Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis argens was described in 2013 by Jetske A. F. de Zeeuw, Mirte Westbroek and Frans Witte, continuing the long Leiden tradition (Naturalis, growing out of the former Haplochromis Ecology Survey Team) of documenting Lake Victoria's haplochromine diversity, in this case among the pelagic zooplanktivore assemblage during the lake's partial post-crash recovery. The CARES Preservation Program lists the species under the historical satellite-genus combination Yssichromis argens — Yssichromis being the genus Greenwood erected in 1980 for a group of small, slender, silvery, open-water zooplanktivores that includes the well-studied Y. pyrrhocephalus, in which researchers have documented rapid evolutionary changes in eye size and gill surface area linked to the chronic low-oxygen conditions that developed in Lake Victoria's degraded, eutrophic waters after the Nile perch crash. Catalog of Fishes currently retains H. argens within the broad genus Haplochromis, as with most of the flock, pending a comprehensive phylogenetic revision. The epithet argens, from Latin argenteus ('silvery'), plausibly describes the bright, largely unmarked silvery flank colouration typical of this pelagic guild.
Morphology
A verified maximum length and detailed morphometric account specific to Haplochromis argens are not confirmed in the sources available here — data sparse. Conservation
