The origin of Pseudacanthicus sp. L282 is unknown: the registry queries Venezuela, then adds that even Venezuela is doubtful. What is on record is a trade name, King Galaxy cactus pleco (Schneeball-Kaktuswels in German), a size of more than 8 in total length and a carnivore diet. L282 is a hobby code for an undescribed fish.

What's in the name

Pseudacanthicus
  • pseudo-Greek — false, resembling but not identical to
  • AcanthicusGreek/Latin genus name — the related genus Acanthicus, from akanthos = thorn or spine
L282
  • L282hobby code (L-number) — a number from the L-number system that the German magazine DATZ began in 1988 for imported suckermouth catfishes not yet identified to species; it stands in for a species epithet until the fish is formally described

Taxonomy & naming

A trade code from the DATZ system for imported loricariids that could not yet be identified, L282 is not a scientific name. The fish has no describing authority and no type specimens. The registry lists it as Pseudacanthicus sp. "L 282" without a cf. or aff. comparison; PlanetCatfish files it as Pseudacanthicus sp. (L282). Trade names on record are King Galaxy cactus pleco and the German Schneeball-Kaktuswels (snowball cactus catfish). L97, L520 and Pseudacanthicus fordii are named as similar catfishes, and the bibliography cites the Welsatlas 2 and the Miniatlas L-Welse, both 2005.

Morphology

The registry puts L282 at more than 8 in total length; no measured maximum is on record. The trade names read like descriptions of its appearance, but no pattern or other diagnostic characters are given, so none can be stated. It is placed in Pseudacanthicus, a genus of suckermouth catfishes armoured in bony plates that carry small odontodes.

Habitat

No locality is on record for L282. The registry gives Venezuela with a query mark, noting that even Venezuela is doubtful and the exact origin is not known. No river system, water type, substrate or other habitat detail is recorded, and the atlas therefore assigns no country or ecoregion to this form.

Feeding

Registry data class L282 as predominantly a carnivore that does not eat plants. In the aquarium, meaty sinking foods such as frozen mussel, prawn and large bloodworm, with sinking carnivore pellets, fit that class. Its natural diet is unknown: neither the locality nor the habitat is documented.

Mating

The sexing statement is genus-level and not specific to L282: in Pseudacanthicus the male has a longer, broader head, is often more attractively coloured and often has a larger dorsal fin. The genus is typically a cave spawner, the male guarding the eggs and larvae in the cave. No courtship or spawning behaviour is on record for this form.

Breeding

No aquarium breeding of L282 is recorded; the registry lists breeding as unknown. Clutch size, egg numbers and fry development are undocumented. Related Pseudacanthicus are cave spawners in which the male guards the eggs and larvae, which is the pattern to expect if this form is ever spawned, but that remains a genus-typical expectation rather than an observation.

In the aquarium

With no known origin, the registry's keeping figures for L282 are the only guide: 77–84 °F and pH 5.5–7.5, in a tank at least 59 in long. They are aquarium guidance only. Small groups are recommended, and a single fish is possible. Clean, well-oxygenated water with current and rock or wood caves suits a plated carnivore of this genus, and territorial behaviour toward other plecos is common.

Conservation

Even the country of origin of L282 is unknown, so no habitat or threats can be assessed and nothing is on record about its status in the wild. It is Not Evaluated by the IUCN Red List; an undescribed form cannot be assessed until it has a name. In general, collection for the trade and river engineering affect some L-number habitats, but nothing connects them to this fish.
