Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the French naturalists Léon Vaillant and Jacques Pellegrin in 1902, originally in the genus Heros, from the Lake Izabal region of eastern Guatemala. The epithet spinosissima ('very spiny') refers to the fin spination. For most of the twentieth century it was carried, like its relatives, within the catch-all genus Cichlasoma; it was transferred to the new genus Rocio when Schmitter-Soto erected that genus in 2007, and it is now one of the three valid Rocio species alongside the widespread octofasciata (Jack Dempsey) and the Yucatán endemic gemmata. Rocio belongs to the Middle American heroine cichlids (tribe Heroini) and is allied to the firemouths (Thorichthys). A 2024 study by Fuentes-Montejo and colleagues examined niche overlap between sympatric Rocio species in Guatemala, where spinosissima occurs alongside octofasciata.
Morphology
Rocio spinosissima is a small cichlid, FishBase reporting a maximum of about 4.5 in SL — intermediate in size between the tiny Rocio gemmata and the much larger Jack Dempsey. It has the stocky, moderately deep Rocio body and the genus's characteristic dense iridescent spangling in blue-green and turquoise over a dark grey-brown ground, with faint vertical barring and the usual dark midlateral and caudal-base markings. The epithet alludes to well-developed fin spines. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus: mature males grow larger with more produced, pointed dorsal and anal fins and brighter spangling, while ripe females are rounder-bodied and frequently show a more contrasting dark flank blotch. Reliable separation from its congeners rests on coloration, meristics and — most simply — its geographically restricted range.
Habitat
Rocio spinosissima is endemic to the Atlantic slope of Guatemala, centred on the large Lake Izabal basin and its associated rivers and lagoons, with occurrence in the connected Río Dulce / Golfete system. These are warm lowland waters — the lake itself is a broad, shallow, vegetated freshwater body draining to the Caribbean via the Río Dulce — over soft substrates with marginal and submerged vegetation. FishBase cites a warm temperature range of roughly 79–82 °F and alkaline-leaning water (pH from about 7.5 upward), consistent with the lowland tropical setting. As a single-basin endemic the species' entire global range lies within this one connected drainage, which is what makes its conservation status precarious relative to its more widespread congeners.
Feeding
Rocio spinosissima is a small carnivore, taken to feed on aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other invertebrates gleaned from the substrate and vegetation; FishBase places it at a trophic level around 3.2, with carnivorous tendencies inferred from its close relatives. In the warm, weedy waters of the Izabal basin it forages over the bottom and among plants for small invertebrate prey, the generalist picking-and-grabbing habit typical of the smaller heroine cichlids. No specialised trophic adaptation distinguishes it from the general feeding mode of the genus.
Mating
Detailed wild courtship for Rocio spinosissima has not been described, but it is expected to conform to the well-documented pattern of its genus and the heroine cichlids: monogamous pair formation, joint defence of a breeding territory, and the usual ritualised courtship of lateral display, fin-flaring and cooperative substrate cleaning, with the pair intensifying in colour and territoriality as spawning approaches. As a small-bodied Rocio it is a less imposing fish than the Jack Dempsey, but breeding pairs can be expected to hold and defend a territory firmly.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in the wild in detail; by genus and family Rocio spinosissima is a biparental open substrate spawner. Following the pattern of its well-studied relative the Jack Dempsey, the female would lay a clutch of adhesive eggs on a cleaned hard surface and both parents share care — the female fanning and tending the eggs, the male guarding the territory, and both guarding the free-swimming fry as a school. Clutch size in so small a fish is likely modest (on the order of one to a few hundred eggs). The species is rarely kept and its captive reproduction is correspondingly little documented, but it would be expected to respond to the standard biparental-cichlid breeding approach.
In the aquarium
Rocio spinosissima is seldom seen in the aquarium trade and is kept, when at all, by Central American cichlid specialists. Its small adult size means modest space requirements — a tank of around 25–40 US gal would suit a pair, with more room for companions. Following its Izabal-basin origins it should be kept warm (about 79–82 °F) in neutral to alkaline, moderately hard water (pH around 7.5–8.0), with good filtration and routine water changes. Aquascaping along Central American lines — a sand or fine-gravel bottom, rock and driftwood structure forming caves and broken sight-lines, hardy plants and a flat spawning stone — suits the species. As a small, pair-forming cichlid it is only moderately aggressive outside breeding but defends a territory when spawning, so tankmates should be of similar size and robustness and may need space or removal during breeding. Feeding is straightforward: quality small cichlid pellets and flake supplemented with frozen and live invertebrate foods. Because it is a threatened single-basin endemic, any aquarium stock is best treated as worth maintaining as a captive line rather than a casual purchase, and wild collection should be approached responsibly.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Rocio spinosissima as Endangered (assessed 19 July 2019), the conservation outlier among an otherwise secure genus. The listing reflects its very restricted range — effectively confined to the Lake Izabal / Río Dulce basin of Guatemala — combined with the mounting pressures on that system. Lake Izabal faces pollution and eutrophication (including from agro-industrial runoff and nickel mining in the basin), habitat alteration, sedimentation, and the spread of introduced species, all of which bear directly on a fish whose entire world distribution lies within the one drainage. A single-basin endemic has no refuge population elsewhere, so basin-scale degradation translates directly into extinction risk. It carries no CITES listing. The species is a clear case where the conservation of the water body — the Izabal–Dulce system — is inseparable from the survival of the fish.
