Taxonomy & naming
Cichla pinima was formally described by Sven O. Kullander and Efrem J. G. Ferreira in their 2006 monograph "A review of the South American cichlid genus Cichla, with descriptions of nine new species" (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 17(4): 289–398) — the same study that resolved a long-standing tangle of peacock bass populations into fifteen species. The species epithet comes from a Tupi-Guarani adjective meaning "spotted with white," used in apposition; the describers proposed tucunaré pinima as its Brazilian name, and English-speaking hobbyists and anglers know it as the spotted or pinima peacock bass.
The holotype, an adult male of 12 in standard length (INPA 691), was collected on 6 February 1983 by E. J. G. Ferreira at kilometer 30 of the Rio Curuá-Una in Pará, Brazil, and is held at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia in Manaus. The type series was unusually large — roughly 400 paratypes spanning 1–20.5 in SL — which let the authors describe how the fish's pattern changes from a spotted juvenile to a barred adult. Within Cichla, pinima sits in the lineage of large, spot-flanked species that includes Cichla temensis, Cichla jariina, Cichla thyrorus and Cichla vazzoleri; telling these apart from preserved or photographed fish is genuinely difficult, and "Cichla cf. pinima" appears throughout the literature for populations from peripheral rivers that may or may not belong here.
Morphology
Pinima follows the classic peacock-bass blueprint: an elongate, deep-shouldered, powerfully built body, a large mouth with a projecting lower jaw, a notched dorsal fin, and — on the tail base — the ocellus, a dark eyespot ringed in pale gold that gives the genus its "peacock" name. Flanks are typically golden to yellowish, and the fish carries three principal vertical bars.
What marks pinima out is its ontogenetic pattern shift. Subadults and large females show four or more horizontal rows of light spots along the side; adults replace those with bold black, light-margined vertical bars or blotches. The single most useful field mark, per the original description, is an ocellated dark blotch set dorsally in the third bar — present in pinima but absent in Cichla temensis and only variably expressed in its other close relatives. Scale counts in the E1 row run about 86–105 (usually under 100), the lateral line is commonly interrupted rather than continuous, and breeding fish develop three ocellated bars. These are fine distinctions: separating pinima from Cichla vazzoleri or a large Cichla temensis often comes down to overlapping scale counts and the presence or absence of abdominal spot rows.
Size is where sources genuinely diverge. FishBase lists a maximum of about 20.5 in SL, and the type series topped out near 20.5 in SL — yet experienced keepers and Amazon anglers routinely describe pinima as one of the larger peacocks, reporting fish in the 10–12 lb class and growth rates rivaling Cichla temensis. The honest read: pinima is a big fish that, in the right water, approaches the size of the largest peacock bass, even if formally measured maxima sit lower.
Habitat
Cichla pinima is endemic to Brazil. Its native range lies along the lower reaches of the southern (right-bank) tributaries of the Amazon: the lower Rio Tapajós, Rio Curuá-Una and lower Rio Xingu, plus the lower Rio Tocantins, Rio Capim and Rio Teles Pires. Tentatively identified populations from the Amapá, Araguari, Arapiuns and Canumã rivers may also belong here, reflecting how hard the species is to pin down at its edges.
The fish has also been moved around by people. Kullander and Ferreira recorded it translocated into the Rio Paraguaçu of eastern Brazil, and the IUCN assessment notes established introduced populations in the northeast — in Bahia and Ceará — most likely seeded through reservoir stocking for sport fishing. This is the same water body context the rest of our Amazon coverage uses: a vast, seasonally pulsed basin of clearwater rivers draining the Brazilian Shield (the Tapajós and Xingu are classic clearwater systems) alongside more turbid whitewater channels. Pinima is a benthopelagic freshwater fish that favors flowing, structured habitat — submerged wood, rocky shoals and shoreline drop-offs — rather than the still blackwater lagoons where some of its relatives concentrate.
Feeding
Pinima is a true piscivore and, like all Cichla, an apex or near-apex predator in its stretch of river. Peacock bass are primarily diurnal, visual hunters that ambush and pursue smaller fish in clear, well-lit water and rarely feed at night — a trait that shapes both where they live and how anglers catch them. Prey is typically seized and swallowed whole; stomach analyses across the genus are dominated by other fishes.
That predatory efficiency is exactly why introduced Cichla draw concern. A review of introduced peacock bass (Sastraprawira et al., Heliyon 2020) describes the genus as a voracious predator with rapid development — embryos hatching in roughly 72 hours and fish maturing in about 11–12 months — that can gain territorial control of a water body and depress native fish where it is stocked outside its range. Within its native rivers, by contrast, pinima is one predator among many in a diverse, co-evolved community, and its role there is unremarkable in the sense that the system is built around such hunters.
Mating
Like other peacock bass, pinima is a substrate-spawning, biparental cichlid rather than a mouthbrooder, and the run-up to spawning is keyed to the seasonal cycle — generally October to May, ahead of and into the Neotropical rains. As the season turns, a pair forms and selects and cleans a hard surface to serve as the spawning site. Breeding males of larger Cichla develop a pronounced nuchal hump on the forehead, and pinima assumes an intensified breeding coloration with three ocellated bars, the clearest outward sign that a fish has shifted from foraging to reproduction.
Outside breeding, peacock bass are social and often move in loose groups, but they are also strongly territorial, and aggression spikes around nesting. This combination — gregarious yet quick to fight — is the behavioral signature that drives pair-formation and the defense of a chosen site, and it is what keepers have to plan around.
Breeding
Once the pair has cleaned its hard surface, the female lays adhesive eggs in rows and the male follows to fertilize them — the classic open-substrate spawn of the genus. Both parents then guard the eggs and the free-swimming young, commonly taking turns and fasting through the effort; the male is often described as the more devoted guard, shepherding dense schools of fry through the shallows.
Development is fast, in keeping with the genus's reputation: across Cichla, embryos hatch in roughly 72 hours and fish reach maturity in about 11–12 months. The brood is defended actively against the same crowd of predators the parents themselves belong to, and the biparental guarding of mobile fry schools — rather than any nest-bound or mouthbrooding strategy — is the reproductive hallmark of the peacock bass.
In the aquarium
Pinima is firmly a specialist's fish, not a beginner cichlid. It is sold in the trade — often aquacultured and weaned onto frozen and prepared foods — under names like "pinima peacock bass," and the small juveniles are deceptively easy. The problem is what they become: a fast-growing, large, openly predatory cichlid that needs serious space. Long-time peacock keepers are blunt that even an eight-foot tank is marginal for an adult, and that Cichla are best kept in groups to diffuse aggression rather than singly. A footprint measured in feet, not inches, plus heavy filtration to handle a messy carnivore's waste, is the baseline.
Water should be warm and soft to neutral; community lore on the forums insists peacock bass do poorly in hard, alkaline water and want a pH below 7, consistent with their soft-water river origins. They are visual hunters with big appetites, and the common mistake is overfeeding, which fouls the tank and can trigger regurgitation. Tankmates must be large, robust and not bite-sized — anything that fits in the mouth is food. None of this is a reason to avoid the fish; it is a reason to be honest that pinima is a long-term commitment in a large, well-managed system, and that most home aquaria are simply too small for it.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Cichla pinima as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), last assessed on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022, with a stable population trend. The justification is straightforward: the species is endemic to Brazil but widely distributed across the lower Tapajós, Xingu, Tocantins, Capim and Teles Pires drainages, is frequent and abundant, and supports recreational and food fisheries without any significant threat to its populations having been detected. There is no targeted conservation program and no record of the species inside a protected area, but none is currently judged necessary.
That clean status should be read against the broader strain on the southern Amazon tributaries it inhabits, rather than as a sign all is well basin-wide. These clearwater rivers — the Tapajós, Xingu and Tocantins in particular — have been heavily dammed; the Belo Monte complex on the lower Xingu and dams on the Tocantins and Teles Pires fragment habitat and alter the flow and flood pulses that Amazon fishes are tuned to. As the wider Neotropical literature documents (Kullander, in the 2003 Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America, and Lowe-McConnell's work on tropical fish communities), the dominant pressures on Amazon cichlids are habitat change, damming and ornamental or food-fish collection rather than population collapse. Pinima itself adds a twist: where it has been stocked outside its range, in northeastern Brazil, it becomes the threat — an introduced predator that can disrupt native fish communities. So the accurate summary is that the species is secure and even expanding, while the rivers it came from are under real and growing pressure.
