name of 'flathead suckermouth'. Tankmates should be peaceful fish of similar size; very small fish may not be targeted actively but can be stressed by the presence of a larger benthic fish competing for food and territory.

Water parameters should reflect the Amazonian lowland origin: temperature 72–81 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water (up to ~15 dH). Moderate to low flow is appropriate — this is not a torrential-stream specialist like Chaetostoma. Filtration should be efficient since the larger body size means greater waste production than otocinclus.

As with all Hypoptopomatinae in captivity, adequate algae-based food is critical. Supplementing with nightly algae wafer drops, rotating blanched vegetable offers, and occasional spirulina pellets ensures the fish stays in condition. Acclimatisation can be slow — newly imported specimens may initially refuse food; gradual acclimatisation with clean water and algae-heavy surfaces is important in the first weeks.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypoptopoma gulare as Least Concern in 2020, citing its large and continuous distribution across the Amazon basin — one of the world's largest river systems — and the absence of evidence for population-level declines. The species is collected occasionally for the aquarium trade but is not exported in large volumes compared to Otocinclus, and there is no captive breeding in the hobby that might reduce collection pressure.

The Amazon basin faces substantial long-term threats from deforestation, river impoundment, artisanal and industrial mining (particularly mercury from gold mining, which contaminates river systems across Amazonia), and agricultural expansion reducing riparian buffers. For a benthic grazer dependent on clean substrates and algal biofilm, increased turbidity from deforestation and direct substrate contamination from mining are the most relevant threats.

The broad geographic distribution — encompassing Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, and Venezuela — provides the kind of range redundancy that protects a species from localised habitat degradation. The species is currently not considered at risk, and no trade restrictions or conservation measures apply. Ongoing Amazon deforestation monitoring and expansion of protected areas in the western Amazon would benefit the long-term prospects of this and many co-occurring species.
