Taxonomy & naming
Crenicichla tuca was described in 2015 by Lubomír Piálek, Klára Dragová, Jorge Casciotta, Adriana Almirón and Oldřich Říčan, in a paper in the Argentine journal Historia Natural (Tercera Serie, vol. 5, no. 2) that simultaneously named two new pike cichlids from the lower Iguazú and reappraised the status of three others. The holotype is an adult male, 6 in in standard length (MLP 10818, formerly MACN-ict 9522), collected in arroyo Deseado in the lower Iguazú River above the Iguazú Falls, Misiones Province, Argentina, with paratypes held at the Museo de La Plata. Within the genus, Crenicichla tuca belongs to the Crenicichla mandelburgeri species complex of the larger Crenicichla lacustris species group — the radiation of pike cichlids centred on the upper Paraná and adjacent La Plata drainages, rather than the Amazon/Orinoco-centred saxatilis and lugubris assemblages. The authors framed the four endemic Iguazú pikes as a textbook case of sympatric ecomorph divergence: alongside the ancestral large-mouthed piscivore Crenicichla iguassuensis and the small-mouthed picker/molluscivore Crenicichla tesay, they recognized a gregarious periphyton-grazer (Crenicichla tapii) and this large-mouthed, thick-lipped "cavity explorer/excavator," Crenicichla tuca. A 2023 generic revision of the pike cichlids by Varella and colleagues proposed splitting Crenicichla into several genera; under that scheme the Iguazú endemics fall in a separate lineage, but the proposal is not universally adopted and the long-standing name Crenicichla is retained here. The genus name combines the Latin crenulatus, "notched" or "clipped" (for the serrated edge of the preopercle), with cichla; the epithet tuca is the Guaraní word for the toucan.
Morphology
Crenicichla tuca is a small pike cichlid by the standards of a genus that includes half-metre giants — the largest type specimen is the 6 in SL holotype, so a maximum of roughly 6 in standard length is realistic. It has the elongate, cylindrical, large-headed body shape typical of the genus, but two features set it apart from every other Iguazú pike: conspicuously hypertrophied (swollen, fleshy) upper and lower lips set on large jaws, and one or two dark rectangular, un-ocellated blotches sitting just below the upper lateral line immediately behind the rear edge of the gill cover. It also carries a longer head than its congeners. Adults of both sexes show a yellow-orange ground colour with large orange dots scattered over the cheek and gill-cover region, and the dark suborbital (tear) stripe of typical pike cichlids is here reduced to a few widely separated dots. The flanks lack the bold vertical bars seen in many relatives. Sexual dimorphism is the strongest of any Iguazú pike cichlid: males are heavily peppered with dark scattered dots over the body, caudal peduncle and the unpaired fins, while females are essentially unspotted on the body. Fin counts run to about 20 dorsal spines with 10–12 soft rays and three anal spines with 8–9 soft rays.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the lower Iguazú River basin above the Iguazú Falls, the natural barrier that closes off this fauna from the rest of the Paraná system and makes it one of the most distinctive endemic fish communities in South America. Its known range runs from the Misiones Province of Argentina across into the adjoining Brazilian state of Paraná. Crenicichla tuca is a fish of the main river channel and larger rocky reaches; it is conspicuously absent from small tributaries, especially those that lack rocky bottoms. The describers observed it among the rocks beneath the visitor walkways that cross the river just above the falls, where it occurred as scattered solitary individuals over flat-rock and boulder substrate in clear, fast-flowing water. The lower Iguazú here is a subtropical, clear-water river cut into sedimentary and basaltic bedrock (part of the ancient Paraná–Etendeka flood basalts), and the rocky, periphyton-rich bottoms are central to the whole endemic pike-cichlid community. No in-situ chemistry was published with the original description; as a clear, well-oxygenated subtropical upland river the water is near-neutral and moderately soft, and water temperatures track a seasonal subtropical regime rather than the steady warmth of the Amazon.
Feeding
Crenicichla tuca is the "cavity explorer/excavator" of the Iguazú pike-cichlid guild — a predator that has traded the open-water ambush style of typical pikes for a crevice-probing one. Field observers watched single fish among the rocks repeatedly ramming their heads and thick lips against the rock surfaces, a behaviour the describers tied directly to the species' enlarged jaws and hypertrophied lips. The picture that emerges is of a fish that works its swollen mouth into cracks and cavities in the bedrock to flush out and seize hidden invertebrates and small fishes, rather than chasing prey in midwater. This is one extreme of a remarkable ecological spread: in the same stretch of river the ancestral Crenicichla iguassuensis remains a conventional large-mouthed piscivore, Crenicichla tapii grazes periphyton from flat rock, and Crenicichla tesay crushes snails with molariform pharyngeal teeth — together the four span essentially all known feeding ecomorphs of the entire genus. Unlike its grazing neighbour, Crenicichla tuca readily took baited hook-and-line, consistent with a predatory rather than herbivorous diet. FishBase places its trophic level near 3.3, in line with a small carnivore.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship or pair formation in Crenicichla tuca specifically; it has been seen in the wild only as scattered solitary individuals, never in groups, which fits the generally territorial habits of pike cichlids outside the breeding season. What can be said is drawn from the genus as a whole. Crenicichla are monogamous, biparental cichlids that form pair bonds and defend a territory centred on a spawning site. In the lacustris-group pikes to which Crenicichla tuca belongs, a ripe female typically solicits a male, the pair establishes and guards a cavity or sheltered nest, and the two then cooperate in defending eggs and fry. The strong sexual dimorphism in this species — heavily spotted males versus plain females — is the kind of visual signal that such pair-bonding cichlids commonly use in mate recognition and courtship, though its precise role here has not been studied.
Breeding
The reproduction of Crenicichla tuca has not been documented, in the wild or in captivity. Like all pike cichlids it is expected to be a biparental, monogamous substrate or cave spawner: the female deposits adhesive eggs on a sheltered surface — inside a rock crevice or cavity in a species so tied to rocky bottoms — and both parents guard and fan the clutch, then shepherd the free-swimming fry. Clutch sizes are undocumented for this fish; small lacustris-group pike cichlids of comparable size typically lay on the order of one to a few hundred eggs per spawning, a genus-typical figure offered here only as a rough expectation, not a measured value. Parental care in the genus is shared and prolonged, with the pair escorting a school of fry for some weeks after they become mobile. Until the species is bred and observed, all of this remains inference from close relatives rather than direct record.
In the aquarium
Crenicichla tuca is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is a recently described, narrow-range endemic that is rarely collected — the describers caught it only sparingly and always as lone individuals — and it appears in the hobby only as occasional, expensive wild imports passing through specialist pike-cichlid dealers rather than as an established, captive-bred species. There is no body of husbandry experience to draw on, and no documented spawning. Anyone who does obtain it should reason from its biology: it is a small (~6 in) pike from a clear, fast-flowing, rocky subtropical river, not a warm blackwater fish. That argues for a long tank with strong, well-oxygenated flow, a substrate of rounded stones, cobbles and flat rock arranged into the caves and crevices this crevice-hunter is built to exploit, and clear, clean, near-neutral and moderately soft to moderately hard water at cooler, seasonally variable subtropical temperatures (roughly the low-to-mid 20s °C) rather than tropical heat. Pike cichlids are predators and are best kept as a single mated pair or with robust, fast dither species too large to be treated as food; the long, slender fins and predatory temperament make peaceful or nippy tankmates a poor fit. Given the species' rarity and conservation profile, it is better regarded as a fish for serious specialists and public collections than a general community subject.
Conservation
Crenicichla tuca has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no CITES listing — its status is formally Not Evaluated, unsurprising for a species described only in 2015. That absence of an assessment should not be read as a sign of security. The fish is a single-river endemic confined to the lower Iguazú above the falls, a fauna already recognized as exceptionally distinctive and exceptionally vulnerable. The Iguazú basin is among the most heavily dammed in South America: a cascade of hydroelectric reservoirs has fragmented the river, drowned rapids and rocky reaches, and altered flow, while non-native species spread through the system. The fate of the closely related Crenicichla yaha — endemic to the neighbouring Urugua-í stream and not collected since a dam was built there in 1989 — is a pointed warning of how quickly a narrow-range Iguazú pike cichlid can vanish. Crenicichla tuca depends on exactly the clear-water, rocky-bottom habitat that impoundment destroys, so dam construction, habitat loss and introduced species are the realistic pressures on it, even though none has been formally quantified for this species.
