Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis pardus was described in 2022 by Nathan Vranken, Maarten Van Steenberge, Annelies Heylen, Eva Decru and Jos Snoeks in the European Journal of Taxonomy, in a revision titled 'From a pair to a dozen: the piscivorous species of Haplochromis (Cichlidae) from the Lake Edward system.' That study redescribed the two long-known piscivores of Lakes Edward and George (Haplochromis squamipinnis Regan, 1921 and Haplochromis mentatus Regan, 1925) and added ten new species, of which pardus is one. The holotype (RMCA 2016.035.P.0202) and a series of paratypes are held at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium, with additional paratypes at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences; the type locality is Mukutu Kihinga, a rocky offshore site near Mweya at the northern end of Lake Edward, Uganda (about 0°11′S, 29°52′E). The fish sits in the tribe Haplochromini within the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. As is typical of the East African haplochromine radiations, the catch-all genus Haplochromis is widely regarded as an artificial assemblage; the older literature placed large-jawed Lake Edward piscivores in the genera Harpagochromis and Prognathochromis, names the describers invoke as keywords, and the generic placement of pardus and its relatives should be read as provisional pending a stable phylogeny of the flock. There are no synonyms — the species has been recognised under a single name since its description.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid by piscivore standards: the largest known specimen measured about 4 in (4 in) standard length, and that small adult size is itself a diagnostic trait — every other piscivorous Haplochromis in the Lake Edward system reaches 4.5–8.5 in SL. The body carries a piscivorous build (relatively shallow cheek and narrow interorbital area set it apart from its larger relatives), with 15–16 dorsal spines, 8–10 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines and 8–10 anal soft rays, and 29–30 vertebrae. The mouth bears many small outer teeth — 39 to 56 in the outer row, more numerous and finer than in the larger-toothed 'macrodontic' piscivores of the same lake — placing pardus among the 'microdontic' piscivores recognised in the 2022 revision. The defining feature is colour: the specific name pardus, Latin for leopard, refers to the dark patterning of dominant males, whose nearly uniform black-to-yellowish-pink flanks are broken by clear black blotches read as interrupted horizontal and vertical bars. Notably, even small fish under 4 in are already speckled to uniformly black, whereas the juveniles and small specimens of the other Lake Edward piscivores stay light-coloured — a difference the describers used to separate pardus from all of them. Sexual dimorphism follows the haplochromine norm: it is the dominant males that develop the dark nuptial pattern, while females and non-territorial males are plainer.
Habitat
Haplochromis pardus is known only from Lake Edward, a comparatively small (about 2,202 mi²) but deep rift lake (maximum depth roughly 367–384 ft) shared by Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and lying within Queen Elizabeth and Virunga National Parks. The type series was taken at a rocky offshore site, and FishBase and the original description record the species from inshore areas of the lake. Lake Edward is a productive, alkaline soda-influenced rift lake: long-standing limnological work (Talling's mid-1960s surveys, and more recent studies) describes warm surface waters in the mid-20s °C, a high pH around 9, and elevated conductivity historically on the order of 800–1,100 µS/cm — chemistry broadly comparable to the better-known Rift lakes and well suited to rock- and shore-associated haplochromines. No water measurements were published specifically at the pardus collecting sites, so the figures given here are lake-wide values rather than microhabitat readings. The basin holds about 60 cichlid species, the large majority of them endemic, and pardus is part of that endemic flock.
Feeding
No gut contents have been examined for this species; its diet is inferred entirely from anatomy. The skull, jaw and tooth structure are those of a piscivore, and the describers — together with FishBase and the Cloffa database — classify it as 'most probably a piscivorous species,' meaning a fish-eater that hunts smaller fishes. Within the Lake Edward piscivore guild, the 2022 revision splits the species into macrodontic forms (fewer, larger teeth) and microdontic forms (many small teeth); pardus belongs to the microdontic group, a dentition the authors associate with differences in hunting technique and prey size relative to the big-toothed predators. Its own small adult size means it preys on correspondingly small fishes. FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.3. As with much of this newly described flock, the specifics of its diet, foraging behaviour and exact prey remain undocumented in the field.
Mating
Nothing has been published on the social behaviour, courtship or territoriality of Haplochromis pardus specifically. What can be said comes from the wider biology of Lake haplochromines and from the species' own colour pattern. Haplochromines are sexually dichromatic, polygynous mouthbrooders in which dominant, brightly or darkly marked males hold and defend display territories and court multiple females, while females and subordinate males remain cryptically coloured. That dominant males of pardus turn speckled-to-black, develop the leopard blotching, and are distinguishable from females by this nuptial dress all fit that pattern, and imply the usual haplochromine arrangement of male display and female mate choice. The detail — whether males defend rock crevices, sand arenas or open water, and how pairs form — has not been observed for this fish.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in Haplochromis pardus. Like virtually all haplochromine cichlids of the East African lakes, it is a maternal (female) mouthbrooder: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods the eggs and then the larvae there until the fry are free-swimming, with no paternal care. Egg-spot-like markings on the male anal fin, typical of the lineage, are presumed to function in the standard haplochromine spawning sequence on the lake bed. No clutch size has been reported for pardus; among Lake Victoria–region and Edward haplochromines of similar small body size, brood sizes are modest — commonly on the order of a few dozen eggs (roughly 20–60), a genus-typical figure offered here only as context, not as a measured value for this species. The fish's small adult size and FishBase's 'high resilience' estimate (population doubling time under 15 months) are consistent with the rapid, low-fecundity, high-investment breeding strategy characteristic of mouthbrooding haplochromines.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis pardus is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It was described only in 2022 from museum and field-collected material, is restricted to a remote bi-national rift lake inside two national parks, and there is no record of it in the ornamental trade or in hobbyist or public-aquarium collections. By contrast, a handful of Lake Victoria and Lake Edward/Kivu haplochromines do circulate among specialist keepers and conservation-breeding programmes, so the husbandry that would apply to pardus can be reasoned from those relatives rather than from any direct experience. Such fish are kept as hard, alkaline-water cichlids: a pH around 7.5–8.5 and temperatures of roughly 75–81 °F suit Lake Edward chemistry. A small piscivore like this would need a tank with open swimming room and rockwork for males to hold territory, would be expected to eat smaller tankmates, and — as a haplochromine — would do best in a one-male, several-female group to spread male aggression. None of this has been tested on pardus itself; anyone encountering it would be working with a wild-type, conservation-grade fish, not an established aquarium strain. For now it should be regarded as a species of scientific rather than hobby interest.
Conservation
Haplochromis pardus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List (status: Not Evaluated, confirmed on the Red List and via FishBase, 2025); it is likewise not listed by CITES or CMS. That absence reflects how recently it was described rather than any judgement of security. As a single-lake endemic with a very small known range, its fortunes are tied entirely to Lake Edward, and the lake faces real and documented pressures: heavy and increasing fishing effort and declining stocks, rapid human population growth in riparian communities, habitat degradation and pollution, the looming threat of oil exploration in the Albertine Rift, and climate change. Lake Edward's cichlid flock is overwhelmingly endemic (about 92% of its roughly 60 cichlid species occur nowhere else), which makes narrow-range species such as this one inherently vulnerable to any lake-wide disturbance even though no specific threat to pardus has been quantified. A formal Red List assessment is the obvious next step.
