Placidochromis lineatus was described in 2004 by the Belgian ichthyologist Mark Hanssens, in his chapter 'The deep-water Placidochromis species' within Jos Snoeks's volume The Cichlid Diversity of Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa: Identification, Distribution and Taxonomy (Cichlid Press) — the work that gave formal names to a cluster of previously unrecognised deep-living haplochromines. The genus Placidochromis was erected by Eccles and Trewavas in 1989 for generally calm Malawi haplochromines, its name joining Latin placidus, 'placid', with the cichlid name-element chromis. The specific epithet lineatus is Latin for 'striped' or 'lined', referring to the species' striped melanin pattern — an unusually overt diagnostic in a group where most species are told apart by subtle measurements rather than markings. Catalog of Fishes lists the species as valid: Placidochromis lineatus Hanssens, 2004.
Morphology
Placidochromis lineatus is a small cichlid reaching about 3.5 in standard length, somewhat larger than several of its deep-water congeners. It has a relatively slender body (depth around 34–38 percent of standard length) and, unusually for the genus, a high count of 15–16 dorsal-fin spines, with 9–11 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines and 8–9 anal soft rays. The outer oral-jaw teeth are unicuspid, and the lower pharyngeal teeth are described as small and slender — the conical, non-crushing dentition of a fish that takes soft prey rather than hard-shelled items. Hanssens's diagnosis cites a moderately long snout and lower jaw, a relatively narrow interorbital region, and the species' striped melanin pattern as distinguishing features. That dark lined patterning, captured in the name, is the most conspicuous external character separating lineatus from the otherwise plain, proportionally defined members of the deep-water assemblage.
Habitat
Placidochromis lineatus is endemic to Lake Malawi and is known only from Lukoma Bay, on the northeastern (Tanzanian) shore of the lake — a single recorded locality. It is a deep-water fish, with FishBase giving a very narrow depth range of about 404–410 ft, deep in the lake's cool, dimly lit benthic zone where the bottom is generally soft sediment and the water column strongly stratified. As with the other deep-water Placidochromis, both the single locality and the tight depth band almost certainly reflect the limited reach of the deep-net sampling that produced the species rather than a genuinely pinpoint distribution; nonetheless, on present evidence it stands as a narrow-range, deep-water endemic of the lake's northern reaches.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study has been published for Placidochromis lineatus, and its feeding ecology is inferred from anatomy and from the habits of related deep-water Placidochromis. The unicuspid oral teeth and slender, non-molariform pharyngeal teeth point to a soft-prey feeder rather than a snail-crusher — most likely a generalist micro-predator taking small benthic invertebrates and zooplankton from the deep bottom and the water just above it. FishBase assigns it an estimated trophic level of about 3.3, consistent with a small carnivore-leaning omnivore. In the absence of stomach-content data this remains an inference from morphology and from the genus rather than a documented diet for the species.
Mating
Courtship and mating have not been observed in Placidochromis lineatus. As a Lake Malawi haplochromine it is confidently expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder, following the reproductive pattern shared across the lake's cichlid flock. In that system males court females — typically over a chosen patch of substrate — and females select among them before taking the fertilised eggs into the mouth. For a deep-water, single-locality species the natural display ground would lie on the open benthic plains, far below ordinary observation. The form and intensity of any breeding display, male coloration and spawning season are all unrecorded for this species, and the description here is generalised from the broader Malawi radiation.
Breeding
There is no published record of clutch size, egg development or fry-rearing for Placidochromis lineatus. By the consistent biology of the Lake Malawi haplochromines, it is a female mouthbrooder: the female incubates eggs and larvae in her buccal cavity for several weeks, then releases free-swimming fry that may dart back to her mouth when threatened. Small haps in this size range typically produce modest clutches of a few dozen eggs, a low fecundity offset by the high juvenile survival that intensive mouthbrooding affords. Because lineatus is known only from deep-net captures and preserved material, none of these particulars have been observed directly; what is offered is the standard Malawi-flock pattern rather than a species-specific account.
In the aquarium
Placidochromis lineatus is not an aquarium fish. It is a rare, single-locality, deep-water endemic known only from scientific sampling, with no trade history, common name or body of keeping experience attached to it. Any husbandry comments are purely extrapolated from the genus and from general Lake Malawi practice and should be read with that caveat. In principle a small Malawi hap of this kind would require the lake's hard, alkaline water (high pH, moderate-to-high hardness), clean and well-oxygenated conditions, a soft sandy substrate and a calm community of similarly mild sand- and open-water haps; a varied diet of small frozen and live invertebrates plus a quality cichlid preparation would suit its presumed soft-prey feeding. In practice, however, lineatus is a taxonomic and faunistic entity — interesting for its distinctive striped pattern — rather than a fish on anyone's stock list.
Conservation
Placidochromis lineatus is listed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, with the assessment dated 19 June 2018 — a category that fits its situation precisely: a species known from one locality and a small number of deep-net specimens, with no data on population size, trend or true range. It has no CITES listing. Data Deficient is not reassurance; a genuinely narrow-range, deep-water endemic could be vulnerable to the lake-wide pressures that bear on all Lake Malawi cichlids — intensive and expanding fisheries, including demersal trawling over the deep bottom, alongside catchment erosion, sedimentation and the warming and deoxygenation of deep water under climate change, all flagged at ecosystem scale in the Lake Malawi conservation literature. For lineatus the immediate need is better information: targeted deep-water survey to establish whether its apparent restriction to Lukoma Bay is real or a sampling artefact, and protection of the lake's deep benthic environment in the meantime.
