Genus

Placidochromis

Placidochromis is a genus of haplochromine cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi (with a couple of species spilling into Lake Malombe and the upper Shire River), erected by Eccles & Trewavas in 1989 and now holding roughly 42 described species. They are the lake's quintessential "non-mbuna" sand cichlids: peaceful, often metallic-blue mouthbrooders that hover over open bottoms and make a living by sifting sediment or shadowing larger fish that stir prey out of the sand. The single most interesting true thing about the genus is that it is openly a taxonomic holding pen — the Cichlid Room Companion calls it "a catch-all genus, convenient at the moment but which is destined for being subdivided in the future" — because the shared features used to define it are mostly the absence of the specializations seen in better-defined Malawi genera.

About the genus

Taxonomy & the radiation

Placidochromis was named by D. H. Eccles and Ethelwynn Trewavas in their 1989 monograph Malaŵian Cichlid Fishes: The Classification of Some Haplochromine Genera (Lake Fish Movies, Herten), the same sweeping work that carved the old grab-bag genus "Haplochromis" of Lake Malawi into Nimbochromis, Stigmatochromis, Mylochromis, Otopharynx, Protomelas, Tyrannochromis and many others. The name blends Latin placidus (calm, tranquil) with Greek chromis (an old name for a perch-like fish), a nod to the genus's mild disposition. The type species is Placidochromis longimanus (Trewavas, 1935), originally described as a Haplochromis. In the same revision Eccles & Trewavas also coined Eclectochromis; that name, also coined by Eccles & Trewavas (1989), is now usually treated as a junior synonym of Protomelas (Konings 2016; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes).

The genus sits in family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, tribe Haplochromini — the haplochromine lineage that produced Malawi's explosive species flock of 500-plus cichlids, the most extensive recent vertebrate adaptive radiation known (Malinsky et al. 2018, whole-genome study of Malawi cichlids). Within that flock Placidochromis belongs to the "hap" or benthic (non-mbuna) assemblage rather than the rock-dwelling mbuna; recent ID work places it in the Cyrtocarina sub-radiation of benthic haps. The genus roughly doubled in size with Hanssens (2004), "The deep-water Placidochromis species" (pp. 104–197 in J. Snoeks, ed., The Cichlid Diversity of Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa), which formally described a suite of deep-living, sand-associated species such as P. vulgaris, P. longus, P. msakae and P. nkhotakotae. Because membership is defined loosely, the boundary of Placidochromis is genuinely unsettled and most authorities expect future splits; many popular aquarium fish (e.g. the "phenochilus" forms, P. sp. 'electra blue') still circulate under provisional names.

Defining features

Placidochromis is diagnosed less by a single striking specialization than by a combination of generalized, moderately built traits: an oval, laterally compressed haplochromine body, a relatively small to moderate mouth with isognathous or slightly snout-down jaws, fine to moderate dentition, and a colour scheme that in many species runs to metallic blue in dominant males with the female and juvenile drab grey-brown. It is, in other words, defined partly by what it lacks — it does not have the steep grazing dentition of mbuna, the elongate piscivore jaws of Tyrannochromis or Champsochromis, or the extreme sand-sifting snout of Fossorochromis/Lethrinops.

Size varies widely across the genus. At the small end, the famous P. electra (Burgess, 1979) tops out around 5 in (4.5 in SL); mid-sized species like the broadest-ranging species, P. johnstoni, reach about 8 in (8 in TL); and the blue-and-white "phenochilus" fish (P. phenochilus and the trade form P. sp. 'phenochilus Tanzania', the Star Sapphire) are reported to roughly 10 in (10 in) for males, though aquarium specimens commonly stall around 7–8 in (7–8 in). Telling Placidochromis from look-alike blue haps is genuinely hard and often comes down to mouth shape, lip colour and locality: P. phenochilus shows distinctive blue or white lips and a speckled adult sheen, while species like Sciaenochromis fryeri (a true piscivore) have a larger, more terminal mouth, and Otopharynx and Copadichromis differ in fin and head profile. Hanssens (2004) separated several of the deep-water species largely on gill-raker counts and fine meristics rather than colour.

Range & habitat

The genus is endemic to the Lake Malawi system. Most species are confined to the main lake; the broadest-ranging species, P. johnstoni, occurs widely in Lake Malawi and extending into Lake Malombe and the upper Shire River, while many others are narrow endemics — P. electra is centred on Likoma Island, and P. nkhotakotae is known essentially only from Nkhotakota on the Malawian shore (FishBase; Hanssens 2004). Several taxa cross the modern political line into Tanzanian and Mozambican waters of the same lake.

Biotope across the genus is dominated by sand and the "intermediate" sand-over-rock transition rather than the pure rocky reef of the mbuna. FishBase notes P. electra as "commonly found over sand" and P. johnstoni in shallow vegetated areas, rarely over rock. Depth is a real axis of divergence: shallow-water species like electra prefer roughly 23 ft (23 ft) and range up to about 50 ft (49 ft), whereas the Hanssens (2004) deep-water Placidochromis assemblage lives well down the slope on offshore sand, part of the poorly collected deep benthic community. In-situ water chemistry where measured is hard, alkaline and stable — FishBase records pH around 8.0, hardness about 9–19 dH, and temperatures of roughly 75–79 °F (75–79 °F) for the genus, consistent with Lake Malawi's well-buffered, mineral-rich water.

Ecology & diet

Functionally, Placidochromis is built around micro-invertebrate feeding from and around the sand. Several species are classic "sand sifters" or sediment foragers, taking a mouthful of substrate and winnowing out invertebrates and organic matter; FishBase gives a trophic level near 2.8 for P. electra and about 3.5 for the more invertebrate-and-small-prey P. johnstoni, which moves in small foraging groups. The genus's most celebrated ecological trick belongs to the "blue follower" guild: P. electra and several relatives shadow larger sand-digging cichlids — species of Taeniolethrinops, Fossorochromis and the like — and snap up invertebrates the diggers expose, a commensal feeding strategy well documented in Malawi's sand community. An evocative aquarium observation published on the Cichlid Room Companion (Camenius 1996) describes a P. electra diving into and vanishing beneath the sand like a flatfish, underlining how tightly tied the fish is to soft substrate.

The genus is not monolithic, and that is the point. Some "phenochilus"-type fish are reported to follow snail-eating or sand-churning species and pick out molluscs and invertebrates, edging toward a durophagous habit; deep-water Hanssens species presumably exploit offshore benthic invertebrates; and the broadly distributed P. johnstoni behaves as a generalist invertivore of shallow, sometimes vegetated bottoms. None are specialized piscivores or aufwuchs grazers, which is exactly why the genus reads as ecologically "middle-of-the-road" within the lake's finely partitioned food web.

Behaviour & breeding

Like essentially all Lake Malawi haplochromines, every Placidochromis is a maternal (ovophilous) mouthbrooder — there are no substrate- or cave-spawning species in the genus. Spawning follows the standard haplochromine script: a colour-charged dominant male displays over a sand spot or shallow scrape, the female lays and immediately takes the eggs into her mouth, fertilizes them via the male's anal-fin egg-spots, and then broods the clutch in her buccal cavity for roughly three weeks with no paternal care. Clutch sizes are modest and scale with body size — FishBase records about 50 eggs for the small P. electra and up to about 120 for the larger P. johnstoni.

Socially the genus skews peaceful by Malawi standards. Hobbyist accounts on cichlid-forum.com repeatedly describe P. phenochilus as "the most non-aggressive hap I have ever owned" and a "pushover," and the blue "mdoka"/phenochilus forms are noted as nearly monomorphic, with both sexes wearing blue and white lips — unusual for the typically dichromatic haps. Males are territorial when spawning and young males will spar as they mature (keepers report having to thin out surplus males), but the genus generally lacks the relentless intraspecific aggression of mbuna. Breeding triggers are the usual ones for the lake: stable warm water, good condition, sand to spawn over, and a male in full nuptial colour.

In the aquarium

Placidochromis is one of the more forgiving entry points into Malawi "haps," but honesty matters on a few fronts. Tank size is the first: even though several species stay under 6 in (6 in), they are open-water, sand-loving fish that want length, so a 4-ft, 75-gallon (about 75 US gal) tank is a realistic floor for a small group of electra or phenochilus, and the bigger phenochilus and johnstoni are happier in 6-ft, 125-gallon-plus (about 125 US gal) systems. Give them a sand bed they can sift, not coarse gravel. Temperament is a selling point — these are comparatively calm haps that mix well with peacocks (Aulonocara) and other mild blue haps, and they can work in all-male display tanks — but their very mildness means they get bullied by mbuna or pushy haps, so tankmate choice matters more than aggression management.

The honest caveats: they are slow growers (keepers describe phenochilus as among the slowest-growing cichlids they've raised, taking a long time to reach full speckled colour), so patience and a long horizon are required. Surplus males will eventually scrap, so plan to keep harems (one male to several females) or cull. Two classic mistakes apply. First, the look-alike problem: many Placidochromis and their trade morphs are visually similar blue haps and will hybridize readily with congeners and with other haps — keep one blue species per tank if you intend to breed clean lines, and be skeptical of provisional "sp." names and locality labels. Second, diet and "Malawi bloat": as sand-sifting invertivores they should be fed a balanced, not protein-overloaded, diet; chronic overfeeding of rich foods invites the bloat syndrome that plagues over-fed Malawi cichlids. Most species (electra, the phenochilus forms, johnstoni) are reasonable beginner-to-intermediate fish; the deep-water Hanssens species are essentially absent from the hobby and are not a realistic target for keepers.

Conservation

Placidochromis is entirely endemic to the Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa system, which makes the genus's fate inseparable from the lake's. Species-level IUCN status, where assessed, is mostly reassuring: both the type species P. johnstoni and the popular P. electra are listed Least Concern (assessed 20 June 2018; IUCN Red List v2025-2), reflecting wide distributions and no evidence of steep decline. But "Least Concern" coexists with two genuine concerns — many narrow endemics in the genus (single-locality deep-water species from Hanssens 2004) are simply data-poor and unevaluated, and a Least Concern listing says nothing about the lake-wide pressures building under these fish. Targeted aquarium collection exists (electra, phenochilus and johnstoni are all traded), but it is a minor pressure relative to ecosystem-scale change.

Those lake-level pressures are well documented. Lake Malawi supports the most fish-species-rich lake on Earth, and a 2018 Red List assessment found roughly 9% of the 458 fishes evaluated at high extinction risk, driven largely by over-fishing — most visibly the collapse of the chambo (Oreochromis spp.) fishery in the southern lake. Synthesizing the basin's status, Chavula et al. (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research 49(6):102241) catalogue compounding stressors: heavy and often unregulated fishing pressure, sediment and nutrient loading delivered off rapidly deforested catchments, and roughly +33 °F of warming in the shallow surface layer that strengthens thermal stratification and tends to reduce nutrient upwelling and primary productivity, alongside invasive-species risk. None of this targets Placidochromis specifically, and it would be an overstatement to call the genus threatened. The accurate summary is narrower and more useful: the assessed species are currently Least Concern, several others are unevaluated and known from very few sites, and all of them depend on a lake that is demonstrably under strain.
