Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria rupestris was originally described by Schultz in 1944 as Loricaria rupestris, from specimens collected in the Maracaibo basin of Venezuela — probably from the Río Apón or Río Santa Ana area, based on Schultz's 1944 collecting localities in that region. The species was subsequently referred to Rineloricaria as the family Loricariidae was progressively reorganised, and for many years appeared in the literature and hobby under the combination Rineloricaria rupestris.
The monotypic genus Fonchiiichthys was erected by Isbrücker & Nijssen in 1979 to receive this species, separating it from Rineloricaria on morphological grounds. It remains the sole valid species in the genus. The name Fonchiiichthys honours Fonchii Ingrid Chang Matzunaga (1963–1999), a Peruvian ichthyologist; ichthys is the Greek word for fish. The species epithet rupestris derives from the Latin rupestris, meaning 'of rocks' or 'rock-dwelling', descriptive of the species' rocky stream habitat.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and FishBase both recognise the valid current combination as Rineloricaria rupestris (Schultz, 1944), with Loricaria rupestris Schultz, 1944 and Loricaria uracantha rupestre as synonyms. No L-number has been assigned.
This fish was long listed as Fonchiiichthys rupestris; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Rineloricaria, and the current combination Rineloricaria rupestris is followed here.
Morphology
Rineloricaria rupestris reaches a maximum standard length of approximately 3.5 in. In overall form it conforms to the whiptail body plan characteristic of Loricariinae: the body is extremely elongate and strongly depressed from head to tail, the caudal peduncle is narrow and keeled, and the head is broad and flattened with the mouth positioned ventrally as a sucking disc.
The body is protected by longitudinally arranged rows of interlocking bony scutes. Colouration is typically a muted brown with darker patterning, providing camouflage against the sand, gravel, and rock substrate of its stream environment. The ventral surface is pale.
As in other loricariin whiptail catfishes, males are expected to develop odontode bristles on the snout and interopercular region during the breeding season, providing a clear basis for sex determination in conditioned adults. Females are typically broader-bodied when gravid. Habitat
Rineloricaria rupestris is endemic to the Lake Maracaibo basin in northwestern Venezuela. Lake Maracaibo is one of South America's largest and oldest lake systems — a brackish-influenced coastal lake connected to the Gulf of Venezuela — but the fish fauna of its freshwater tributaries is distinct from the lake itself. The relevant habitat for this species is the clear to moderately turbid rocky streams and rivers draining into the Maracaibo basin, where the substrate is rocky or gravelly and current provides good water oxygenation.
The species name rupestris ('of rocks') is consistent with a microhabitat preference for rocky stream sections, where biofilm and aufwuchs accumulate on submerged stone surfaces. The Maracaibo basin lies in a tropical lowland climate with year-round warm temperatures. Specific physico-chemical measurements for the collection localities of this species are not available in the published literature reviewed for this article.
Feeding
Rineloricaria rupestris is a biofilm and periphyton grazer, using its ventrally directed sucking disc to scrape algae, diatoms, and organic detritus from rock, gravel, and wood surfaces. This feeding mode is shared by Loricariinae broadly and is reflected in the 'rock-dwelling' epithet of the species, suggesting an association with rocky surfaces where biofilm development is typically richer than on fine sediment.
In an aquarium setting, algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking tablets, and blanched vegetable matter (courgette, spinach) would constitute the dietary core, supplemented occasionally with fine sinking pellets or frozen invertebrate foods. Specific aquarium feeding records for this species are absent from the hobby literature.
Mating
No specific courtship observations for Rineloricaria rupestris have been published. In the wider Loricariinae, males establish territories centred on potential spawning sites — crevices, cave-like cavities under rocks, hollow wood — and display their odontode development to rivals and receptive females. Breeding-condition males are noticeably more bristled than females, and the interopercular odontodes in particular serve as sexual signals.
Given the monotypic status of Fonchiiichthys and the near-absence of aquarium records, there are no hobbyist observations to supplement the published literature, which itself does not detail courtship behaviour for this species.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Rineloricaria rupestris are available in hobby sources. Based on the well-documented breeding biology of closely related Loricariinae (Rineloricaria and allies), the species is expected to be a cave spawner with paternal brood care: the male selects a sheltered cavity, fertilises and guards the adhesive egg clutch deposited by the female on the cavity walls, and fans the eggs with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygen supply until the fry hatch and disperse.
Confirmation of this reproductive mode, as well as data on clutch size and incubation period, await direct observation in the field or in captivity.
In the aquarium
Rineloricaria rupestris is a specialist-interest fish with minimal trade presence. Its Venezuelan origin and the modest commercial activity around Maracaibo-basin fish mean that specimens are rarely if ever imported, and no established husbandry literature exists for this species.
Any aquarium housing this fish should reflect the tropical lowland conditions of its origin: warm water (approximately 75–82 °F), near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH consistent with the Maracaibo basin watershed, and moderate hardness. A substrate of sand and coarser gravel with flat rocks and driftwood providing both grazing surfaces and shelter would be appropriate. Clean, well-oxygenated water and a light current are expected requirements, consistent with the rocky-stream microhabitat implied by the species name.
At 3.5 in SL this is a mid-sized whiptail — manageable in a 100-litre aquarium with appropriate furnishings, and likely peaceful toward non-competing tankmates. Hobbyist data, however, are essentially nonexistent.
Conservation
Rineloricaria rupestris has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. The Lake Maracaibo basin is one of Venezuela's most heavily impacted freshwater regions — Venezuela's oil industry is concentrated around Maracaibo, and the lake itself has suffered from oil spills, industrial effluent, eutrophication from agricultural runoff, and significant habitat alteration over the past century. The freshwater tributaries draining into the basin vary considerably in condition, from relatively intact highland streams to heavily degraded lowland channels.
For a species with a restricted distribution in a region under sustained industrial and agricultural pressure, the absence of any formal conservation assessment is itself a concern. A formal IUCN evaluation, including field surveys to establish current range and population status, would be a worthwhile contribution to Venezuelan freshwater fish conservation.
