Taxonomy & naming
Crenicichla iguassuensis was described by the American naturalist John D. Haseman in 1911, in his annotated catalogue of the cichlid fishes collected by the Carnegie Museum expedition to central South America of 1907–1910. The holotype (FMNH 54159, a 5.5 in SL specimen now in the Field Museum, Chicago) was taken in the Rio Iguaçu at Porto União da Vitória, Paraná, Brazil — a point on the river that marks roughly the boundary between the lower and middle Iguaçu, well above the falls. The species has been stable in the literature ever since and carries no junior synonyms of its own, though it has repeatedly been confused with its smaller-mouthed neighbour Crenicichla tesay.
The genus Crenicichla (Heckel, 1840) is the large radiation of South American pike cichlids, and iguassuensis belongs to its southern, subtropical assemblage: the Crenicichla lacustris species group, and within that the Crenicichla mandelburgeri species complex. Casciotta (1987), in his multivariate analysis of the lacustris group, treated it alongside Crenicichla niederleinii, Crenicichla scottii, Crenicichla haroldoi, Crenicichla jupiaensis and Crenicichla celidochilus, noting that it is closely allied to Crenicichla niederleinii and that material referred to 'Crenicichla cf. iguassuensis' is morphologically heterogeneous and in need of further work. That work largely arrived with the molecular and morphological revision of the lower-Iguazú cichlids by Piálek, Dragová, Casciotta, Almirón & Říčan (2015), who recognised Crenicichla iguassuensis as one member of a sympatric quartet of pike cichlids — together with the small-mouthed picker Crenicichla tapii, the thick-lipped cavity-excavator Crenicichla tuca, and the molluscivore Crenicichla tesay — that constitutes an endemic Iguazú species flock. In their reading, iguassuensis is the large-mouthed, piscivorous form that represents the ancestral ecomorph of the flock, the body plan from which the more specialised feeders diverged. The same authors cautioned that the Argentine populations they assigned to the species form a separate clade in mitochondrial DNA and may eventually prove distinct, but the absence of fresh topotypic material from União da Vitória left the question open; their assignment is explicitly provisional.
Morphology
Crenicichla iguassuensis is a large, robust pike cichlid — among the bigger members of the lacustris group. FishBase lists a maximum of 13 in standard length (with a recorded weight to about 767 g), although the great majority of specimens examined in the revisionary work fall well below that; the 87 lower-Iguazú pike cichlids measured by Piálek and colleagues were mostly in the 3–6 in SL range, and the holotype itself is 5.5 in SL. The body is the typical pike-cichlid form: elongate, cylindrical anteriorly and laterally compressed toward the tail, built for the lie-in-wait ambush of an open-water predator.
The defining feature is the head. Crenicichla iguassuensis is large-mouthed with a prognathous (jutting) lower jaw and a long head — the 'predator' morphology that, within the Iguazú flock, contrasts sharply with the short-jawed, small-mouthed heads of Crenicichla tesay, Crenicichla tapii and Crenicichla tuca. Its lower pharyngeal tooth plate is correspondingly gracile and slender, set with numerous small unicuspid and crenulated bicuspid teeth — the unmodified, fish-eating condition, against which the molariform, mollusc-crushing plate of Crenicichla tesay stands out.
In colour the fish is grey to greenish or yellowish, the body densely covered in small irregular black dots, with a series of faint, broad vertical bars on the upper body and additional bars on the caudal peduncle. A suborbital (cheek) stripe is present but indistinct. Sexual dimorphism is real but subtle: the background colour tends toward grey in males and greenish-to-yellowish in females, both sexes are thoroughly spotted, and females coming into breeding condition develop a striking dorsal-fin pattern — a black band running along the posterior portion of the fin, ringed by a white margin. Males grow somewhat larger.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Rio Iguaçu basin above the Iguaçu Falls, a clear, cool, fast subtropical river of the upper Paraná system that forms part of the Brazil–Argentina border before its famous cataracts. Its core range lies in the Brazilian states of Paraná and Santa Catarina; the populations referred to it extend downstream into the lower Iguazú of Misiones Province, Argentina, although those Argentine fish are the ones whose specific identity remains under review. (The IUCN assessment also lists Mato Grosso do Sul, but every taxonomic treatment restricts the species to the Iguaçu drainage.) The Iguaçu Falls themselves are a hard biogeographic barrier: the fauna above them is highly endemic, and Crenicichla iguassuensis is part of that distinctive, isolated assemblage.
Within the basin it is, by the account of the revisers, a common and dominant pike cichlid — found both in the main channel of the lower Iguaçu and throughout its tributaries, and (per the Brazilian fisheries literature underpinning the Red List) abundant in the chain of hydroelectric reservoirs that now occupy much of the river. It occupies the typical Crenicichla niche of structured cover, over rocky and soft sediment-covered bottoms. The Iguaçu is a subtropical highland river: cooler and more seasonal than the Amazonian waters most pike cichlids inhabit, with soft, near-neutral, modestly mineralised water. Published in-situ chemistry specific to this species is sparse, so the figures in the fact box reflect the temperate-to-subtropical Iguaçu regime (roughly pH 6.5–7.5 and water temperatures of about 61–77 °F) rather than direct measurements at its capture sites; documented depth data are likewise lacking, and the shallow-river band recorded for it is an approximation.
Feeding
Crenicichla iguassuensis is a piscivore — the fish-eating specialist of the Iguazú pike-cichlid flock. Its long head, large prognathous mouth and slender, unmodified pharyngeal dentition are all the hardware of an ambush predator that seizes other fishes, and head and jaw morphology, field observations and stomach-content data all point the same way. The Brazilian ichthyological work cited by the IUCN (Baumgartner et al. 2012, on the fishes of the lower Iguaçu) describes its diet as primarily piscivorous, with crustaceans taken as an alternative and a shift toward micro- and macro-invertebrates in some settings, particularly in reservoirs where the prey base differs from that of the free-flowing river. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.3. In evolutionary terms its feeding role is pivotal: it represents the ancestral predatory ecomorph from which the flock's derived feeders — the small-mouthed pickers and grazers (Crenicichla tapii) and the molariform-toothed molluscivore (Crenicichla tesay) — diverged, a textbook case of trophic radiation within a confined river basin.
Mating
No detailed account of courtship or pair formation in Crenicichla iguassuensis has been published; what can be said is drawn from its reproductive seasonality and from the well-documented behaviour of its lacustris-group relatives. In the lower Iguaçu the reproductive period runs from October to December — the southern-hemisphere spring and early summer — and the Brazilian reservoir studies record fish maturing at modest sizes, around 3 in standard length in males and 3 in in females. Like other pike cichlids it is presumed to form monogamous pairs that establish and defend a territory before spawning, with the conspicuous black-and-white dorsal-fin pattern that breeding females develop functioning as a courtship and pair-bond signal. As a rule the genus is strongly territorial and intraspecifically aggressive in the run-up to spawning, with pairing a delicate business; there is no reason to think iguassuensis departs from that pattern, but the specifics await direct observation.
Breeding
The breeding biology of Crenicichla iguassuensis has not been described from the wild or, so far as the literature records, from aquaria. It is confidently placed, however, as a biparental substrate/cave spawner, in line with every studied member of the genus: pike cichlids of the lacustris group attach their eggs to a sheltered surface — the underside of a rock, a crevice, a hollow among submerged wood — and both parents guard the clutch and the resulting fry, the female tending the eggs while the male patrols the territory. Documented clutch sizes are not available for this species; congeneric lacustris-group pike cichlids of comparable size typically lay on the order of one to several hundred eggs (a genus-typical figure, not a measurement of iguassuensis), and the spawning falls within the October–December reproductive window recorded in the Iguaçu. Hatching and free-swimming schedules in the genus are quick — eggs of small to mid-sized Crenicichla generally hatch in about three to four days and the fry are free-swimming a few days later — but the precise figures for iguassuensis remain unrecorded.
In the aquarium
Crenicichla iguassuensis is essentially never seen in the aquarium trade. It has no established hobby presence, no commercial use is recorded for it, and it is not a fish a keeper is likely to encounter for sale; what follows is therefore husbandry inferred from its biology and from the keeping of its lacustris-group relatives, not a record of common practice with this species.
If it were kept, it would need to be treated as a large, predatory, subtropical pike cichlid. A fish that can approach 12 in and lives by ambushing other fishes demands a long tank — on the order of 71 in / six feet or more for an adult or a pair — with abundant structure. The genus-keepers' near-universal advice applies: provide plenty of cave-like retreats (lengths of wide PVC pipe are the unglamorous standard, along with rockwork and bogwood), because pike cichlids feel secure only when they can bolt into cover, and the cover also defuses the intense aggression that otherwise builds among them. Unlike most of its tropical congeners, this is a cool-water fish from a highland river; it should be kept noticeably cooler than the 79–86 °F typical of Amazonian pikes, in roughly the high-teens to low-twenties Celsius, in soft, near-neutral water with good current and high oxygen. It would eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, so companions must be large; and conspecifics would need a big, broken-up tank and careful watching, as pairing in this genus can turn lethal. None of this is a recommendation to seek the fish out — it is a regionally important wild animal, not an aquarium subject — but it is what responsible care would require.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla iguassuensis as Least Concern, in an assessment by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), assessed 7 November 2018 and published in 2022 (reviewer P. Reis). The justification is that the species is widely distributed within the Iguaçu basin, where it is frequent and abundant — including in the river's reservoirs — and that no significant threats to its population have been detected; the population trend is recorded as stable. It carries no CITES listing, and it occurs within protected areas including Iguaçu National Park and the Ilhas e Várzeas do Rio Paraná Environmental Protection Area. The assessment notes that population-trend and life-history studies are still needed.
That reassuring verdict should be read against the state of the river itself. The Iguaçu above the falls is one of the most heavily dammed rivers in South America — a near-continuous cascade of large hydroelectric reservoirs (Salto Santiago, Salto Osório, Salto Caxias and others) that has converted long reaches of free-flowing river into still water and fragmented the fauna. Recent ichthyological surveys emphasise that the last dam-free stretches and their tributaries are the critical refuges for the basin's many endemic fishes, and that non-native species are an added pressure. Crenicichla iguassuensis appears to be one of the relative winners of this transformed system, tolerating and even thriving in the reservoirs where more specialised endemics decline — but its security rests on a river whose ecology has been profoundly and permanently altered, and the same cannot be said for all of its flock-mates.
