Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Victoria — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Pyxichromis orthostoma — now usually placed in the genus Pyxichromis — is a large-mouthed piscivorous haplochromine of the Lake Kyoga system, the chain of satellite lakes draining the Lake Victoria region of Uganda. Described by Charles Tate Regan in his 1922 monograph on the cichlids of Lake Victoria, it is a maternal mouthbrooder built as an ambush predator, and the IUCN has assessed it as Vulnerable.

Taxonomy & naming

Pyxichromis orthostoma was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1922, in his landmark paper 'The Cichlid Fishes of Lake Victoria' (Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 1922, pt 1: 157–191, the species account on p. 184, fig. 9). The type locality is Lake Salisbury — now Lake Bisina — in the Kyoga system of Uganda, and the description rests on a single specimen: the holotype, BMNH 1912.10.15.67, in the Natural History Museum, London. Despite the title of Regan's monograph, the fish is not from Lake Victoria proper; it belongs to the Kyoga lakes immediately downstream, which share Victoria's haplochromine fauna.

The species sits in the vast, taxonomically unsettled 'Haplochromis' assemblage of the Victoria–Kyoga catchment, a flock of several hundred closely related cichlids. In his 1980 revision of the piscivorous haplochromines, P. Humphry Greenwood placed it in a new genus, Pyxichromis Greenwood, 1980, of which it is the type species, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes today lists Pyxichromis orthostoma (Regan, 1922) as the valid name. It has also been referred to the predatory genus Prognathochromis. FishBase, by contrast, retains every lacustrine and riverine haplochromine of the Lake Victoria catchment in the catch-all genus Haplochromis Hilgendorf, 1888, following van Oijen et al. (1991), pending a comprehensive revision of the flock — and it is that convention this atlas follows for the page heading. There are no synonyms beyond the genus-level recombinations.

Morphology

Pyxichromis orthostoma is a slender, predatory haplochromine. FishBase gives a maximum size of 3.5 in standard length for examined museum material, though aquarium specimens are reported larger — hobbyists cite roughly 7–8 in total length for fully grown males, with females a little smaller. The defining feature is the head: a long, pointed snout and a large, strongly oblique mouth that opens upward, the hallmark of an ambush piscivore that engulfs prey from below and in front. The specific name reflects this jaw geometry — orthostoma, 'straight mouth' — a reference Greenwood and later authors read as describing the unusually steep, near-vertical gape. Hobbyists who keep the fish liken its silhouette to a Neotropical pike or snook cichlid.

Colour is sexually dimorphic in the manner typical of the flock. Dominant, breeding males develop a greenish to yellowish body with a reddish dorsum and the metallic sheen common to mature haplochromines; a purplish cast has been noted in fish from Lake Nyaguo. Females and subordinate fish are a plainer silver. As in other haplochromines, the male anal fin carries egg-spot ocelli used during spawning. The body is not boldly patterned, so the fish is recognized more by its shape and predatory head than by colour.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Lake Kyoga system of central Uganda — a network of shallow, swamp-fringed lakes (Kyoga itself, plus satellite lakes including Bisina/Salisbury, Nawampasa and Nyaguo) that lies just downstream of Lake Victoria on the Victoria Nile and shares its haplochromine fauna. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical lake waters, occurring between about 1°N and 3°N. The IUCN lists its habitat simply as inland wetlands.

No detailed in-situ chemistry has been published specifically for this species, but the Kyoga lakes are warm, shallow and heavily vegetated, with extensive papyrus and macrophyte fringes. FishBase records a temperature range of about 73–81 °F, consistent with these equatorial lowland lakes; pH in the broader Victoria–Kyoga region typically runs from near-neutral to alkaline, on the order of 7.2 to 9.0. Published depth figures for the species are not available; the Kyoga lakes are themselves shallow — generally only a few metres deep — so the fish is effectively a shallow-water lake cichlid, and the depth band given here reflects the lakes it inhabits rather than a measured range for the species.

Feeding

Pyxichromis orthostoma is a piscivore — one of the large-mouthed predatory haplochromines that Greenwood grouped together on the basis of their hunting morphology. The big, oblique jaws and pointed head mark it as an ambush predator that lies in wait and seizes smaller fish, and FishBase places it at a trophic level around 3.3. In the species-rich Victoria–Kyoga flock, the principal prey of such predators were historically the smaller zooplanktivorous and detritivorous haplochromines that once swarmed these lakes. Hobbyists who keep the fish confirm the predatory habit plainly: it will take any tank-mate small enough to fit in its mouth, strikes hard at live food, and is best regarded as an opportunistic fish-eater rather than a specialist of any single prey type.

Mating

Like the rest of the Lake Victoria–Kyoga haplochromine radiation, Pyxichromis orthostoma is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with no lasting pair bond. Males hold and defend a spawning station — typically at the base of a rock or other structure — and court passing females with the lateral displays and quivering characteristic of the flock, the egg-spot ocelli on the anal fin playing their part in the spawning ritual. Reported aquarium behaviour is comparatively mild for a predator: keepers describe males as not especially rough on females, though females still need cover and benefit from being conditioned away from male harassment before they will spawn. Mating follows the standard haplochromine sequence, with the pair circling in the so-called 'T' position as the female lays and immediately collects her eggs.

Breeding

Reproduction is maternal mouthbrooding, the universal mode of the Victoria–Kyoga flock. The female lays a small clutch of eggs, takes them into her mouth almost at once, and fertilizes them there by mouthing the male's anal-fin egg-spots; she then carries and incubates the developing eggs and larvae in her buccal cavity, taking no food, until the fry are released as free-swimming juveniles. The male contributes nothing beyond fertilization. Wild fecundity has not been formally documented, but aquarium spawns are reported in the range of about 25–75 eggs — modest, as is typical for these mouthbrooders, with the small clutch offset by the heavy investment of oral incubation. Hobbyist accounts give a brooding period of roughly 18–20 days, after which the female releases a small but numerous brood; the fry take newly hatched brine shrimp readily and grow without much difficulty, the main caution being that they can be cannibalistic if not fed often enough to even out growth. Keepers note the fish can be slow to start breeding — conditioning ripe females is the bottleneck — but spawns freely once established.

In the aquarium

Pyxichromis orthostoma is a specialist's fish, rarely kept and effectively never seen in the general trade; it circulates only occasionally among Lake Victoria enthusiasts and is not stocked by shops. It is not difficult to maintain for anyone equipped for medium-sized predatory cichlids, but its requirements are specific. It is an active, large-mouthed predator that swims a great deal, so it wants a long, roomy tank rather than a tall one; given the adult size hobbyists report, a footprint on the order of 47 in or more is sensible for a group. Décor of rockwork and tall, sturdy plants such as Vallisneria suits it, offering both ambush cover and visual breaks.

Water should reflect its warm, hard, alkaline origins: temperatures around 73–81 °F and a neutral-to-alkaline pH (roughly 7.2–9.0), with clean, well-filtered water and routine changes — the same regime that suits Victorian and Malawian haplochromines generally. The cardinal husbandry rule is the obvious one for an ambush piscivore: do not house it with anything small enough to be swallowed. Tank-mates should be of similar size; keepers have had success pairing it with robust but not overly aggressive Malawi haps and mbuna. Diet is straightforward — it relishes live and meaty frozen foods — but accounts caution against overfeeding rich protein and against offering prey so large it strains the jaws, and they recommend mixing in a quality vegetable-based pellet or flake. As a Vulnerable species with a tiny native range, it is also a good candidate for conservation-minded captive maintenance by hobbyists who can keep a breeding group going.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Pyxichromis orthostoma as Vulnerable (VU), under criteria A1ace and B1+2ce; the assessment was carried out on 3 August 1996 by Les Kaufman (Boston University) and published in the 2016 update of the Red List, where it is flagged as needing reassessment. The listing reflects the species' very restricted range in the Lake Kyoga system of Uganda and the broad collapse the Lake Victoria–Kyoga haplochromine flock suffered in the late twentieth century. That collapse followed the deliberate introduction and explosive spread of the Nile perch (Lates niloticus), a large predator that, together with eutrophication, falling water clarity and the spread of water hyacinth, drove an estimated 200 or more endemic haplochromine species to extinction or near-extinction across the basin — one of the most severe vertebrate extinction events of modern times. As a piscivore competing with and preyed upon by the introduced perch, Pyxichromis orthostoma was directly exposed to these pressures. The Kyoga satellite lakes, being smaller and somewhat buffered from the worst of the Victoria-proper invasion, have served as partial refugia for a number of Kyoga-region endemics, which is part of why this species persists at all. No species-specific conservation programme is in place, and the Red List assessment is by its own note overdue for updating.
