Taxonomy & naming
Papyrocranus congoensis was described in 1932 by the American ichthyologists John Treadwell Nichols and Francesca La Monte, based on material from the Congo basin. It belongs to the family Notopteridae, the Old World featherback knifefishes, within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against toothed plates on the roof. Osteoglossiformes is one of the most ancient surviving lineages of teleost (bony) fish, a scattered, deep-time radiation now found only as relict pockets on four continents: South American arowanas and arapaima, African featherbacks, butterflyfish and mormyrids, and Southeast Asian and Australasian arowanas and saratogas. Papyrocranus congoensis represents this order's Central African branch, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats it as a valid species.
The genus name Papyrocranus is built from Greek papyros, "papyrus" or "paper", and kranion, "skull" — an allusion to the notably thin, paper-like bones of the head typical of the genus. The species epithet congoensis is a Latinized place name meaning "of, or from, the Congo", marking the Congo River basin as the type locality. In the trade it is sold as the Congo black knife or Congo marble knifefish, names that reflect its dark, mottled colouring. It is worth stating plainly: this is an Old World Notopteridae, not a New World electric knifefish (order Gymnotiformes, covered separately in the Atlas's knifefishes section) — the two groups share a blade-bodied, undulating-fin body plan purely by convergent evolution, not common ancestry.
Morphology
Like all Notopteridae, Papyrocranus congoensis has a strongly laterally compressed, blade-shaped body, deepest just behind the head and tapering to a narrow point toward the tail. A long, ribbon-like anal fin runs from just behind the vent along almost the entire underside and merges into a reduced tail fin, while the dorsal fin is small, set far back, and easy to miss altogether. This arrangement lets the fish propel itself by rippling the anal-fin ribbon in a slow travelling wave while holding the body itself nearly still — a hovering, equally-easy-forward-or-backward gait well suited to a nocturnal ambush hunter working through tangled cover.
Body colour is dark grey to blackish-brown broken by pale, irregular mottling — the marbled pattern behind the trade name "Congo marble knifefish" — which likely helps break up its outline among submerged wood and root tangles. FishBase reports a maximum size of about 11.5 in standard length, and aquarium imports are typically offered smaller, in roughly the 7.1–10.6 in range, making this a comparatively modest-sized featherback next to giants like the clown knife (Chitala ornata), which can approach a metre. Like other Notopteridae, it is an obligate air-breather, gulping air at the surface via a vascularised swim bladder that doubles as an accessory breathing organ — an adaptation to the frequently low-oxygen swamp and backwater habitats it favours.
Habitat
Papyrocranus congoensis is endemic to the Congo River basin of Central Africa, recorded from the Cuvette Centrale (the vast, low-lying central basin), parts of the Ubangi system, and the lower Congo River. It is a freshwater, bottom-associated (demersal) species of slow-moving streams, swamps and backwaters rather than the main river's fast current.
Water in these habitats runs warm and close to neutral: cited parameters put the species at roughly 73–79 °F and pH 6.2–7.2, typical of the slow, structurally complex, often tannin-tinted creeks and flooded-forest margins found across the Congo basin. Its status as an obligate air-breather is itself a clue to that habitat — these are frequently oxygen-poor waters where the ability to gulp air at the surface is a real advantage over a gill-only fish.
Feeding
Papyrocranus congoensis is a nocturnal predator built for ambush rather than pursuit. By day it lies motionless among driftwood, roots and dense cover; after dark it hunts by slowly sculling into range of prey on its rippling anal fin before striking. Notopteridae generally take small fish and aquatic invertebrates in the wild, and species-specific dietary data for P. congoensis is sparse, but its build and behaviour place it firmly in that carnivorous, ambush-predator guild.
In the aquarium it is not a fussy feeder once settled, but it is a committed carnivore: bloodworms, mysis shrimp and other meaty frozen foods are readily taken, and many specimens eventually learn sinking pellets. Because it feeds mainly after dark, offering food once the lights are out — or keeping the tank dimly lit — gets the best results and avoids competition from more active daytime tankmates. Any fish small enough to fit in its mouth should be regarded as potential food, not a companion.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been documented in detail for Papyrocranus congoensis specifically; the account below draws on the broader, better-studied biology of Notopteridae and should be read as a reasonable inference rather than a confirmed description of this species. Spawning in the family is associated with warm conditions, reported around 77–82 °F for the group, and a pair or bonded group selects a patch of submerged vegetation or another hard surface as a spawning site rather than digging a pit or building a bubble nest.
Detailed courtship behaviour is poorly recorded for African Notopteridae generally, and captive spawnings of P. congoensis are rare enough that no detailed account exists in the sources reviewed here. What is established for the family is the outcome: adhesive eggs deposited on a fixed surface, followed by dedicated paternal guarding — a very different reproductive strategy from the free-scattering or mouthbrooding habits seen elsewhere among the bonytongues.
Breeding
Notopteridae are substrate egg-layers. Eggs are adhesive, reported at roughly 0.15–0.16 in in diameter for the family, and are attached to submerged wood, roots, rockwork, or — in captivity — a deliberately placed pipe, pot or plank. From that point the male takes on all parental duty, guarding the clutch and fanning it with his fins to keep it oxygenated and free of silt and fungus; incubation runs roughly 168–204 hours (about 7–8.5 days) depending on temperature, based on data from the family as a whole.
Reproduction of Papyrocranus congoensis specifically has not been documented in the sources reviewed here, and captive breeding is essentially unreported in the hobby — this is not a fish anyone should expect to spawn in a home aquarium. The species is presumed to follow the same substrate-spawning, male-guarding pattern seen in its better-studied relatives Chitala and Notopterus, but that remains an inference rather than a confirmed account for this species; data sparse.
In the aquarium
Papyrocranus congoensis needs real room: a minimum of about 75 US gallons (roughly 55 US gal) is cited for a single specimen, and given its laterally compressed but still substantial body, more floor space and swimming length is better still. It is shy and strictly nocturnal, so the tank should offer generous cover — driftwood, root tangles and plants — to give it somewhere to retreat during the day; a bare, brightly lit tank will simply keep it hidden and stressed. Reported captive lifespan is 8–12 years, so this is a long-term commitment, not an impulse buy.
As an obligate air-breather it must have unimpeded access to the surface to gulp air, so avoid any cover arrangement that seals off airflow or traps it below the waterline. Feed a predatory diet of bloodworms, mysis shrimp and similar meaty foods, ideally after the lights go out. It should never be trusted with anything small enough to swallow, but is otherwise a manageable, non-aggressive tankmate for larger, robust fish too big to fit in its mouth — a fish for a patient, dedicated keeper rather than a busy community tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Papyrocranus congoensis as Least Concern, an assessment dated 16 February 2009. It is known from a substantial stretch of the Congo basin — the Cuvette Centrale, parts of the Ubangi system, and the lower Congo River — and is not currently considered at elevated risk of extinction.
As with much of the Congo basin's fish fauna, the main long-term pressures are indirect — deforestation and land-use change around tributary swamps and backwaters, and the broader monitoring gaps common across the region — rather than any documented, targeted threat to this species. Given its wide reported range across the central Congo system, there is no current evidence of population decline that would warrant a higher threat category.
