Taxonomy & naming
The spadetail checkerboard was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1875, who built the new genus Dicrossus around it; maculatus is therefore the type species of the genus. His material came from a scatter of localities in the lower Amazon of Brazil — Lake Maximo, Lake José Assú, the Rio Tonantins, the Rio Javari ("River Hyavary") and the Rio Tajapuru — and the syntype series is split among the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard (MCZ 14885–91), the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NMW 77916) and the Smithsonian (USNM 120404). The genus had a turbulent first century. Regan (1905) sank Dicrossus into the related checkerboard genus Crenicara, and most authors followed him for decades (Ahl 1936; Ladiges 1959; Kullander 1978). It was Sven O. Kullander who, in 1990, re-examined the group and revalidated Dicrossus as distinct, pointing to the serrated posterior margin of the preopercle that it shares with Crenicara while keeping the two genera apart. Kullander's 2003 checklist of South and Central American freshwater fishes lists maculatus as valid and confirms its lower-Amazon distribution. Dicrossus sits in the eartheater subfamily (Geophaginae of FishBase; Cichlinae more broadly), and Kullander (1998) placed it in a small tribe Crenicarini alongside Crenicara, Biotoecus and Mazarunia — a grouping the molecular phylogeny of López-Fernández et al. (2005) did not recover as monophyletic, though it consistently returns Dicrossus and Crenicara as sister taxa. A persistent source of confusion is that the name maculatus was for many years applied loosely to the popular lyretail checkerboard, the fish now called Dicrossus filamentosus; only the genus revision of the late twentieth century clarified that the true maculatus is the larger, spade-tailed lower-Amazon species.
Morphology
This is a small, slender, laterally compressed dwarf cichlid with an elongate head and a subterminal mouth. Size reports vary sharply with the source, in part because of the long-standing mix-up with Dicrossus filamentosus: FishBase gives a maximum of 2 in standard length for males and about 2.5 in for females, figures close to the congeners, while aquarists who keep the genuine spadetail consistently grow much larger fish — Goldring (Cichlid Room Companion) records males of 4–4.5 in and females of 2 in total length, so that males are roughly twice the length of females. The ground colour is a warm yellow-tan, paler below and duskier above, overlaid by the pattern that names the group: two longitudinal series of dark, squarish-to-rectangular blotches — one along the midflank, one along the back — set out like the squares of a checkerboard. Sexual dimorphism is marked and is the key to telling the species apart. The mature male's caudal fin is drawn out into a single pointed spade or diamond shape (not the forked lyre-tail of filamentosus, nor the one-sided streamer of the Colombian gladicauda), and that tail carries vertical rows of small red-flecked spots that the female lacks. Males also grow long, pointed ventral fins bearing an iridescent blue line along the leading edge, a tall dorsal fin, and a more elongated snout — keepers describe females as "cuter," with a shorter snout and proportionately larger eye. A non-spawning female shows dull orange to orange-red ventral fins; when she comes into spawning condition those fins switch to lemon-yellow edged with a bold black bar, a signal she uses to guard eggs and herd fry.
Habitat
Dicrossus maculatus is endemic to the lower and central Amazon basin of Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes and FishBase fix its range in the Tapajós River drainage, the Rio Maués, and the area around Parintins on the lower Amazon mainstem, with the type localities scattered through the lower-Amazon floodplain lakes and tributaries. (Records and trade fish attributed to the Rio Negro and the Orinoco of Colombia and Venezuela almost always refer to Dicrossus filamentosus or to undescribed Dicrossus forms, not to true maculatus.) Its habitat is classic Amazonian blackwater: slow, very warm, soft and strongly acidic streams stained tea-brown with tannins, floored with leaf litter, fallen branches and other decaying organic debris. Hobbyists who have traced the species to its source describe water in the low-to-mid 80s Fahrenheit (about 82–86 °F) and a pH well below neutral; FishBase's environmental envelope of pH 4.8–6.0 and 72–77 °F captures the acidity but understates the warmth that field and breeding accounts emphasise. A separate literature estimate for the general habitat type shared with the ecologically similar Crenicara punctulata puts the water at pH 4.5–5 with hardness usually below 1 °dGH — near the acidic, essentially unbuffered end of FishBase's range, and consistent with it. The closely related Dicrossus gladicauda, in comparable Orinoco blackwater, was collected by Schindler and Staeck (2008) in extremely shallow water — roughly 4–19.5 in deep, among dead leaves and submerged marginal vegetation at pH 4.4, conductivity around 10 µS/cm and near-zero hardness — a useful proxy for the kind of shallow, shaded leaf-litter band the spadetail occupies. Notably, live aquatic plants are essentially absent from its natural waters; the structure is wood and drowned leaves, not weed. Field surveys in the Tapajós system found the species skewed heavily toward juveniles in situ — small (1 in), solitary fish over leaf litter in shallow water near the banks, with larger adults comparatively rare to encounter — a pattern also reported for other, geographically separated Dicrossus populations sharing the same drainage.
Feeding
Like other small Dicrossus, the spadetail is a micro-predator of the leaf litter, working the bed of decaying leaves and fine sediment for tiny invertebrates, crustaceans, insect larvae and the associated organic particles. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with a small carnivore rather than a detritus-grazer. In the aquarium it is described as an unfussy feeder that takes small live and frozen foods readily, and fry are observed browsing constantly through leaf litter for the microorganisms it harbours — a reminder that the litter is as much a pantry as a shelter in its native streams. There is no published wild gut-content study for the species, so this account leans on its trophic estimate and on consistent keeper observation; in the community it functions as one of the small bottom-oriented insectivores of the shaded blackwater margins.
Mating
The spadetail checkerboard is not a pair-bonding fish but a harem (polygynous) spawner, and getting its social structure right is the crux of keeping it. A single male holds and shows off over a loose group of females; in the wild and in roomy aquaria he courts each in turn rather than forming a lasting pair. Courtship is a vivid affair of fin display — the male yawns, flares his surprisingly tall dorsal fin, fans out the spade-shaped tail and shivers his long ventral fins in a kind of dance, taking on a dark-above, pale-below pattern as he does so. Females respond by waving their tails and curving the body, and exchanges can turn rough enough that fish look battered afterward. Because a male will spawn with a different female every couple of days, a well-stocked tank can have several females guarding clutches within a single week — and a freshly spawned female, fiercely territorial, will drive the male off and may kill him outright if he cannot escape. Keepers therefore favour one male to two or three females with cover and dither fish, and keep spare males on hand. An added wrinkle is that both wild and captive groups skew heavily male in the trade, and sexing juveniles is genuinely difficult, so assembling a working harem is half the battle.
Breeding
Dicrossus maculatus is a female-led open substrate spawner with predominantly maternal brood care. The female alone selects and cleans the spawning site — a broad leaf (living Anubias or a dead oak leaf), driftwood, or sometimes a sponge filter or uplift tube — leads the male to it, and lays 100 to 150 ivory-coloured eggs on its surface for him to fertilise. What happens to the male immediately afterward is genuinely unsettled between sources: published harem-breeding guidance describes him staying on to defend the perimeter around the spawning site rather than being ejected outright, recommending his removal only if the tank lacks other "dither" fish to occupy his attention — implying he is ordinarily left in place. Keeper accounts of this species tell a harsher story, though: a freshly spawned female is fiercely territorial and, unable to escape, a male risks real injury or death from her. Both pictures are plausible and are flagged here rather than reconciled — a cautious keeper should assume the male may need to be pulled and watch for aggression rather than count on him being welcome to stay. The female positions herself close to the clutch as its primary guardian regardless. The chosen site shapes her behaviour: on a fixed leaf she patrols and defends a wide radius, but when she spawns on a detached, drifting leaf she becomes a "mobile platform" brooder, carrying the leaf of eggs around with her. Eggs hatch in two to three days and the wrigglers, initially tethered to the surface by a fine head-thread, are piled and tended by the female until they are free-swimming a further three to four days later. The species' great difficulty is the egg itself: keepers report that in hard, high-pH water the egg shell thickens until fry cannot break out, so that spawns vanish unhatched. Success comes only in soft, aged, strongly acidic water — Goldring records fry raised at a pH near 3–4, where acidity both lets the eggs hatch and suppresses fungus. Once free-swimming, the fry are steered and signalled by the mother's black-and-yellow ventral fins; they feed first on microorganisms in the leaf litter, then on baby brine shrimp, microworms and powdered fry foods, growing slowly to 1 in over about three months. A female will not re-spawn while raising a brood.
In the aquarium
The spadetail checkerboard is a connoisseur's dwarf cichlid: peaceful, striking and full of personality, but hard to find, hard to sex and hard to breed. It is not a beginner's fish, and most keepers who succeed do so by reproducing its blackwater stream rather than fighting it.
A harem of one male and two or three females wants a footprint of at least a 20-gallon "long" (about 20 US gal) — larger if the group is bigger — heavily furnished with driftwood, root tangles and, above all, a thick bed of decaying leaf litter (oak, beech, catappa). Live plants such as Anubias are appreciated even though they are absent from the wild habitat, and they double as spawning sites; the tank should be dimly lit and tannin-stained. Add a school of small, peaceful, top-swimming dither fish — pencilfish or small tetras such as neons — to draw out the females' protective behaviour and give them a target other than the male.
Water is the whole game. These fish come from warm, soft, acidic blackwater, and while adults will live happily in clearer, harder, near-neutral water (a planted community at pH 7.5 and ~13 dKH will keep them in good colour and even induce spawning), their eggs will not hatch there. For breeding, the water must be soft, well-aged and strongly acidic — a pH in the low 6s at most, and successful breeders run it far lower, into the 3–5 range using rainwater or RO cut with peat, oak leaves and botanicals. Keep them warm: around 82–86 °F (low-to-mid 80s °F). Many experienced keepers deliberately do not measure pH once a blackwater tank is mature, to avoid the temptation to "correct" it with disruptive water changes.
The common mistakes are predictable: trying to keep them as a single "pair" (they don't pair-bond, and a lone female rarely raises fry because the male soon harasses her into re-spawning); buying "pairs" that turn out to be two males, since imports skew male and juveniles are easily mis-sexed; and attempting to breed in tap water, where the eggs simply never hatch. Keep them as a harem in soft acidic water, give the females room and cover, and be patient — the reward is one of the more beautiful and behaviourally rich of all the South American dwarves.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Dicrossus maculatus as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out in 2018 (published 2022) by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), with the population trend listed as unknown; the species carries no CITES or CMS listing and is regarded as harmless. It is collected for the ornamental trade but only in modest numbers — FishBase notes it is rare in the aquarium trade — and the assessment does not flag harvest as a population-level threat. As a small endemic of the lower and central Amazon, however, it shares the broad pressures bearing on Amazonian blackwater streams: deforestation of riparian forest (which supplies the leaf litter and shade its biotope depends on), changes to flood-pulse and water chemistry, and the spread of mining, agriculture and damming through the basin. None of these is documented as a specific danger to this particular cichlid, but they are the backdrop against which the comfortable "Least Concern" label for a narrowly distributed blackwater specialist should be read.
