Taxonomy & naming
Apistogramma psammophila was described in 2019 by the German cichlid specialists Wolfgang Staeck and Ingo Schindler, in the journal Vertebrate Zoology (69(1): 103-110), from the lower Rio Atabapo drainage straddling Colombia and Venezuela. The holotype, a 1 in SL male catalogued as ICN-MHN 24052, is held at the Instituto de Ciencias Naturales of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá; it was collected near the mouth of Caño Chamuchina, a left-bank tributary of the lower Atabapo in Departamento Guainía (about 3°47'22\"N, 67°38'12\"W). Paratypes from a right-bank tributary on the Venezuelan side (Estado Amazonas) and from the type locality are deposited in Dresden (MTD-F). Like most ornamental Apistogramma, the type series entered science through the aquarium trade rather than from a dedicated scientific survey.
The fish has a long backstory in the hobby. As early as 1981 the German aquarist Werner Schmettkamp found a single odd male in a shipment of cardinal tetras and informally dubbed it the \"Doppelband\" (double-band) Apistogramma; Kullander formally described that Rio Negro fish as Apistogramma diplotaenia in 1987. Atabapo populations were later noticed (Anderson 1994; Gottwald & Koslowski in Stawikowski et al. 1995) and circulated as \"Apistogramma cf. diplotaenia 'Orinoco'\", with early hybridization experiments already hinting they were a separate species. Staeck and Schindler confirmed that hunch and gave the Orinoco fish its own name. Within the genus the species sits in the subfamily Cichlinae, tribe Geophagini; Römer (2006) placed its close relative Apistogramma diplotaenia in a complex of its own within the broad Apistogramma agassizii lineage, but both Kullander (1987) and the molecular work of Miller & Schliewen (2005) found this group's exact position among congeners hard to resolve, so its deeper relationships remain genuinely open.
Morphology
This is a very small cichlid. FishBase lists a maximum of just 1 in standard length, taken from the male holotype, but the type series itself is larger: Staeck and Schindler measured paratypes up to 1.5 in (about 1.5 in) SL, so a figure near 1.5 in SL is a fairer ceiling for a grown male, with females smaller. The body is moderately elongate with a short, rounded snout and a caudal peduncle longer than it is deep. Ground colour is understated — pale brown on the back and nape, grey on the head, whitish on chest and belly — which throws the dark markings into relief.
Those markings are the species' signature. Two dark horizontal stripes run along each flank: a narrow upper stripe above the lower lateral line and a slightly broader lower one that curves down from behind the eye, then runs back to fuse with the upper stripe on the caudal peduncle, so the two bands meet both in front of the pectoral fin and again at the tail. Below the lower stripe sits an irregular row of six to eight short, dark vertical bars over the belly — the single most reliable feature separating psammophila from diplotaenia, which never shows them. The suborbital stripe broadens markedly toward its lower end, often into a conspicuous black blotch; there are two dark spots at the pectoral axilla and no spot at the base of the tail. Adult males are the showy sex: the soft dorsal and anal fins draw out into long filaments that nearly reach the back edge of a distinctly lanceolate (lance-shaped) caudal fin, the pelvic fins trail filaments reaching almost to mid-body, and a reddish flush spreads over the cheek and chest. Females are plainer and, unusually for the genus, do not turn the bright lemon-yellow that most Apistogramma females wear when guarding a brood. As in all Apistogramma, the dark pattern is strongly mood-dependent — stressed fish wash out almost completely, and the diagnostic belly bars show best in calm, settled animals, which makes juveniles essentially impossible to tell from diplotaenia without locality data.
Habitat
Apistogramma psammophila is known only from the lower Rio Atabapo and its small tributaries, a stretch of the upper Orinoco system on the Colombia (Guainía) – Venezuela (Amazonas) frontier. This places it firmly in the Orinoco basin, not the Amazon — a point worth stressing, since its sister species lives a watershed away in the Rio Negro, and several other cichlid pairs show the same complementary split between the two drainages. The Atabapo is a classic blackwater river: tea- to coffee-coloured water stained by humic and tannic compounds leached from the surrounding forest, almost free of dissolved minerals.
The in-situ chemistry is extreme even by blackwater standards. Field measurements along the lower Atabapo by the naturalist Chris Englezou recorded temperatures of roughly 83–87 °F, pH between about 3.7 and 4.3, and conductivity of only 12–13 µS/cm; a survey of the exact igarapé where psammophila was found logged similar numbers (around 86 °F, pH ~3.9). Staeck and Schindler describe the type habitat in the same terms — clear, very acidic, extremely soft, tea-coloured water. (Because the original description gives no single set of numbers for psammophila itself, the temperature and pH values used here are drawn from these documented lower-Atabapo field measurements and should be read as habitat-typical rather than as a published species envelope.) What sets the fish apart ecologically is where it lives within that water: not in leaf litter, the default Apistogramma microhabitat, but out over exposed sandy beaches and banks. The describers found it several metres off the open beach in water about 1.5 to 2 metres deep, where the animals lived singly and well spaced across a wide sandy area with little cover. Sand-dwelling is shared only with Apistogramma diplotaenia and is unique within the genus.
Feeding
No gut-content study has been published for Apistogramma psammophila, so its diet is inferred from its genus and its habitat. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.2, the value expected of a small carnivore, and Apistogramma generally are micro-predators that pick tiny invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans and other meiofauna — from the substrate. Living over open sand rather than in leaf litter, psammophila most plausibly works the interstitial fauna of the sandy bottom and its thin scatter of detritus. The Atabapo is a strikingly nutrient-poor system; in such humic, acidic water biological productivity is low, which is part of why the dwarf cichlids here are small, cryptic and thinly spread. A fish this size is itself prey for the river's larger characins, pike cichlids and other predators.
Mating
Apistogramma psammophila is not a pair-bonding fish. In the wild the describers found adults living singly, dispersed widely over the sand — a spacing pattern that, as with related Apistogramma, points to a polygamous, harem-style mating system rather than lasting monogamy. Experienced keepers who have worked with the species say the same thing plainly: these dwarf cichlids do not form pairs, and the workable arrangement is one male maintaining a loose territory over several females, with males rotated in to spawn. The sexes are organized around female-held spawning sites that a male visits, courts at, and then leaves the female to tend.
The flip side of that biology is touchiness. Keepers report that the fish are remarkably intolerant of one another even at barely sexually mature 1 in: not so much through outright damaging fights as through constant low-grade stress, which in this delicate species is enough to depress the immune system and tip animals into serious disease. In aquaria the fish do come together into pairs at least during the breeding season, but the practical lesson from both the field observations and hobby experience is that space and broken sightlines matter more than for almost any other dwarf cichlid — a male that can see a female across open water will harass her relentlessly.
Breeding
Like its relatives, Apistogramma psammophila is a cave or crevice spawner that hides its eggs. From the describers' aquarium observations, spawning takes place in a concealed spot, with roughly 20 to 50 eggs attached to the ceiling of the shelter — a modest clutch typical of the smaller Apistogramma. Care is divided along the usual geophagine lines: the female guards the eggs, then the larvae and free-swimming young, while the male patrols and defends the wider territory. Beyond clutch size and this basic division of labour, the species' reproduction is barely documented; figures such as hatch and free-swimming times have not been reliably published for it, and most of what hobbyists know is extrapolated from better-studied congeners. As with every Apistogramma studied to date, sex determination in this lineage is expected to be temperature-dependent, so rearing temperature skews the sex ratio of fry — a real consideration both for breeders and, given a warming forest, for wild populations. The species has been bred in captivity (F1 fish occasionally circulate among specialist keepers), but it is regarded as one of the harder dwarf cichlids to spawn, largely because of the punishing water chemistry its eggs need and the fish's intolerance of crowding.
In the aquarium
Apistogramma psammophila is a rare fish in the hobby. Described only in 2019, it remains genuinely uncommon in trade, and the accumulated captive experience with it is thin compared with popular congeners such as Apistogramma cacatuoides or Apistogramma agassizii. Most of what is reliably known about keeping the species comes from a handful of specialist dwarf-cichlid keepers who have worked with it, supplemented by the broader body of knowledge about closely related blackwater Apistogramma — which is worth bearing in mind wherever species-specific detail runs out.
The first non-negotiable is water chemistry. The Rio Atabapo where this fish lives is one of the most acidic aquatic environments in South America: pH roughly 3.7–4.3, conductivity around 12–13 µS/cm, and temperature 83–87 °F. In practice, few keepers run pH that low; most report success at pH 4.5–5.5 provided the water is genuinely soft (conductivity under ~30 µS/cm, total hardness close to zero) and heavily stained with dissolved humics. That means reverse-osmosis or distilled water as the base, tannin-releasing botanicals or peat filtration, and absolutely no calcareous rocks or coral sand buffering the chemistry back up. Attempting this species in tap water, even mildly hard tap water, is likely to end in chronic illness or early death — the fish's immune system evolved for near-mineral-free water and does not cope well with the ionic environment of a typical domestic supply.
The sand connection implied by the name psammophila is real and should be honoured in the tank. A bed of fine white or natural-coloured sand several centimetres deep, reproducing the open sandy banks of the Atabapo, suits these fish far better than gravel or bare glass. They will be seen moving slowly over it, pecking at the surface film of biofilm and meiofauna, in a way that is quite unlike the leaf-litter foraging of most Apistogramma. Scattered dried leaves (Indian almond, oak, beech) and a few small caves — half coconut shells, ceramic spawning cones or small clay pots on their sides — complete the picture; cover is needed less for hiding than for providing discrete spawning sites. Intense planting is less critical than it would be for forest-floor Apistogramma, but floating plants that diffuse light and emergent vegetation providing surface shade are genuinely useful, both for the fish's comfort and for maintaining the low pH through CO₂ enrichment.
Because this species does not pair-bond, the recommended arrangement is a harem: one male to two or three females, in a tank of at least 20–25 US gal (approximately 80 × 15.5 in footprint). The footprint matters more than the volume. Males can and will harass females relentlessly — because sight lines over open sand are long, the keeper needs to create visual breaks with wood, clusters of leaf litter or low planting, so that a female can find relief from male attention. Keeping two males together is inadvisable. Tankmates should be small, unassertive, and adapted to the same extreme chemistry: pencilfish (Nannostomus, especially Nannostomus marginatus), small tetras such as Paracheirodon axelrodi, or small corydoras adapted to acidic soft water (Corydoras adolfoi, Corydoras sterbai) can work as dither fish and as indicators of tank conditions. Any fish that needs harder or more neutral water, any noticeably larger or more boisterous fish, or any bottom-dwelling species that will compete for caves and sand territory should be avoided.
Sexing adults is straightforward — males are larger, with the lanceolate caudal fin and extended dorsal, anal and pelvic filaments described under Morphology; females are smaller and plain. Sexing juveniles is harder, and an unusually unhelpful feature of this species is that females reportedly do not develop the bright yellow brood coloration seen in most Apistogramma when guarding young, which can make a spawning female easy to overlook. Spawning follows the typical Apistogramma cave pattern: eggs cemented to the ceiling of the shelter, clutch of roughly 20–50 eggs, female guarding and fanning alone while the male patrols the outer territory. Getting fry through the first weeks demands the same soft, acidic water used for the adults — harder or even slightly buffered water at this stage is a common killer of eggs and larvae in blackwater Apistogramma generally. Difficulty overall is high; this is not a beginner's dwarf cichlid, and most losses in the hobby are attributable either to water chemistry that is too hard or too neutral, or to stress from inadequate space and sightline management.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma psammophila as Endangered (EN), under criterion B1ab(iii), assessed on 24 July 2020 (assessor Lina Mesa-Salazar). That category reflects a very small known range — the species is recorded only from the lower Rio Atabapo and its immediate tributaries — combined with a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its blackwater habitat. It is not CITES-listed, and FishBase rates its intrinsic fishing vulnerability as low; the threat is to the habitat, not from targeted collection, even though the fish does enter the ornamental trade in small numbers.
The pressure on that habitat is real and well documented. The upper Orinoco around the Atabapo and the neighbouring middle Orinoco — including Yapacana National Park in Venezuela's Amazonas state, close to where the Venezuelan paratypes were taken — has become a hotspot for illegal alluvial gold mining. Satellite monitoring and reporting from groups such as MAAP and Global Forest Watch document forest clearance, riverbed disturbance, sediment loading and mercury contamination across this border region, and the same activity reaches into Colombia's Guainía. For a narrow-range endemic restricted to clear, acidic, sediment-free sand habitats, that combination is exactly the wrong kind of disturbance: sand-dwellers depend on undisturbed substrate and high water clarity, and humic blackwater systems are easily degraded by erosion and pollution. The honest summary is that psammophila is not threatened by aquarists but by what is happening to its river — and that its Endangered listing rests on the small size and fragility of the single drainage it calls home.
