Taxonomy & naming
The species was described in 1965 by the Belgian ichthyologist Dirk F. E. Thys van den Audenaerde, then the foremost authority on African tilapias, in a short paper in the Revue de Zoologie et de Botanique Africaines titled 'Description d'une nouvelle espèce de Tilapia de la rivière Nyong (Cameroun).' He placed it in the broad, then-undivided genus Tilapia as Tilapia mvogoi. The holotype (Royal Museum for Central Africa, Tervuren, MRAC 152666) and a long series of paratypes were taken at Akonoling on the Nyong River in southern Cameroon. When Ethelwynn Trewavas split the old catch-all Tilapia into substrate-spawning Tilapia, the paternal and biparental mouthbrooders Sarotherodon, and the maternal mouthbrooders Oreochromis, this fish was reassigned to Sarotherodon; the combination Sarotherodon mvogoi was formalised by Trewavas and Teugels in their 1991 treatment for the Check-list of the Freshwater Fishes of Africa (CLOFFA), and it has been accepted as valid ever since (Stiassny et al. 2007; Fermon et al. 2022). Within Sarotherodon it sits in the tribe Oreochromini of the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. It is a Lower Guinea / Congo-fringe endemic with no junior synonyms, and it has never carried an established English common name.
Morphology
Sarotherodon mvogoi is a short, deep-bodied tilapia reaching a maximum recorded length of about 8 in SL. The fins follow the tilapiine plan: 14 to 16 dorsal spines and 9 to 12 dorsal soft rays, with 3 anal spines and 8 to 10 anal soft rays. Trewavas and Teugels diagnosed it by a suite of meristics and proportions: 20 to 24 gill rakers on the lower limb of the first arch, 27 to 30 scales in the lateral-line series, a head 33.6 to 39.5 percent of standard length, a comparatively short lower pharyngeal jaw (less than 43.5 percent of head length), and 24 to 27 total dorsal rays counting spines. As in all Sarotherodon, the jaw teeth are fine and brush-like rather than coarse and fixed. In life the body is silver-grey, darker over the back and whitish below, marked by a row of small pink spots along the flank with roughly one to each scale. The soft dorsal and anal fins are produced into trailing points, the dorsal tip reaching back over the basal quarter to three-quarters of the caudal fin and the anal not quite so far, while the pelvic fins reach about to the vent. Sexual dimorphism is subtle and centres on the genital papilla, which is small and leaf-shaped in the male and truncate in the female; unusually for a cichlid, the species does not develop strong breeding colour differences between the sexes.
Habitat
This is a freshwater, demersal fish of the warm equatorial rainforest rivers of west-central Africa. Its range straddles a notable biogeographic boundary: it occurs in the upper Dja, which drains into the Sangha and thence the middle Congo basin, as well as in the Nyong and Ntem rivers of southern Cameroon, which flow independently to the Atlantic, and in the Ivindo system of Gabon (part of the Ogowe/Ogooue basin). It is thus shared between the Congo drainage and the coastal Lower Guinea rivers. The IUCN assessment characterises its habitat simply as inland wetlands. No detailed in-situ water chemistry has been published for this particular species, but the blackwater and clearwater forest streams and rivers it inhabits across this region are typically warm and soft, running acidic to near-neutral; figures in the order of pH 6.0 to 7.5 and temperatures of roughly 23 to 28 degrees C are representative of its lowland equatorial environment. As a riverine, bottom-oriented fish of small-to-medium watercourses it lives in shallow water; FishBase carries no measured depth range, and the practical band is the few metres typical of these forest rivers rather than any great depth.
Feeding
No dedicated diet study has been published for Sarotherodon mvogoi, and its trophic level is estimated rather than measured (FishBase gives about 2.2, placing it low on the food web among herbivore-detritivores). Its feeding ecology is best read from its anatomy and its genus. Sarotherodon are microphagous grazers and filterers: the fine, flexible, brush-like jaw teeth for which the genus is named, combined with numerous gill rakers (20 to 24 on the lower limb in this species), are the equipment of a fish that browses and strains fine material rather than seizing large prey. Congeners such as the well-studied blackchin tilapia feed on filamentous algae, periphyton, benthic diatoms, phytoplankton, detritus and the associated micro-invertebrates and decaying organic matter. Sarotherodon mvogoi is expected to forage similarly over the beds of its forest rivers, working algal films and soft sediment for plant material, micro-organisms and detritus, a generalist primary-consumer role in the river community.
Mating
The defining trait of the genus Sarotherodon is mouthbrooding, and it is here that these fish diverge most sharply from the maternal-mouthbrooding Oreochromis of the aquaculture trade. In Sarotherodon the eggs are brooded orally by the male alone or by both parents, an arrangement Trewavas used to separate the genus. For Sarotherodon mvogoi the published behavioural note is brief but pointed: when sexually active the fish lacks marked sexual dichromatism and forms only temporary pair bonds. This fits a system in which a male and female associate just long enough to spawn, rather than maintaining the persistent, strongly colour-signalled pairs seen in some substrate-spawning cichlids. The absence of a bright breeding livery is itself consistent with a mouthbrooder that does not rely on prolonged visual courtship at a defended nest. Detailed courtship sequences, territorial behaviour and any role of male nest-building have not been documented in the wild for this species, and what can responsibly be said is drawn from the genus pattern rather than from direct observation of mvogoi.
Breeding
Breeding has not been described in detail for Sarotherodon mvogoi specifically; the account below is therefore the genus-typical mode, flagged as such. Sarotherodon are oral mouthbrooders in which parental care is paternal or biparental: after the eggs are fertilised they are taken up and incubated in the mouth, where they are sheltered and aerated through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, with the fry returning to the buccal cavity for refuge. This contrasts with the strictly female mouthbrooding of Oreochromis and with the open substrate spawning of true Tilapia. Mouthbrooding tilapias trade fecundity for protection: clutches are modest by tilapiine standards, on the order of a few hundred relatively large eggs in similarly sized Sarotherodon, rather than the thousands an open-spawner produces. The temporary pair bonds reported for this species suggest the parents disperse once the brood is independent. No egg counts, incubation period, fry size at release, or spawning triggers have been published for Sarotherodon mvogoi itself, and any specific figure should be treated as an inference from its relatives until field or aquarium data appear.
In the aquarium
Sarotherodon mvogoi is essentially an ichthyologist's fish rather than a hobby staple. It has been kept by specialists in African cichlids, and the Cichlid Room Companion carries a photograph of an aquarium male in the collection of Anton Lamboj, but it is not commercially traded and reliable husbandry accounts are scarce. There is no settled care literature, so any recommendations are extrapolated from the genus and from its wild environment. A fish reaching roughly 8 in and living in flowing rainforest rivers needs a large, well-filtered, well-oxygenated aquarium with strong water movement and a long footprint, on the order of 59 in or more for an adult group. Soft, warm, slightly acidic to neutral water in the range of about 23 to 28 degrees C and pH 6.0 to 7.5 matches its native conditions. As a microphagous grazer it should be fed a vegetable-forward diet, spirulina-based and algae-based prepared foods supplemented with small live and frozen invertebrates, rather than a meat-heavy menu. Like most tilapias it is robust and adaptable, but it is also a digger and a grazer that will disturb planting, and males can become territorial and pugnacious as they mature, so generous space and a considered choice of robust tankmates are sensible. Anyone intending to spawn it should be prepared to observe and record the breeding behaviour, since the basics of its reproduction remain undocumented and would be a genuine contribution.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Sarotherodon mvogoi as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out on 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants and published in 2010; it records the population trend as unknown and lists no known threats. The species is given a reasonably wide range across the upper Dja, Nyong, Ntem and Ivindo systems of Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo and Gabon, and it carries no CITES listing and is judged harmless to people and of low fishing vulnerability. That comparatively comfortable status should be read against the wider pressures on the equatorial forest rivers of the region, where deforestation, expanding agriculture, artisanal and industrial mining, and the prospect of dam development are recognised stressors on Lower Guinea and Congo-basin fish faunas. None of these is documented as a specific threat to this cichlid, but the broad gaps in basic knowledge of its biology, abundance and population trend mean its security rests largely on the present integrity of its rainforest habitat rather than on detailed monitoring.
