Taxonomy & naming
The name labrina was coined in 1831 by Johann Baptist von Spix and Louis Agassiz in their monograph on the fishes Spix collected during the Bavarian expedition to Brazil, where the species was described as Cichla labrina — Cichla then being a catch-all for many South American cichlids before Heckel split the pike cichlids into Crenicichla in 1840. The original material was a single specimen collected by Spix's expedition partner Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, its locality vaguely given as "Mari Brasiliae." The epithet refers to the fish's notably thick lips, which Spix and Agassiz singled out in the Latin phrase "labris crassissimis." Sources cite the publication date as either 1829 or 1831, reflecting the protracted appearance of the monograph's parts; 1831 is the date now used by FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes.
For much of the twentieth century labrina was treated as a junior synonym of Crenicichla saxatilis, the type species of the saxatilis species group. That changed in 1986, when Alfred Ploeg, working through INPA collections made on the Tocantins ahead of the Tucuruí Dam, removed labrina from synonymy and redescribed it. Because several Amazonian pike cichlids matched the brief original account and the lectotype had faded past useful comparison, Ploeg chose to conserve the established name rather than describe a new species, and restricted the type locality to the Tocantins River north of Itupiranga, in the State of Pará. Crenicichla jaguarensis Haseman, 1911 is treated as a junior synonym. FishBase attributes the current concept of the species to Kullander's 2003 checklist treatment.
Within the genus, labrina belongs to the saxatilis group, the assemblage of medium-sized, white-spotted pike cichlids whose members are so morphologically similar that Ploeg found the morphometric differences separating labrina, saxatilis, alta and albopunctata to be very slight, with locality and colour pattern doing much of the diagnostic work. A 2023 integrative phylogeny of the pike cichlids by Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández reorganised the group's classification and erected a new genus, Saxatilia, for the saxatilis assemblage — so labrina now also appears in the literature as Saxatilia labrina. That arrangement is still settling into general use; the trade and most databases continue to list the fish under Crenicichla, the heading retained here.
Morphology
Crenicichla labrina is a medium-sized pike cichlid with the elongate, cylindrical, slightly compressed body and pointed, large-mouthed head typical of the genus. The largest specimen Ploeg examined measured 6.5 in in standard length, and FishBase gives a maximum of about 6.5 in SL — modest by the standards of a genus whose largest members exceed 12 in. The thick lips that gave the fish its name are its most quotable feature.
In preserved material Ploeg described a humeral spot set just behind the gill cover, from which a faint lateral band runs back to the caudal-fin base, where a discrete black spot sits. Dark stripes cross the head before, below and behind the eye (the preorbital, suborbital and postorbital stripes that are standard furniture in the saxatilis group), and roughly eight vague dark vertical bars cross the back above the lateral band. Small white dots speckle the upper flanks — the "spangling" that runs through this group of pikes — and become more conspicuous in life. As in other pike cichlids, sexual dimorphism is expected to follow the genus pattern: females develop a flush of colour and a dark-edged ocellus or markings in the dorsal fin when in breeding condition, while males grow somewhat larger and longer-finned. Spawning condition is the most reliable way to sex them.
Habitat
Crenicichla labrina is restricted to the lower Tocantins River basin in the eastern Amazon drainage of Pará, Brazil — a genuinely narrow range for a pike cichlid, and one of the things that distinguishes it from its wide-ranging relative saxatilis. Ploeg recorded it through much of the lower Tocantins, from the market town of Cametá upriver toward Itupiranga, the stretch surveyed in the early 1980s during the impact assessment for the Tucuruí hydroelectric dam. It shares this river with a striking diversity of congeners — among them Crenicichla johanna, Crenicichla lugubris, Crenicichla reticulata, C. notophthalma and the dwarf Crenicichla compressiceps — a richness of pike cichlids that makes the lower Tocantins one of the genus's hotspots.
These are warm, lowland clear-to-whitewater rivers. FishBase places the species in a tropical regime of roughly 75–81 °F and lists a pH around neutral (to about 7.0) with hardness in the order of 10–25 dGH, figures consistent with the moderately mineralised waters of the Tocantins rather than the soft blackwater of the Rio Negro. No specific in-situ depth was published for the species; like other saxatilis-group pikes it is a benthopelagic fish of structured margins, holding station among rock, submerged wood and root tangles in relatively shallow, well-oxygenated water close to shore, and the documented collecting habitat is the shallow littoral band of a large river rather than its deep channel.
Feeding
Like virtually all pike cichlids, Crenicichla labrina is a carnivore built for ambush. The elongate body, large terminal mouth and pointed snout are the toolkit of a lie-in-wait predator that lunges from cover at passing prey. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.3, placing it among the more generalised predators of the genus rather than the extreme large-prey specialists; the thick lips that name the fish are a feature seen in several pike cichlids that work rocky substrates, where they may help in taking prey from crevices. The expected wild diet is the standard pike-cichlid menu — smaller fishes, shrimps and other crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae and other benthic invertebrates — gleaned from the rock-and-wood structure of the river margin. In its community it functions as a mid-level littoral predator, one of a whole guild of co-occurring Crenicichla species that partition the Tocantins's prey by size, microhabitat and hunting style.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Crenicichla labrina has not been documented in the wild, but pike cichlids are remarkably consistent in how they pair and breed, and the genus pattern can be stated with confidence. Crenicichla form monogamous pairs that hold a territory together. Pair formation is a deliberate, sometimes fraught affair: a male and female assess one another through lateral displays, fin-spreading and jaw-to-jaw sparring before a stable bond settles, and an ill-matched introduction can turn violently one-sided. Once bonded, both fish defend a territory centred on a spawning shelter, with the larger male patrolling the perimeter and the female working closer to the chosen site. Females of the saxatilis group signal readiness with intensified colour and the dark-bordered marks that bloom in the dorsal fin, and courtship leads directly into substrate spawning within that defended space.
Breeding
No wild or aquarium spawning has been published specifically for Crenicichla labrina, but its congeners are well-studied biparental cave and crevice spawners, and the species is expected to follow suit. In the saxatilis group the pair selects a sheltered surface — the roof or wall of a rock cave, an undercut, a hollow among roots or submerged wood — and the female attaches a clutch of adhesive eggs there while the male defends the surrounding territory. Documented clutches in similarly sized congeners run on the order of a few hundred eggs (a genus-typical figure of roughly 100–500 is reasonable for a fish of this size). The female tends and fans the eggs through incubation; once the young are free-swimming, both parents guard the school closely, shepherding the fry back into the shelter of cover at any threat and continuing to defend them for some weeks. Warmth, clean water and a rich supply of live food are the usual triggers that bring such pikes into breeding condition.
In the aquarium
Crenicichla labrina is essentially an ichthyologist's fish rather than an aquarium-trade staple: it is rarely if ever distinguished and exported under its own name, and most of what reaches hobbyists from the lower Tocantins arrives as mixed or trade-named saxatilis-group pikes. That said, its needs would mirror those of the other medium-sized pike cichlids that hobbyists do keep, and the husbandry can be stated honestly on that basis.
A single fish or an established pair of a roughly 6.5 in pike wants a long tank — on the order of 47 in (about 90–105 US gal) or more — with the footprint mattering far more than the height. The decisive feature is hard structure: stacked rock forming caves and crevices, plus driftwood and root tangles, arranged to break the floor into defensible territories and sightline-blocking refuges. A sand or fine-gravel substrate suits a fish that holds close to the bottom. Water should track the species' warm, near-neutral Tocantins origins — about 77–82 °F, pH around 6.5–7.5, and moderate hardness; soft, very acidic blackwater conditions are not required and not what this river offers. Strong biological filtration and steady water changes keep these large-bodied predators in good order.
The behavioural realities are the usual pike-cichlid ones. Crenicichla labrina is a predator and will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, so companions must be too large to be prey and robust enough to stand their ground without being targets themselves — larger, fast characins and other sturdy, non-cichlid midwater fish are the safest neighbours. The most acute risk is intraspecific: an unbonded male and female confined together can fight to injury, so pairs are best formed in a large, heavily structured tank that lets a subordinate fish retreat, ideally with a divider on hand. Feeding is straightforward — a varied carnivore diet of frozen and live foods (earthworms, prawn, fish and insect larvae) and good sinking pellets, with the standard caution against relying on feeder fish, which carry disease and offer poor nutrition.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla labrina as Least Concern, in an assessment carried out in 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2022; the assessment describes the species as frequent though not abundant. It carries no CITES listing and is not a target of commercial fisheries or the ornamental trade in any significant way. The principal caveat is its narrow range. Confined to the lower Tocantins, Crenicichla labrina lives in a river that has been heavily engineered — the Tucuruí Dam, completed in the mid-1980s and the very project whose impact surveys yielded the specimens Ploeg used to redescribe the species, transformed long stretches of the lower Tocantins from flowing river into reservoir. Damming, the continued expansion of hydropower and infrastructure in the eastern Amazon, deforestation and shifting flow and sediment regimes are the kind of basin-scale pressures that bear on a habitat-restricted endemic, even where no decline has yet been documented. As a single-river species, labrina is inherently more exposed to local habitat change than its broadly distributed relatives.
