Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis annectidens was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1933, in the Journal of the Linnean Society (Zoology), from material collected at Lake Nabugabo in what is now southern Uganda. The holotype (Natural History Museum, London, BMNH 1933.2.23.210) and a series of paratypes anchor the name; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid as Haplochromis annectidens Trewavas 1933. The species was later treated in detail by P. H. Greenwood in his 1965 monograph 'The cichlid fishes of Lake Nabugabo, Uganda,' the standard reference for the lake's small endemic flock.
The fish belongs to the enormous Lake Victoria region haplochromine assemblage — a 'superflock' of several hundred closely related, recently evolved species that radiated across Victoria and its satellite lakes (Nabugabo, Kyoga and others). Within that radiation Nabugabo's haplochromines are not strict single-lake endemics in the evolutionary sense but a young offshoot of the Victoria stock, Nabugabo itself having been cut off from the main lake by a sand bar only a few thousand years ago. Generic limits in this group are notoriously unsettled. The traditional catch-all genus Haplochromis has been progressively dismantled, and many of the Victoria/Nabugabo mouthbrooders of this body plan are now placed by some authors in Astatotilapia. That reassignment has not been formally applied to annectidens in a way that has displaced the long-standing combination, so the name Haplochromis annectidens remains in current use and is retained here; readers will also encounter the fish discussed under Astatotilapia in the wider literature on the flock.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of 2.5 in standard length, and like most members of the Victoria flock it is a slender, laterally compressed, perch-shaped fish rather than a deep-bodied one. Detailed colour notes for live annectidens are sparse in the accessible literature, which is itself telling — these small brownish haplochromines were historically lumped and under-illustrated, and no photograph is carried on its FishBase page. In the flock generally, females and non-breeding fish are a cryptic silvery-brown to olive, often with faint vertical bars or a midlateral blotch series, while breeding males develop brighter nuptial colour and the egg-spot-like ocelli on the anal fin that are characteristic of haplochromine courtship.
The feature Trewavas singled out was the dentition. She named the fish annectidens — roughly 'connecting teeth' — because she interpreted its tooth form as the ancestral or intermediate condition from which two Lake Victoria species, Haplochromis obliquidens and Haplochromis plagiodon, appeared to have diverged in opposite directions. In other words, the diagnostic morphology is in the jaws and teeth rather than in flashy external markings. Sexual dimorphism follows the haplochromine norm — males are the more colourful sex and bear anal-fin ocelli, females are plainer and do the mouthbrooding — but precise dimorphism notes specific to this species are not well documented.
Habitat
Haplochromis annectidens is known only from Lake Nabugabo, a small, shallow freshwater lake (only a few metres deep) lying just west of Lake Victoria in Uganda's Masaka region. The lake was severed from Victoria by a sand spit roughly 4,000 years ago and has been a natural laboratory for cichlid evolution ever since. Within it, annectidens is a fish of the shallow lake margins: FishBase records that it occurs mainly in the vicinity of, or among, marginal vegetation and only rarely ventures over exposed sandy beaches away from rooted plants. It does not push deep into the fringing papyrus and Miscanthidium swamp, and is seldom taken at the swamp ends of inlets — it is a creature of the vegetated nearshore proper, not the swamp interior.
Nabugabo's water is soft, dilute and only weakly buffered. In-situ measurements at the lake report electrical conductivity around 27–33 µS/cm, total hardness near 32 mg/L as CaCO3, low alkalinity (~29 mg/L), and a near-neutral pH around 7.1, with warm tropical surface temperatures (recorded into the high twenties to ~86 °F). FishBase classes the species as benthopelagic in a tropical freshwater setting at roughly 0–1°S. These are very different conditions from the hard, alkaline Rift lakes: Nabugabo is the soft, tannin-influenced, equatorial water typical of the Victoria basin's satellite lakes. Because the lake is shallow throughout and the fish keeps to the weedy littoral, its working depth is effectively the top few metres of the water column.
Feeding
Gut-content work summarised in the CLOFFA checklist describes the typical stomach of Haplochromis annectidens as a barely recognisable mush of plant debris — both algal and phanerogamic (from flowering aquatic plants) — with blue-green algae predominating, mixed with Diptera (midge and other fly) larvae, plant epidermis, diatoms and filamentous green algae. That places it as a small generalist grazer-detritivore working the vegetated margins: it rasps and ingests epiphytic and benthic algae and soft plant material and takes the insect larvae that live among the weed. FishBase estimates a low trophic level of about 2.0, consistent with a largely plant- and detritus-based diet rather than a predatory one.
In the structure of the Victoria-region flock, this kind of small algae-and-insect feeder is a common 'guild' — many sympatric haplochromines partition the inshore habitat by exactly such fine differences in diet and tooth form, which is part of why the assemblage became so species-rich. Annectidens occupies the nearshore grazer niche rather than the rock-scraping, snail-crushing or fish-eating extremes seen elsewhere in the radiation.
Mating
No courtship study specific to Haplochromis annectidens has been published in the sources available, so its mating behaviour must be read from the well-documented pattern of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock to which it belongs. In these fish reproduction is polygynandrous and built around male display rather than pair bonds. Mature males take on nuptial colour and present their flanks and anal-fin ocelli to passing females, quivering and leading them over a small display area; the bright 'egg-spots' on the male's anal fin are thought to function as a lek-style visual lure during spawning. Mate choice by the female, heavily dependent on male colour and on water clarity, is considered one of the engines of the flock's explosive speciation — where turbidity blurs colour signals, species boundaries blur too.
There is no lasting territory or biparental defence: once a female has spawned and taken up the eggs, the male's role ends and he moves on to court again. For a small grazing species of the weedy margins like annectidens, courtship presumably takes place in or near that marginal vegetation, but the specifics — display sites, seasonality, male territory size — have not been recorded for this species.
Breeding
FishBase records the reproductive mode plainly: Haplochromis annectidens is a mouthbrooder, and like essentially all members of the Victoria/Nabugabo haplochromine flock it is a maternal (female) mouthbrooder. In this breeding system the female lays a small clutch of relatively large eggs, immediately takes them into her mouth, and — fertilising them via the male's anal-fin ocelli in the classic haplochromine fashion — incubates them orally through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, releasing the fry only when they can fend for themselves and gathering them back into her mouth at the first sign of danger.
Species-specific fecundity has not been published for annectidens, but the clutch is small by the standards of substrate-spawning cichlids: small Victoria-region haplochromines of this size typically carry on the order of a few dozen eggs (very roughly 20–60), a genus-typical figure rather than a measured one for this fish. The trade-off is the haplochromine norm — few, well-provisioned young given prolonged maternal mouth protection rather than many eggs left in a nest. Parental care is entirely the female's; the male contributes nothing after fertilisation. No captive spawning account for this particular species appears in the accessible literature.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis annectidens is, for all practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is a small, plain, single-lake Ugandan endemic of no commercial value (FishBase notes it is of no interest to fisheries and harmless to humans), and it does not appear in the ornamental trade. There is no established body of hobbyist husbandry experience for it, and anyone who genuinely encountered it would almost certainly be a researcher working on the Lake Victoria region flock rather than an aquarist.
What can be said is by analogy to the many Victoria-basin haplochromines that are kept. They are robust, active maternal mouthbrooders best housed in groups with a surplus of females to spread male attention, over sand with some structure and planting to mimic the weedy margins they favour. Soft to moderately hard, near-neutral water in the mid-to-high twenties Celsius would suit a Nabugabo fish, matching its lake's soft, low-conductivity, pH-~7 conditions rather than the hard alkaline parameters used for Rift Lake cichlids. Males of the flock are persistent and can be hard on conspecifics and on females, so cover and floor space matter. None of this should be read as a recommendation to seek the species out: it is a conservation-sensitive endemic, currently assessed as Critically Endangered, and is best left to the wild and to dedicated programmes. Where hobbyists keep 'Lake Victoria haplochromines,' they are almost always keeping more widely available members of the flock, not annectidens.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis annectidens as Critically Endangered, in an assessment by L. Kaufman dating to 1996 (criteria A1ace, B1+2cde). The driver is the story of the whole Lake Victoria region flock. From the 1950s onward the predatory Nile perch (Lates niloticus) was introduced into Victoria and its satellites, including Nabugabo; combined with eutrophication and rising turbidity, perch predation triggered one of the largest vertebrate mass-extinctions of modern times, wiping out a large fraction of the basin's endemic haplochromines. In Lake Nabugabo, roughly half of the indigenous fish species disappeared from open water after the perch established.
The more hopeful part of the story is that Nabugabo's vegetated margins and surrounding wetlands acted as physical and physiological refugia — hypoxic, weed-choked shallows that the perch could not effectively hunt — and several haplochromines, annectidens prominent among them, persisted there. As Nile perch stocks were reduced by intensive fishing through the 1990s, Chapman and colleagues documented a genuine faunal resurgence: by 2000 haplochromine cichlids were again abundant in inshore and offshore waters of Nabugabo, and annectidens was reported as one of the recovering, locally dominant cichlids. That resurgence tempers but does not erase the threat. The 1996 Critically Endangered listing predates the recovery and has not been formally reassessed, and the underlying pressures — Nile perch, eutrophication, and human disturbance of the very wetland margins that served as refuges (including burning of shoreline vegetation) — remain. As a fish confined to a single small lake, annectidens has no second home if Nabugabo's littoral is degraded.
