Taxonomy & naming
Oreochromis salinicola was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1948, from the saline-spring habitat near the Lufira River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, during the great mid-century Belgian surveys of the Congo basin's fishes. Originally placed in 'Tilapia,' it was reassigned to the maternal-mouthbrooding genus Oreochromis in the course of Trewavas's revision of the tilapiines, and is accepted as valid as Oreochromis salinicola in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase. The epithet is wonderfully literal: salinicola, from Latin salinus, 'of salt,' and -cola, 'dweller,' meaning 'salt-dweller' or 'inhabitant of saline water' — a precise label for a tilapia found in saline springs. The species belongs to the upper Congo (Lualaba/Lufira) assemblage of Oreochromis and is one of several specialised, narrow-range tilapias that have evolved in the unusual aquatic habitats of the Katanga region.
Morphology
Oreochromis salinicola is a dwarf tilapia, reaching only about 4 in in total length — one of the smallest members of a genus better known for substantial food fishes. It is a relatively slender-bodied fish, with a body depth recorded as not more than about 38.5 percent of standard length, and is marked by eight to ten dark vertical bars across the upper flank together with three mid-lateral blotches. The fin counts are those of a small Oreochromis — roughly 15–17 dorsal spines and 11–13 soft rays. This combination of small size, slender build, the banded upper flank and the row of lateral blotches distinguishes it within the genus. As in tilapias generally it carries the fine grazing dentition of a microphage and shows the breeding-dependent colour changes typical of the group, though its life colours are poorly documented given how rarely the fish is seen.
Habitat
The species is known only from Mwashia (variously spelled Moa Chia or Mwashya), a region of saline springs near the Lufira River, just below the barrage lake at Mwadingusha in the upper Congo (Lualaba/Lufira) basin of Haut-Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. This is a genuinely unusual habitat — a localised system of mineral-rich, saline spring water in an otherwise freshwater river basin — and the fish's specific name records its adaptation to it. The Mwadingusha barrage impounds Lake Tshangalele on the Lufira; the salinicola habitat lies in the saline-spring zone below it. Confined to this single small, specialised locality, the species is the very definition of a microendemic, its entire known global range amounting to one set of springs. As a tilapia tolerant of saline conditions it parallels the soda-lake Oreochromis amphimelas of Tanzania, another salt-adapted member of the genus, but on a far smaller geographic and bodily scale.
Feeding
No detailed diet study is available for Oreochromis salinicola, but its small size, fine tilapiine dentition and generic placement indicate the standard Oreochromis microphage habit: grazing and filtering algae, diatoms, fine plant material and detritus, with the fish working low on the food web as a primary consumer. The saline-spring environment it occupies would support specialised algal and microbial communities — the kind of fine plant and microbial food a small grazing tilapia can exploit — and the species is best understood as a dwarf herbivore-detritivore adapted to making a living in this restricted, mineral-rich habitat. There is no indication of any departure from the broad-spectrum grazing-and-detritus diet that characterises the genus.
Mating
As an Oreochromis, salinicola is a maternal mouthbrooder, and although its breeding has not been observed in detail, it can be expected to follow the genus's lek-and-pit system: territorial males clearing and defending small spawning depressions and displaying to females, spawning over the male's pit, and the female taking the fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately afterward. This pattern is invariant among the studied members of the genus, and nothing about a dwarf, salt-adapted tilapia suggests it would differ in kind, though the scale of nests and territories would be correspondingly small. Breeding in a spring-fed system, with its comparatively stable water supply, might be less tightly seasonal than in the strongly seasonal lakes and rivers other members of the genus inhabit — but this is inference rather than recorded observation.
Breeding
Reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding: the female would incubate the eggs and larvae in her buccal cavity and shelter the free-swimming fry in her mouth when threatened until they are independent, as in all studied Oreochromis. As a dwarf species, its fecundity must be very low in absolute terms — a small female can hold only a small clutch in her mouth — perhaps a few dozen to a hundred or so eggs, far below the several hundred of the large food-fish tilapias. This low absolute reproductive output, combined with the species' confinement to a single tiny locality, is part of what makes it vulnerable: there is little reproductive buffer against disturbance. No captive breeding or detailed reproductive study of salinicola is documented; what can be said is inferred from its body size and from the well-characterised biology of the genus rather than from direct observation of this elusive fish.
In the aquarium
Oreochromis salinicola is not an aquarium fish and is effectively unknown in the hobby; it is a Vulnerable microendemic of a single saline-spring locality, of interest to ichthyologists rather than keepers, and should not be collected from the wild. There is no husbandry tradition to draw on. Were it ever maintained — necessarily in a research or conservation context — the keeping requirements would follow its unusual ecology: hard, mineral-rich, somewhat saline water rather than soft fresh water; warm tropical temperatures; a small, well-planted or structured tank appropriate to a dwarf fish; and an algae- and detritus-based diet matched to its grazing habit. Given its tiny range and low fecundity, the constructive role for the aquarium and conservation community is supporting protection of its single spring habitat and any properly managed research population, not private keeping of a fish that almost no one will ever see.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Oreochromis salinicola as Vulnerable (assessed 16 February 2009). The basis is its extreme range restriction: the species is known only from one set of saline springs near the Lufira River, so any disturbance to that single small habitat threatens the entire global population. The upper Congo (Katanga) region is subject to pressures including hydrological alteration around the Mwadingusha barrage and Lake Tshangalele, mining activity (Haut-Katanga is a major mining province), pollution and water abstraction, any of which could degrade or destroy the specialised saline-spring system the fish depends on. With a microendemic range and low absolute fecundity, the species has little resilience to local disturbance, which is reflected in its Vulnerable listing. It carries no CITES listing, and — like many narrow-range Congo-basin endemics — it suffers from a shortage of recent field information, so its current status rests on its inherent vulnerability as much as on direct monitoring of decline.
