Taxonomy & naming
Petrochromis sp. "Red Bulu Point" is a hobby label for an undescribed Petrochromis, named for Bulu Point on the Tanzanian shore of Lake Tanganyika. A researcher's note places it in the macrognathus group of the genus and records collection around Mahale and Lyamembe, with fish exported through Bulu Point. The form is undescribed, and its identity and range are not documented in the sources behind the atlas.
Morphology
Imperial Tropicals describes adult males in breeding dress as intense neon red or orange, with a black mask and black ventral and pectoral fins. It says females are mostly gray with a few pale orange patches, and juveniles are silver with faint vertical bars. No measurements are recorded.
Habitat
The hobby record places the form on the Tanzanian coast of Lake Tanganyika, around Mahale. Genus-level: Petrochromis live over rocky shores, where they graze the algal and detrital film on the stone.
Feeding
Not documented for this form. Genus-level: Petrochromis are specialised grazers that comb the film of algae and trapped organic matter from rock surfaces with long, closely set teeth.
Mating
Not documented for this form. Genus-level: Petrochromis are maternal mouthbrooders.
Breeding
Not documented for this form. Genus-level: eggs are laid and taken into the female's mouth, where she holds and carries the brood.
In the aquarium
Imperial Tropicals says the fish is rarely seen in the hobby and takes time to show its colour. Genus-typical care applies: a large tank with rockwork, hard alkaline water, and vegetable-based foods to suit a grazer.
Conservation
An undescribed form has no IUCN category, and none is claimed here. Population and range data for it are not documented in the atlas's sources.
