Thoracochromis buysi was described in 1970 by Michael Penrith, an ichthyologist associated with the State Museum in Windhoek who worked extensively on the fish fauna of Namibia and the Cunene (Kunene) River system, originally in the genus Haplochromis before later placement in Thoracochromis. The genus Thoracochromis combines the Greek thorax, “chest” or “breastplate,” with chromis, a classical fish name, referring to a distinctive pattern of scale coverage on the chest region used as a diagnostic character for the genus, which spans a wide swath of central, eastern and southern African river systems rather than being confined to a single Rift lake. The species epithet buysi is a patronym honouring a collector or colleague surnamed Buys; further biographical detail is not confirmed here.

As in other Thoracochromis, Thoracochromis buysi is expected to show the diagnostic chest-scale pattern that defines the genus, along with a moderately elongate haplochromine body form.
