Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Aulonocara saulosi is one of the sand-dwelling "peacock" cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi, described in 1987 from the lake's south-eastern shore near Masinje. Like the rest of its genus it hunts by holding still over open sand and listening with the enlarged sensory pores that honeycomb its lower jaw, lunging when a buried invertebrate stirs. It is among the more subdued peacocks: breeding males turn a dark steel blue rather than the electric gold or red of the trade favourites, with a green-tinged face in the northern populations that gives the fish its widely used aquarium label, "green face." Most of those trade names attach to a specific reef rather than the species as a whole, because saulosi varies in colour from one population to the next around the lake.

Taxonomy & naming

Aulonocara saulosi was described by Manfred K. Meyer, Rüdiger Riehl and H. Zetzsche in 1987, in their revision of the genus Aulonocara Regan, 1922 from Lake Malawi, the same paper that erected six new species (alongside Aulonocara ethelwynnae, Aulonocara hansbaenschi, Aulonocara hueseri, Aulonocara korneliae and Aulonocara steveni). It was placed in Aulonocara from the outset and has never been moved; the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both carry it as valid in its original combination, with no junior synonyms. The holotype (SMF 21149) is held at the Senckenberg Forschungsinstitut und Naturmuseum in Frankfurt, and the type locality is the east coast of Lake Malawi about 5 mi south of Masinje. A persistent point of confusion is the epithet itself: "saulosi" is far better known in the hobby as the rock-dwelling mbuna Chindongo saulosi (originally Pseudotropheus saulosi Konings, 1990) — a completely different fish in a different genus and habitat. Both names honour the same Malawian diver, Saulos Mwale, which is the source of the overlap. Within Aulonocara, Aulonocara saulosi belongs to the sand-dwelling assemblage that Ad Konings later reviewed in detail; Meyer and colleagues noted in their revision that the traditional characters used to split Aulonocara from Trematocranus (swelling of the infraorbital mucus cavities, cheek squamation, flank-spot pattern) occur in such variable combinations that the genus boundary needed reworking — context that still frames how saulosi is diagnosed against its near relatives.

Morphology

This is a small peacock. FishBase gives a maximum of 3.5 in standard length; popular and field sources that quote total length put adult males at around 4.5–5.5 in and females somewhat smaller, the usual discrepancy between the snout-to-tail-base measurement of ichthyologists and the snout-to-tail-tip figure aquarists use. The body is the moderately elongate, gently arched shape typical of the sand-dwelling Aulonocara, built for hovering low over the bottom. Coloration is comparatively muted for the genus. Non-breeding fish and females are a cryptic dark brown overlaid with faint vertical bars that all but vanish against the sediment. Breeding males darken further to a deep steel- or slate-blue; the diagnostic field mark malawi.si emphasises is a narrow black submarginal band running along the dorsal fin, which separates saulosi from look-alike peacocks. The face colour is the feature behind the hobby name: in the northern populations the snout of a displaying male takes on a metallic green cast, while fish from the Masinje type area show a bluer face. The most distinctive structures are not pigment at all but the widened, pit-lined sensory canals on the underside of the head — the "aulos" (pipe) and "kara" (face) of the genus name — which the fish uses as a lateral-line array to detect prey. Sexual dimorphism is strong: only mature males develop the dark nuptial colour and the green/blue face, with females and juveniles remaining drab year-round.

Habitat

Aulonocara saulosi is endemic to Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa), the second-deepest and one of the most species-rich lakes on Earth, shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. It is not lake-wide: populations are scattered around the southern, central and eastern shores — the Masinje type area on the south-east coast, Likoma Island, the stretch between Domwe Island and Monkey Bay, Londo on the Mozambique coast, and Undu and Hai reefs on the eastern (Tanzanian) side — and the species is absent from the north-western shoreline. It is a fish of the intermediate habitat, the transition zone where sand flats meet rocky outcrops, foraging over the sand patches that lie between rocks rather than on open featureless sand or within the rock piles themselves. Recorded depths run from about 23–131 ft, with most fish encountered around 39 ft, placing it in the well-lit upper part of the lake's habitable zone (Malawi's deeper water is permanently anoxic below roughly 656–820 ft). Lake Malawi's surface water is warm, clear and strongly buffered — typically 73–82 °F at the depths saulosi occupies, with a hard, alkaline chemistry around pH 7.7-8.6 and conductivity near 210-240 µS/cm. FishBase's quoted preference of 72–79 °F sits within that envelope.

Feeding

Like all Aulonocara, Aulonocara saulosi is a sit-and-wait benthic invertivore, and the genus's signature hunting method is the reason its head is built the way it is. The fish hovers a few centimetres above the sand, tilted slightly downward, and holds motionless while the enlarged neuromast-filled canals along its lower jaw register the faint vibrations of invertebrates moving within the substrate. When it detects prey it darts down and engulfs a mouthful of sand, sifting the edible animals — chiefly small crustaceans, insect larvae and other meiofauna living in and on the sediment — and expelling the grains through the gills. FishBase records the diet simply as sand-dwelling invertebrates and estimates a trophic level of about 3.5, consistent with a small carnivore rather than an algae-grazer. In the community of the intermediate zone this makes saulosi part of the guild of peacock cichlids that partition the sand by depth, reef and exact foraging style, sharing the bottom with utaka, other Aulonocara and the rock-dwelling mbuna that work the adjacent boulders.

Mating

Aulonocara saulosi follows the polygynous, non-pair-bonding system general to the genus and to the lake's haplochromine cichlids. Outside breeding the fish are loosely associated and not strongly territorial, drifting over the sand singly or in small loose groups. As males ripen they assume the dark nuptial dress and the green or blue face and begin to display, each defending a small patch of sand or a chosen station among the rocks and courting any receptive female that passes. There is no lasting bond and no biparental care: a male will spawn with several females in succession over a season. Courtship is the quivering lateral display and lead-to-the-spawning-site routine typical of sand-dwelling peacocks, the male flashing his darkened flanks and dorsal band to draw the female down. malawi.si notes the species as a maternal mouthbrooder without conspicuous nest-building or territorial defence, so the male's investment ends at fertilisation; the female carries the burden of parental care entirely.

Breeding

Reproduction has not been studied in the wild in detail, but the mode is well established from the genus and from aquarium spawnings: Aulonocara saulosi is a maternal (ovophile) mouthbrooder. The female lays a small clutch of eggs on the sand or a cleared surface, immediately takes them into her mouth, and collects the male's milt to fertilise them inside the buccal cavity using the classic haplochromine egg-spot cue. Clutches are modest — on the order of a few dozen to perhaps fifty or sixty eggs in a fish this size, far fewer than the rock-grazing mbuna produce — and the female broods them in her mouth for roughly three weeks without feeding, releasing fully formed free-swimming fry that can fend for themselves at once. There is no paternal care and, after release, little or no extended guarding; the relatively large, well-developed young are the trade-off for the small brood size. In aquaria the species spawns readily under Malawi conditions (hard, alkaline water in the high 70s °F) given a sand bottom and a harem of several females to one dominant male, and brooding females are typically stripped or isolated by hobbyists to raise the fry.

In the aquarium

Aulonocara saulosi is an infrequently available peacock in the trade — less common than the showier orange-blush or red-shouldered Aulonocara that dominate export lists — and keepers who seek it out tend to be those already familiar with the genus. It is a moderately straightforward fish to keep once basic Malawi parameters are met, but it rewards attention to social structure and is unforgiving of chronic soft, acidic, or unstable water. As a minimum, a single harem of one male with three or more females needs around 47–59 in of floor length; more space is always preferable, since a dominant male deprived of room will harass females continuously. A sand substrate 2–3 in deep is close to mandatory: the sensory-canal hunting apparatus that defines the Aulonocara is adapted for foraging over and through soft sediment, and fish kept on bare glass or coarse gravel show higher stress and rarely display their natural stalking behaviour. Rocky structures — smooth limestone, water-worn slate, or synthetic equivalents — around the perimeter and back of the tank provide visual barriers that break lines of sight and let subordinate fish retreat, while leaving a central open-sand foraging zone as the focal point of the display.

Water chemistry should mirror the lake of origin. Lake Malawi is strongly buffered and alkaline: maintain pH 7.8–8.5 (the facts.water envelope for saulosi is 7.7–8.6), general hardness upward of 10° dH, and carbonate hardness of 8–12° KH. Temperature in the 75–81 °F range (approximately 75–81 °F) suits the species well; the cooler end of the lake's range sits around 72 °F, but there is no benefit in running it that low in a closed system. Crushed coral or aragonite mixed into the substrate or used as a filter medium is a practical way to hold alkalinity stable between water changes; saulosi, like the rest of the genus, is sensitive to pH crashes caused by an exhausted carbonate buffer, and this is one of the most common reasons peacocks decline or die in otherwise clean tanks. Weekly water changes of 25–30% are recommended to control nitrate, which climbs quickly in the small tank footprints most hobbyists use and is directly correlated with immune suppression in cichlids.

Tankmate selection is the area where most failures occur. Within the genus, multiple male Aulonocara of different species can coexist in a very large tank where sight lines are broken, but in typical aquarium volumes the dominant male will attempt to monopolise all females of any species and will bully subordinate males mercilessly. Mixing Aulonocara species is also the primary route into hybridisation: peacock males are far less discriminating in captivity than in the wild, and a saulosi male will readily court and spawn with females of other Aulonocara species if given the chance. Given that saulosi is a legitimately uncommon, colour-variable fish whose distinct population forms are of real value to dedicated keepers, inadvertent hybrids are a significant problem — and a persistent one, because hybrid fry are usually sold on at the next trade event without disclosure. Keepers who want to maintain a true-breeding colony should run saulosi in a species-only or single-genus tank. Suitable non-cichlid dithers include large, active Malawian cohabitants — synodontis catfish work well — that will not compete for the sand territory.

The harem structure (one displaying male to three or more females) is not optional etiquette; it is a welfare requirement. An isolated pair concentrates the male's aggression on a single female, which is almost always fatal for her over weeks. Three to five females distributes that pressure enough that no single fish takes the full force. As a small peacock — males reach around 4.5–5.5 in total length in the tank, females somewhat shorter — saulosi is not a fish that can be combined safely with large, aggressive mbuna such as Melanochromis or Labeotropheus; the energetic pace and nippy temperament of rock-dwelling mbuna is simply incompatible with a fish that hunts by holding still. Peaceful utaka (Copadichromis and related open-water haplochromines) of similar size are frequently cited as compatible and do not compete directly for sand territory.

Spawning under correct conditions is not difficult. The female picks up the eggs immediately after laying and broods the full clutch — typically a few dozen eggs, consistent with the genus's pattern — in her buccal cavity for around three weeks. She does not eat during this period, so a brooding female should be given a low-stress environment; many keepers isolate her in a separate tank or fine-mesh cage to protect her from harassment and to allow collection of the fry. Alternatively, stripping at roughly two weeks (when the eggs are well past the fragile early stage) and completing development artificially in a tumbler gives high survival rates without subjecting the female to prolonged fasting. Fry are released as fully formed miniatures able to take baby brine shrimp and finely crushed pellet immediately. The main mistakes are: keeping saulosi in insufficiently hard or alkaline water; crowding a single male with a single female; mixing it with other Aulonocara and failing to prevent hybridisation; and underfeeding the fine invertivore diet — high-quality cichlid pellet supplemented with frozen mysis, Artemia and bloodworm matches the species' natural protein-heavy benthic diet far better than plant-based foods.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Aulonocara saulosi as Least Concern (assessed 22 June 2018), reflecting a distribution spread across multiple reefs and shores of a very large lake and no evidence of a population-level decline. It carries no CITES listing. There are no threats specific to this species flagged in the assessment, but it sits within a lake under broad and intensifying pressure: Lake Malawi's cichlid communities face heavy artisanal and commercial fishing, sediment loading from deforestation and agriculture in the catchment, shoreline development, and — for the sand- and intermediate-zone fish in particular — the targeted ornamental trade, since attractive peacocks are collected for export. Because saulosi shows distinct colour forms tied to individual reefs (the green-faced northern fish versus the bluer Masinje type population), localised over-collection or habitat damage at any single site can erode a population that is not easily replaced from elsewhere, even while the species as a whole remains secure. None of this is documented as an immediate danger to Aulonocara saulosi specifically, but it is the backdrop against which its Least Concern status should be read.
