Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis engystoma was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1933, in her account of the cichlid fishes collected by the Cambridge Expedition to the East African Lakes of 1930–31 (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 38: 309–341, the species on p. 331). The unique holotype (BMNH 1914.4.8.7) is held in the Natural History Museum, London, and the type locality is Lake Edward in eastern Africa. The name has stood unchanged since: Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and the CLOFFA checklist (van Oijen et al. 1991) both list it as valid as Haplochromis engystoma Trewavas, 1933, with no junior synonyms. It belongs to the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, the African cichlids, and within them to the vast, taxonomically fluid assemblage long lumped under the catch-all genus Haplochromis. The genus as used here is a deliberately broad container: Greenwood's influential phyletic revisions of the 1970s–80s split the East African haplochromines into many small genera, and engystoma is one of the species sometimes shifted into Astatotilapia. Because that generic carve-up remains unsettled and is applied inconsistently across the literature, this atlas keeps the long-standing combination Haplochromis engystoma. The fish is part of the endemic radiation of the Lake Edward system — Lakes Edward and George, joined by the Kazinga Channel — which is estimated to hold on the order of 60 to 80 Haplochromis species, most of them small and poorly studied compared with the better-known flocks of Lakes Victoria, Malawi and Tanganyika.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of 3.5 in total length, so a well-grown adult is roughly the size of a finger, in keeping with the modest dimensions typical of the Lake Edward haplochromine flock. The body is the laterally compressed, moderately deep oval shared by most generalized Haplochromis. The single most cited feature is the one that gives the fish its name: the snout is distinctly decurved, curving downward so that the mouth sits low and appears drawn 'near' the rest of the head — the trait the epithet engystoma ('narrow/near mouth') is generally read as describing. Beyond that, detailed colour and meristic information for the species is thin in the accessible literature; like many of its flock-mates it was diagnosed largely on proportional and dental characters in a brief early-20th-century description rather than on a vivid colour pattern. As in haplochromines generally, the sexes are expected to differ: breeding males develop the brighter nuptial colours and the egg-spot-like markings (ocelli) on the anal fin that are the hallmark of the group, while females and non-breeding fish stay a plainer silvery-brown. No published quantitative account of sexual dimorphism specific to Haplochromis engystoma was located, so that statement rests on the consistent pattern across the genus rather than on a measured description of this species.
Habitat
Haplochromis engystoma is endemic to the Lake Edward system and is recorded from Lake Edward itself, which straddles the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the western branch of the East African Rift. FishBase classes it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species of the tropical zone (it lies essentially on the equator, between 0° and 1° S). Lake Edward is a rift lake occupying a half-graben, reaching a maximum depth of about 384 ft east of its western shore (Lehman 2002), though its haplochromines are overwhelmingly fish of the productive, well-lit upper waters and inshore zones rather than the deep, often deoxygenated hypolimnion. Its waters are warm and moderately alkaline — surface temperatures broadly in the mid-20s °C, and a pH on the high side of neutral (roughly 8 to 9), reflecting the lake's relatively mineral-rich, evaporatively concentrated chemistry. No depth profile specific to engystoma has been published; treating it as an inhabitant of the upper water column and inshore habitats (on the order of the top several metres to a few tens of metres) is consistent with how its small flock-mates are distributed, and the figures stored here are the lake-level envelope rather than measured limits for this species.
Feeding
No published diet study or gut-content analysis specific to Haplochromis engystoma was found, so its trophic role can only be sketched. It does not appear among the piscivorous Haplochromis of Lake Edward catalogued in the recent Vranken et al. revisions, nor among the named paedophages, oral-mollusc shellers or lobed-lipped species those authors described — placing it, by elimination, among the lake's broad pool of small, generalized haplochromines rather than in one of the conspicuous specialist guilds. FishBase's model-based estimate puts its trophic level at about 3.3, the value expected of a fish taking a mixed diet of small invertebrates with some incidental plant and detrital material. The decurved snout and low-set mouth that name the species suggest a fish oriented toward feeding off or near the substrate. In the wider Lake Edward community, fish of this size and type function as mid-level consumers of insect larvae, micro-crustacea and other benthos, themselves prey for the lake's larger piscivorous cichlids and for non-cichlid predators. All of this is inference from the genus and the lake; a direct dietary description of Haplochromis engystoma remains to be published.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been documented for Haplochromis engystoma in particular, and what follows is the well-established pattern for the East African haplochromine flocks to which it belongs. These fish are maternal (uniparental) mouthbrooders with a polygynous, lek-like mating system. Males in breeding condition take on bright nuptial colours and the yellow-to-orange anal-fin ocelli ('egg spots') characteristic of the group, and court ripe females over a small display site or territory rather than forming lasting pair bonds. The female chooses among displaying males, spawns with one, and thereafter assumes sole care of the brood; the male's investment ends at fertilization and he resumes courting other females. Anal-fin egg spots play their famous role here, exploiting the female's instinct to gather her eggs into her mouth and so ensuring the eggs are fertilized inside the buccal cavity. Whether Haplochromis engystoma defends a substrate territory, builds any kind of spawning pit, or spawns in open water has not been described; these particulars vary across the flock, and no species-specific account exists.
Breeding
FishBase records the reproductive mode plainly — 'mouthbrooding by females' — which is the one breeding fact firmly established for the species and is consistent with the entire Lake Edward haplochromine radiation. After spawning, the female holds the fertilized eggs and then the developing larvae in her mouth, carrying them through the most vulnerable phase of life and releasing free-swimming fry only once they are well developed; for a period afterward she may continue to let the young shelter in her mouth when threatened. No clutch count, egg size, brooding duration or fry-development timetable has been published for Haplochromis engystoma. As a genus-typical reference point, small Haplochromis of this size generally produce modest broods on the order of a few dozen comparatively large, yolk-rich eggs — far fewer than open-water egg-scatterers, the trade-off that maternal mouthbrooding makes in exchange for greatly improved survival of each offspring. That figure is offered only as the genus norm; it has not been measured for this species. No captive spawning of Haplochromis engystoma appears to have been reported.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis engystoma is essentially never kept in the aquarium hobby. It is a small, drab, scientifically obscure endemic of a remote and politically difficult region — Lake Edward sits largely within Virunga National Park in the DR Congo and adjoining protected areas in Uganda — and it has no history in the ornamental trade. A handful of Lake Edward haplochromines (for example Haplochromis limax) have occasionally been collected and circulated among specialist keepers, but engystoma is not among the forms that have entered the hobby, and there are no published husbandry or breeding accounts to draw on. Were it ever maintained, the sensible approach would be the one used for other small alkaline-lake haplochromines: hard, alkaline water (pH around 8 to 9) at roughly 75–81 °F, a tank with open sand and broken rock to define territories, and a sex ratio of one male to several females to spread his attention and reduce harassment, exactly as for Lake Victoria-basin haplochromines. It would be a fish for a dedicated biotope or conservation-minded aquarist rather than a general community tank. As things stand, this section is necessarily hypothetical: the species is a subject of ichthyology, not of aquarium keeping.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis engystoma as Least Concern, assessed on 23 August 2021 (published 2022) by Natugonza and Musinguzi, with the population trend listed as unknown and the range given as Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Least Concern rating reflects that the species is not known to be narrowly restricted or in measurable decline rather than any detailed monitoring — like most of the Lake Edward flock it is data-poor. The broader concern for these fish is the state of the lake system itself. Unlike Lake Victoria, Lake Edward never received the introduced Nile perch that devastated that lake's haplochromines, which has spared its flock the catastrophic collapse seen there; but the system faces growing pressure from artisanal and sometimes illegal fishing, lakeshore population growth, sedimentation and nutrient loading from catchment land use, and the general instability of a region where much of the lake lies within or beside conflict-affected protected areas. Because the Lake Edward haplochromines are still being actively described and revised — a dozen piscivorous species were formalized only in 2022 — the conservation status of any individual small species like engystoma should be read as provisional, resting on a still-incomplete understanding of the flock's true diversity and distribution.
